Class of 2015: College Lists

I feel late but I felt like I could post my current list! I’m from Missouri and want to major in Engineering! I seem to really want to go to school in Texas.

Order of Preference(I think…)

1.Rice University(Top Choice)*
2.Northwestern University*
3.Iowa State University*
4.University Of Texas Austin*
5.Boston University*
6.Illinois Institute of Technology*
7.University of Texas Dallas
8.University of Texas Arlington*
9.Drexel University
10.University of Houston*

May apply
1.Carnegie Mellon
2.TAMU

I really only wanna apply to 7-8.The ones I have stars next to I know I’m applying to for sure.Lots of decisions!! Good Luck everyone I’m seeing some great lists out there!:)

Finally narrowed this thing down. In order of preference

1) Harvard
2) Yale
3) Stanford
4) Princeton
5) Brown
6) Penn
7) UVA
8) Duke
9) Northern VA Community College

Only really want to go to the first 5 though

@afroninja26 I’m hoping you have extraordinary stats and a hook… Eight of the nine are near lotteries

@Phillyy15‌ @afroninja26‌

No offense, but your list is really poorly balanced. Considering CCs don’t really need an application (You just go there and fill out some paperwork, but it really takes less than a week and can be done anytime), you have only schools with 25% admit rates and below. In such a case, you run huge risks. If you aren’t instate to UVA, you face a low admit rate and nearly no financial aid. All of your other schools are USNWR Top 20 schools, and with that, you really would just have to hope for a chance.

What major are you interested in? For example, with Computer Science, a great match or safety would be Case Western, RPI, WPI, etc.

@afroninja26, why not our wonderful state schools like Virginia Tech and UVA?

@AnImpAffliction‌
UVA is on his list, and based on the other placeholders of such a list, I’d say he isn’t interested in Virginia Tech

@Apollo11, yeah I noticed that UVA was on his list after I posted the comment.

Updated List (although this could change anytime):

 1. Virginia Tech
 2. UVA
 3. GMU
 4. Rutgers
 5. UMD - College Park
 6. Penn State
 7. UPenn (??) - Still trying to decide if it’s worth applying to an Ivy.
 8. Johns Hopkins

@AnImpAffliction‌

Do want to get into medicine? (I’m assuming based on that list)

@Apollo11, nope, Computer Science.

@AnImpAffliction‌
Ha! It’s funny you should say that; like every one of those colleges are really good for pre-med. Anyway, if you like CS, have you thought about Harvey Mudd or Case Western?

@Apollo11, hahaha true, but I’m sure they have good CS programs too. And those schools are both too far and too expensive. My parents would NEVER let me go to college in California. :O

@AnImpAffliction‌

Oh, sorry about that. Case Western is pretty affordable however. They give lots of financial aid and merit aid are situated in Columbus, Ohio, if I recall correctly.

What about RPI or WPI?

@Apollo11, I’ll look more into Case Western. Ohio shouldn’t be too bad. Daaaang, all these are private schools. I will look into them, but I think I wanna look into more public schools closer to home. Thanks for the suggestions though!

why is johns hopkins on a CS list?

@AnImpAffliction‌
RPI and WPI are pretty good with merit aid though. Also, you might want to check out a financial aid calculator. Most college websites have one and they’ll tell you the true cost of attending the school. You’d be surprised at what you’ll find out; Harvard is cheaper for me than my state school

@foolish, because it has a CS program?
@apollo11, I should do that at some point. I haven’t had a conversation with my parents about paying for school. Wow, Harvard is cheaper??

@AnImpAffliction‌
By about 5k a year. Financial Aid Calculators are also available on College Board’s site. Add that in with my APs and DE credit, I’d be saving a lot at Harvard.

@Apollo11‌ instate for UVA, and I did not take any offense. My prospective major is poli sci, and I want to go into management consulting, which is why my list is so unbalanced. They only recruit from Ivies+Stanford+big state schools. These schools are really the only ones where I can do consulting at top firms, and I even narrowed it down a bit. I am considering safeties though, I just don’t know any for sure so I didn’t put them on. And I know they’re all hard schools, but I only need to get into one

@afroninja‌
As someone who knows a lot about management consulting and the recruiting process, I totally understand, and as such, I’d recommend the following as safeties and/or matches where you could still break into BCG/McKinsey/etc.

USC

GWU

Georgetown

NYU

Cornell (BTW, Brown isn’t really good for Management Consulting, and you’ll want to do Dyson AEM at Cornell for Management Consulting)

Emory

Also, have you thought about investment banking?

BTW, PM me if you have any questions. I know a lot on the topic
