Hey magneticpoet. How do you feel about K in general? Positives and Negatives?

In general, I love it. The only negatives I can really think of at the moment are winter quarter weather and … 5th week. Right around 5th week you realize your seemingly ideal combination of academics, extracurriculars, and social life isn’t actually as perfect as you thought as things start to build up.

Oh, and the ridiculously limited cafeteria hours.

But if you can put up with those things you get amazing professors, amazing classes, and an interesting mix of people - almost all of whom are incredibly nice, and you’re bound to find a group of friends in there. LandSea certainly helps - most of my friends were in my roommate’s patrol, and I just kind of tagged along with them at the beginning of the year. But I myself didn’t actually do it and turned out just fine. :)

That’s good to hear

But yeah, the weather is what scares me the most. Its a struggle for me to get through a cold weather here in the DC area. I do not know how I would survive a winter in Michigan.

And how limited are these cafeteria hours? This has come up in several of the previous posts as well.

On Saturdays and Sundays the cafeteria closes at 6pm. The rest of the week it is 7pm. My S has almost always had classes that start in the late morning and he works late at night. Later dinner hours would be so much better.

Wow, those are actually very limited. Is there anywhere else to eat on campus that is open later? And has anyone told the administration that they feel the hours should be lengthened? It seems like something that the students could get enough pressure on to be able to lengthen the hours at least a little bit.

I would like to commend Kalamazoo admissions for knowing how to treat nervous applicants. I have an autism spectrum disorder, and I sent K an e-mail inquiry about how that would affect admissions decisions. In return I got a 45-minute phone call from an enthusiastic, caring ancomm. It was a real treat.

amh33-there is a smaller cafe that is open until midnight and a few places are within easy walking distance.

The students do complain about it.

I’m from the Chicagoland area and used to bitter windchill - thus far winter has been comparatively mild. More snow, but definitely warmer. I’m not sure how that compares to DC though. Invest in snowboots if you decide to come to the Midwest (not just K)!

And we complain plenty about the caf hours. It’s super ironic because we have this dining brochoure that touts the caf’s flexibility. :/

Funny, my son is looking for a cool climate (we live in TX). But I still have to convince him that shorts in Kzoo in the winter are not really keep you warm.

I think kids have abilities us oldsters lose, fschendstok. My wife and I were going to a basketball game the other day in Milwaukee (across the lake from Kalamazoo). It was about 24, snow and ice on the ground. And yet a number of kids we saw were wearing light sweatshirts or even shorts while I was clenching my parka around me. But I distinctly remember how as a kid in this climate I went through entire winters wearing waist length jackets and tennis shoes, much to the consternation of my mother.

Anyway, Kalamazoo is fairly cold and pretty snowy most winters, but the kids don’t seem to mind. My son is a junior there now and loves it.

i just got accepted too!!! btw im form jamaica !!

My son accepted at Kalamazoo, very interested in study abroad programs.

Congrats to all those accepted. My S is a sophomore this year and preparing for study abroad in the fall. These past two years have been a wonderful experience.

I received an email informing my acceptance by Kzoo yesterday! And I received the mail today.

Is there any one who’s interested in the LANDSEA?

I received an email ytd too. and still waiting for my mail with the FA package info.

Im quite set on going to Kzoo. and im so excited bout it.

You guys think we should start a Kalamazoo Class of 2014 FB Group?? :)

one has already been created but its not used much, from what i can see, so we could all join that 1 or create a new 1

i’m interested in LandSea, sounds like it would be an exciting way to start off college

thanks ramonroch, i just found it on fb. im interested in Landsea too, really excited for it.

Though i must say im still waiting for my Acceptance envelope to arrive (im international), and have to take a look at the financial aid package kzoo gave me. Hopefully it ll all turn out well and i ll see u in kzoo in fall this year!

btw, u guys can join the fb group for Kzoo class 2014. Just Search Kalamazoo College Class of 2014.

:o Can’t believe I didn’t see their email! I finally learned of my acceptance when I got the big (can’t really say fat, because it wasn’t very fat) envelope!

The email talks of a personal touch and surprise, I got it! :)

Really happy. Wasn’t my top choice, but as an international requiring lot of aid, I can’t expect to be accepted everywhere, can I? I’m still really happy, though. A little bit of research over the last couple of days shows K fits me better than I initially thought.

EDIT: TO INTERNATIONALS: Did any of you get the kind of aid you hoped for?

Congratulations to all who were accepted and are planning to attend Kalamazoo. My D was accepted too in March and K was her first choice BUT Allegheny College in PA offered a far better financial package so now she’s reconsidering (she’s very practical). We visited K last summer; it is beautiful, sounds like a great school, and LANDSEA sounds great–but more $$! Both schools are in Loren Pope’s book, that’s how we learned of them.
