Exile3418, how did you find out?

narrowing NJ

I’m still waiting on CA, MA & DC for now…

Please use this template that explains the symbols below for each state

See the stickied FAQ thread in this forum for links to lists of previous scores.

After the press-release date in mid-September, qualifying scores will be available by phone from the NMSC. Here is the number to call–the receptionist will give you one “qualifying score” when asked.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation
1560 Sherman Avenue
Suite 200
Evanston, Illinois 60201-4897
Main Telephone: (847) 866-5100
Main Fax: (847) 866-5113

You can feel free to edit the list yourself. Or simply post your information and rely on others to edit it in.

If you have been notified that you are NMSF, post your score (and your state) if it is lower than the score already posted for your state. It will then become the lowest known qualifying score and be indicated as “<=”.

If you have reliable knowledge of what the qualifying score for your state is (try asking whoever notifies you!), post it here, too. It will become the definitive cut-off score for your state indicated by “=”.

Finally, if you know that you did not qualify and had a reasonably high score, it can also be useful to post your score as an example of the highest non-qualifying score. This can be indicated by “>=”

Please note: Be conscientious as you post scores on this thread–it would be crushing to be led to believe you have made the cutoff by a post but actually haven’t. But everyone should be tolerant of mistakes, too. This is an unofficial source of information derived from a collaborative process and is not, therefore, guaranteed.

Outstanding participants(National)<=186 (per lowest NASF Cutoff so far)

Thank you Altalomadad. I hope you’re right. My daughter’s score is 227, which means she made it!

I got scolded for asking our GC about the scores! I was told that they just arrived on Friday and she would get to it this week!

They should be a little nicer. They don’t realize what this means to our families. Besides, don’t they work for us?

My guidance counselor informed me on September 6th. I think the list of semifinalists has been sent to schools, but not publicized yet.

Agreed, altalomadad, but I’m sure they think we all have OCD!

Does anyone know details about how NMC makes the information available publicly? I would appreciate any information about how we might find out if a student is on the NMSF list. Thanks!

Ohmmom, if your child is not home-schooled, I think you just have to wait for the school. However, there are schools out there that do to often have finalists and do not know what to do. If I knew my kid qualified, which I did thanks to CC, I would call the school.

Rockfish’s 1102 post gives you the number to call after September 15 if you have not heard by then.

You can contact NMSC on Sep. 11th to find out if your child made NMSF. On Sep. 11th, NMSC will have press release.

If you go to a regular school or homeschooled, all you need is the cutoff. You can call and ask for the cutoff on 11th. In the past, people on CC have called NMSC to get a cutoff for the State to fill in any missing blanks or not completely confirmed scores.

They tend to give out only one State to a person.

The real problem when schools sit on this paperwork is that the next step is DUE on October 9th. This includes school recommendation, student essay, transcript etc.

http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf

Every year we hear about some school messing it up. So it is upto parents/students to make sure they understand this process and meet the required deadlines.

Thank you Texaspg for the link.

Checking in from Maryland . . . My son’s GC sent me an e-mail this morning saying he was a semi-finalist with a score of 223. I asked her if she knew the cut-off score for MD but she hadn’t had a chance to fully look over the info yet and didn’t know.

She said the letter was in her mailbox at school this morning, but must have been at school last week as it had been opened by the office.

Hope this helps!

^ Congrats to you and your son! This is good news for some who have been fretting in MD as the person who wrote post #992 claiming to see the “booklet” had posted MD at 224, but cancelled that post for some reason. I’m curious to see if he/she is correct on CA, MA, & DC in the post that remains published in this thread.

The numbers collected so far seem to match up with those shown in this press-release (just made available in last 24 hours).

FairTest Press Release: National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Scores Vary Greatly State-By State | FairTest

Those folks don’t like the skew by state, but their info seems good.

Wonder where they got the list.

Wow, that list sure jibes with our’s… Nothing in dispute… Looks like good info…thanks for linking @mjcc01!

After comparing the cutoff scores listed in the Fair Test link above, every single bold number in the running list that has been compiled by users on this forum matches EXACTLY. It appears that the Fair Test list may have the actual numbers.

So, this is a very interesting press release. Do you mind sharing how you came across it, @mjcc01?

I will update in a couple of hours…
