To those considering LandSea-

I’m not sure if this is still the case, but when my S went on LandSea in 2008, he received a very nice need based scholarship to help pay a large portion of the cost. So, if you qualify for need based aid from K and you want to go on LandSea, don’t rule it out because of the cost! He didn’t even have to do anything extra, it was simply based on who was eligible.

I recently filled out the housing form and was wondering, when do we find out who our roommates are? Is it in like June or more like August because I don’t want to buy anything until I know what my roommate likes. Any help on this subject would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi, I;m an Indian student accepted to Kalamazoo. Any other Indian accepted? Anybody interested in doing Computer Science?

@ugwedteu - I have got decent aid, bot my full requirement though. I’m trying to work out the finances now. Where are you from and what do you intend studying

hi rothik09, im an international too from malaysia. Pretty set on going to kzoo this fall, and i receive a rather generous amount of FA from kzoo, though still the prospect of going to US for college definitely stretches my family financially. They gave me 33k per annum worth of aid, and prob have to top up a total of 14-15k per year.

where r u from? Do join the kalamazoo college class of 2014 group on facebook if u have one. :)

@sixfoottall
Hi, I’m from India. Plan to study Computer Science. How about you? I have not yet joined the fb class of 2014 group, will do so.
People self and sixfoottall come from relativley warm climate. How cold does it get at Zoo and how does one manage.

Hi Sixfoottall, are you still going to K this fall of 2010? I’m from Malaysia (American now) and my daughter’s going to be a freshman at K this fall. We’re all excited about it. We want her to do LandSea, and it’s great to know that we may be able to get financial aid for it. Hope you make it.

Coming from India you’re going to find Kalamazoo pretty cold but you can equip yourself. I recommend you buy your winter gear here in the U.S. You should have a couple of knit hats (wool with cotton lining); a pair of waterproof gloves or mittens for playing in the snow and a pair of really warm Goretex-type gloves; good, heavy water-proof boots (leather is expensive but looks good) and a down jacket for sure. From mid-November on it could be in the 40s-50s during the day (Farenheit, sorry!), dropping rapidly into the 30s by December or colder.

Thanks newbie2. This was a big help. Where can one buy these things in Kalamazoo and how much would these cost approx. Are snow boots a must? I was told that snow boots may not be required since one does not spend too much time outdoors during winters.

Rohitk09, you can buy these items in a good sporting goods store, like REI or Dick’s Sporting Goods or even Sports Authority but you’ll have to be in a major metropolitan area like Chicago to find them. Where will you land when you fly into the U.S.? You can also get good quality products on-line through L.L.Bean, Eddie Bauer, Lands End. WHen I say “snow boots” I just meant sturdy shoes that will keep your feet warm and dry. You may not be playing out in the cold a lot but you’ll be walking all over campus and winters in Kalamazoo can be pretty snowy. Sidewalks will be cleared but paths may be icy or snowy and slushy. I live in the Chicago area – Michigan residents, am I far off the mark here?

newbie2, I (and I presume rohit also) will be landing directly in Kalamazoo City (it’s got its own international airport )

Could you also give a rough estimate of how much it will cost? Just to compare, because we have summer discounts in shops that sell winter clothing for people heading westwards.

I’m from Michigan, not far from Kalamazoo. The weather was about right, for instance last January we spent less than twelve hours above freezing so it is pretty cold. I would say it is essential to layer, the classrooms are warm but outside is cold so being able to adjust quickly is a good idea. Also wet feet suck so boots and socks are a must.

Thanks newbie2 and rubystone for all the advice. Would you say it is best we reach Kalamazoo, in mid Sep, and then buy the warm stuff - jacket, boots, gloves, caps etc, from kalamazoo itself. Or would it be cheaper to buy stuff from New York where I’m going to spend a few days before coming to Kalamazoo. But then it’ll add to the vol and wt I can carry from NYC. When does the real requirement come up. What do you advise.

I would wait until you got to Kalamazoo. During freshman orientation there are opportunities to go to some bigger stores. It would be easier and cheaper to buy gear then. You will need a coat, a hat and gloves. Some people like scarves. Prices vary so much. You can buy things like these at Target or Meijer for a cheaper price (coats as low as maybe $40, hats/gloves/scarves around $10) or there are sporting goods stores where you can buy Patagonia or North Face brands.

For what it’s worth, my S is a sophomore and has never owned boots (except for the ones for LandSea) and we we live only about an hour from Kalamazoo. He wears just regular shoes and lots of students wear athletic shoes in the winter. It is nice to have waterproof boots, but not totally necessary. As long as you have some good sturdy shoes that cover your feet and have a durable sole on the bottom, you will be fine.

Thanks bbkitty. Remaining healthy and comfortable is top priority - only then will other things follow smoothly. Will take your advice. Also I feel these things won’t really be required before Nov/ Dec, so there would be time.

Has everyone filled their housing forms as yet? What’s next?

Also, I’m curious to know. How many of you received any sales pitch or personal emails, etc? (Like what’s mentioned here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/916785-wooing-admitted-students-enroll-personal-touch-sales-pitch.html) I just got my acceptance letter and a copy of LuxEsto. Like I said on that thread, K was my only real option and I think it’s a good fit, so I didn’t need any wooing.

Internationals, did anyone notice that the total in the resource verification form doesn’t tally?

I filled out my housing form already. I got the link to it after I paid my deposit.

I did get a personal phone call from a professor from the department I’m interested in. I thought this was a very personal touch. He really talked about the specific department program but didn’t try to “sell” me on the college in particular. I’ve been very impressed with how K makes you feel included but isn’t pushy like another school I applied to.

Newbie2: Hi its really great to hear from someone comin from similar roots over here. I live in Sabah. I will be in kzoo this fall, and very excited about it as well. You should ask your daughter to join the Kalamazoo College Class of 2014 facebook group if she hasn’t, it ll be amazing to meet up with some future classmates prior to being at kzoo.

Rohit, Ruby and Ugwedteu! Hope to see all of you on the fb group too, drop by to say hi if you’re there, im andrew!
