@ivy30,gokul007,dallo306,cicatrix,I will be in IB,mitscholar.............
is the discussion is all about my earlier post and its comments, i plead everybody to stop the comments and do their own.
hey everybody,Nepal is already a peaceful nation again,,,,,,,,and where r u hanging on!!!!!!!!!
haaaaaaaaaaaaa

@dallo306: I do think that recession will affect the colleges as well....else why are some colleges stating that they are re-reviewing their funding policies?...except for the rich colleges/univs, all the moderate colleges will experience the direct effect of the recession which in turn will affect us(since we r gonna ask them for money)

@cicatrix: how ya doin??...done wid ur stanford essays??

Writing the Essay: Sound Advice from an Expert

Fast Food. That's what I think of when I try to draw an analogy with the process of reading application essays.

The bad. Ninety percent of the applications I read contain what I call McEssays - usually five-paragraph essays that consist primarily of abstractions and unsupported generalization. They are technically correct in that they are organized and have the correct sentence structure and spelling, but they are boring. Sort of like a Big Mac. I have nothing against Big Macs, but the one I eat in Charlottesville is not going to be fundamentally different from the one I eat in Paris, Peoria or Palm Springs. I am not going to rave about the quality of a particular Big Mac. The same can be said about the generic essay. If an essay starts out: "I have been a member of the band and it has taught me leadership, perseverance and hard work," I can almost recite the rest of the essay without reading it. Each of the three middle paragraphs gives a bit of support to an abstraction, and the final paragraph restates what has already been said. A McEssay is not wrong, but it is not going to be a positive factor in the admission decision. It will not allow a student to stand out.

A student who uses vague abstractions poured into a preset form will end up being interpreted as a vague series of abstractions. A student who uses clich

hey earlier I had posted the link, but seems nobody seemed to b interested...so I m posting the whole thing since I found it to be very much useful.

I you find it long, just skip it!!

@neo-n........e,
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I had read that article through the link.......So, not just interested..passionate!!!

Has anyone totally completed his ED application yet?I mean everything frm essays to the letter of rec. being posted.

Hey any idea for doing good in sat passage

@hiroshima
take time to read...dun jus hurry thru the text as they say you should...bt dun take more dan 3 minutes..a lil time spent understanding d passage will save u a lot of confusion in d questions..it definitely makes a difference..

and do the questions before the passage quickly.this l buy u more time for the passages.

it helped me score more...might help you too
tel me if it helped.

ne more suggestions neone??
i still need to improve my critical reading.....

could some1 please answer this. If one is applying to college under Single choice early action, does one need to send the ED agreement?

one more question, if we are applying online, what r the documents that go online and wht r the ones that need to be sent via mail. I know, but just want to make sure. cross check. Thank in advance

^ I m not quite sure wht the last ques. was but hope this helps.
SCEA is a non-binding agreement whereas ED is a binding agreement.In SCEA if u get accepted with the desired fin. aid then u r not forced to attend tht college.u could wait for decisions frm other colleges and then make ur decision.but in ED once u get accepted and r financially able to attend the college then u r bound by the agreement to attend the college. u cannot wait for decisions frm other colleges and will have to withdraw ur applications frm all other colleges.

thnx ivy 30,
BUt what if it is restrictive EA, still dont need to send the ED agreement of the common app??

@ILTI
if it is restrictive, when u choose an ED/EA, the common app. will notify you

@neo-nietzsche: thanx 4 u post-essay tips particularly,,,,,,,,

@hiroshima-u just have to be very patient in doing CR in SAt -coz when u skip the facts and leave any options un-analyzed,u wud feel either all the options are wright or all the options are wrong-and always skim fast through the passages and choices a,b,c,d,e too.the next thing is if u have strong command on vocabs ,u cud save time for passage based questions( i had read from majortests.com and barrons flash cards).finally,what i did is left three questions in CR portion where i didn't understand the question at all-the most important is read the passages fast-and yet one left"be familiar with the tone,nature of the passage and narrators-there are few words for this.

@rmaharjan-i am eager to know ur SAT scores-what was the score and what's ur ED choice..........

and guys i am having technical ............................"errors " while submitting common app form online---everytime as i submit the form,it stops .........i dont know why.........anybody has faced it or its only me.........please help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and anybody knows " when we filled out the form ISFAA---which form will US embassy get it back while issuing visa for us-its only the certification of finances or both the forms,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,------i think class of 2012 cud help this........

@mitscholar
i believe all the details will be listed on the I20..
i am having troubles submitting common app too..
a senior suggested me to try again a little later..
@everyone
thts one lesson we sud learn... keeping applications till the last minute is very risky

Q1:"If you are given a block of stone, hammer and a chisel, what would you carve and why?"...Q2:"Along the edge of ancient maps it used to say 'Here there be monsters.' What does it say at the edge of your map and why does it say that?"

these are what kenyon has asked me to write on (two of the essay topics..I have to write 3 supp essays n 1 comm app in total)......
just wanted you all to have a look at these questions and make you all feel happy about not being required to answer those!!!!

@neo, hahaha thats so vague...sounds like one of those U chicago essays. So glad i am not the one wrestling(!!!) with those topics! How many have u finished out of 4 ?

@ neo---n i thought writing essays for stanford in hard...hahha...atleast we dont have such abstract topics...the carving one sounds interesting..i wonder what u'll come up with for the map one.....m available for essay editing if u want....wud luv to know how u dealt with it...

@INTL...are u eyeing for Stanford too..

@wheatstone1...stanford right??m so stuck with the supplements...i wrote some essay but i din know there was a word limit ...m having a hard time cutting things short.....how r u doing with the essays??

@ppl worried abt the financial apps....
i applied last year to a few colleges....if u get accepted they will send u the I-20...the ISFAA or the COF will NOT be handed to the Embassy neither ne of the financial documents you send to college...
the I-20 will show how much your are expected to pay per year and where u will u pay them frm only....like if u show in ur ISFAA that u'll pay 10k from your bank balance/savings it will be written so in your I-20....then when u apply for VISA u will have to show ur balance certificate....make sure it is greater than the expected amount of parental contribution for four years.....like in the abv example bank balnc=>10*4=40K...

this is what i think from what i have heard....i dint apply for Visa last year bt got the above info from my seniors...

it wud b gr8 if sum1 from class of 2012 could verify this info coz m nt 100%sure

@cicatrix , yeah that is how it exactly works.
