Actually I’m a girl :P

I got a B, but the most difficult questions on my paper were the easiest ones on the higher paper, so a lot of the stuff I’m learning for the SAT isn’t so much revising as literally learning for the first time. Triangles I can do. Percentages maybe. Fractions, inverse proportion and algebra? ■■■■.

My maths teacher kept saying that I wasn’t allowed to do the intermediate one, that everyone at the school should do higher. That was until I scored 12% on the mock paper. HA!

I did a practice paper and scored around… 500? I’m aiming to get over 2000 on the SAT nods

My bad. I guessed that the chances of there being another girl on the thread were fairly unlikely. Personally, I can’t remember the number of times people have called me “dude” on this forum, lol :).

For the SAT, I recommend getting the Blue Book (the Official Study Guide) and looking at the outline of what the Math section entails. Then try learning that material from an A-level book or something. Also, get a graphical calculator if you can afford it - I hear that helps a lot. And see if you can get the Official SAT Question of the Day (from the College Board site) sent to your email :).

Thanks for the advice. I’m completely broke right now so I can’t afford the blue book, I’m using a GCSE study guide though and it seems to have all the same stuff as the SAT.

I thought you were a guy too! I don’t know why. But now I feel differently about you because you’re a girl. Weird how that happens.

The Official Question of the Day is free, you just need to have a CollegeBoard account (which is also free) if you want it sent to your email inbox; you can collect a huge number of questions to work through (which I’m doing right now. I reached 100 questions yesterday, lol :D). Or you can just go to the site every day. Try googling “sat math”; you should find links to quite a few good websites.

Also, I think it’s my username. “python” doesn’t sound too feminine, lol, and when people hear that I’m better at Maths and Physics than I ever will be at humanities, they automatically assume I’m a guy. Hence the “wassup dude?” posts. Lol.

Yeah that’s true. Maybe that’s why you thought I was a guy as well. Pythons and ninjas… girl power!

I don’t mind people assuming I’m a guy that much, unless they start talking like they did in this thread here:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/international-students/649771-what-your-country-famous-10.html

with many a ;). Then I often get annoyed.

I’m imagining a picture right now of some geek sitting at a computer, captioned “THE INTERNET: Because first impressions aren’t everything.” :)

What, you mean you’re not interested that your British accent will attract the American girls??! Haha.

For the record, I <3 American accents. Well, maybe that’s not it. I <3 American boys.

That was quite a good thread anyway, though; I need to brush up on my Geography, and I got to hear about some really out-of-the-way (I think) places like Panama and stuff. Out of curiosity, does Geography count as one of the humanities?

Hmm I’m not sure. I’d have guessed it would be more of a science, like Earth science or something.

Are you doing A Levels at the moment?

No, but I’ve never been taught by anyone outside my family before. And MIT requires a recommendation from a humanities teacher - so I thought I could work towards that while learning Geography at the same time. I gave it a check, and it’s definitely not a humanities subject, though. Oh well :/.

Back on topic, though - isn’t it nice to have so many great colleges we can choose to apply to? It’s great for motivational purposes - you can always find something you love about pretty much any college, which keeps you going. Once I get a bit disillusioned about one college, I think about a different one. I’ve been obsessed with Harvard, Cornell, and Williams so far, lol :).

Definitely! But I’ve taken to going straight to the financial aid page first because there’s been a few times I’ve loved a school and then discovered there’s no way I’ll get funding to go there.

My main obsession for a long time was Princeton until I really thought about what I wanted to study, then from the academics I learned about Yale and then found that I also love EVERYTHING about Yale. So that’s my top top top choice.

But really… there’s such a small difference between my top and last choice that I’d be so happy to go to any of them.

So what kind of stage are you at with regards to a regular school system? You’re… 18?

I wouldn’t worry too much about the recommendations thing. Maybe if you explain to them your situation you might be able to use a geography one. I’m only giving one recommendation from school and the common application requires two. I also have NO idea what to do about a high school transcript as we don’t have those here. So confusing!

i think u shouldn’t be worrying about that high school transcript thing. once upon the request to your academic coordinator u can get that. Its just a record of your high school grades and you should easily get that.

Oh FWIW, I’m a girl too :D

you guyz are fast…
all the best!!

Thanks dallo306!
You’re Nepali, I suppose?
How have your decisions been coming along?

I’ve been on this site since the start of my 10th grade. In the process, I’ve accumulated a ton of posts and a LOOOOOOOOT of knowledge on the admissions process :).

@tetrisfan
Wow!
Thts awesome…
So u’ll b going to college next year is it?

And by the way, how many posts does it take to become a senior member?

Well, my mum was one of the more unconventional homeschoolers. She didn’t always teach me according to a curriculum; it was more a case of what happened to be around. With my A-levels, I learnt some maths fairly early, and my older siblings (who were in university) realized that I was good enough to take them. So I entered for P1 and P2, ended up doing pretty well, and just continued, really.

For the last few years, I’ve been working indepedendently. I’d be in junior year, I suppose, if I were in high school, seeing as I’m applying to college this autumn. Still, like I said, it’s very approximate :); since I never worked to a set curriculum, I can’t really go by age. I know Maths, Physics and Programming fairly well, but I’ve no idea when it comes to things like Biology and Chemistry… I’m actually doing my SAT Subject Tests in them later this year, so if I get a 500, I’ll know I need to learn a bit more :D.

With regards to the whole high school transcript thing… I too have no idea how to go about it. I actually asked about that on the Homeschooling forum. Maybe you could ask your school teacher.

@dallo306: Gratz! Columbia is a great school. I think Obama went there :). And you live in Nepal? Maybe we are distantly related… my mum is Malay and my dad Pakistani, but everyone thinks my brother is from Nepal, as in: random strangers will go up to him and say, “Are you Nepalese?” You’re lucky to live near the mountains, lol. There aren’t many here in England… save for Snowdonia, or Ben Nevis.

@tetrisfan: Heh… that’s a long while. I only signed up a couple of weeks ago, but boy, is this site addicting. :P
