@diglass No, we live about an hour train ride outside of NYC. So we will just be getting up really early to be on a 7:20 am train Can’t wait to hear everyone’s updates from their audition weekend!
@diglass Not great. She was cut before the solos. She was really upset at first, but she’s not a wallower. She moved on by the next day:)
@diglass @nowmomto3 and others. Here is the overview of Fordham/Ailey and Tisch.
Fordham/Ailey- to answer a question - the interview is at AIley and it is 2-3 minutes only after the solos. There are no cuts during the day so all do solos. The day started there with a parent/dancer meeting where Ailey:the man and the company was presented on video. THen a ballet and modern class. While that was happening, parents could take a tour with a current student. Although we had already done that months before, i took the opportunity to ask the student many questions while I re-took the tour. Then the kids had lunch- 30-45 min.- parents can buy it before lunch and leave it at the desk. Solos in the afternoon, with , as I said , a short few questions for each after the solo . I know there were those flying out that night who were surprised it ran that late…maybe 5:30? There were 30-40 dancers.
NYU/Tisch- about 40 dancers. Started with warm up then ballet class of about an hour, then modern of about a 1/2 hour which my daughter said was more like a current class she takes at her studio which they call “contemporary”. It wasn’t pure Graham/Horton, anyway. They really tried to put the kids at ease…could hear laughter periodically. They told parents when to come back. Cuts were made by announcing to dancers the numbers of those who were dismissed. It was about 30 of the 40, so 10 stayed for solos. They graciously asked if anyone was making a flight they would put them first. (BTW- I heard the previous Tisch audition, only 4 stayed for solos! )The dancers were split in 2 rooms for solos so they each got to see 4 others. After solo they went to a private area for interview- which was just 3 or 4 questions. My daughter, who did her solo, said solos were a variety of dance genres. We were out by 3:30 I think. Very civilized.
@nowmomto3- we are also an hour from NYC, in Westchester. Where are you?
@penandladle We are in Bucks County PA, right over the bridge from NJ
@diglass and @penandladle How did everything go at Purchase? Can’t wait to hear your details and thoughts. My D went to Pace on Saturday. It went by really quick! It was a hectic morning bc we were taking the train into NYC and there was an issue on the train so we were late getting in. Thankfully we made it in time! The audition consisted of a ballet class, then they had jazz, then hip hop and then tap. My D said she felt good with how the audition went. Then they had a Q & A session. My D and I both enjoyed that. Rhonda Miller, Scott Jovovich and Lauren Gaul answered questions. MY D got a good vibe from them and really liked the program.
This was her last audition. Now it’s a matter of waiting to hear from Pace for talent. Ironically she received her academic acceptance on Friday. She’s been fortunate to have many choices but I have no idea where she will choose. She just can’t decide. I think she would be happy at several of her options.
@nowmomto3 Happy to hear that your D enjoyed her Pace audition! Thank you for the summary of your day. It sounds like an interesting program.
We had an exhausting weekend with 2 auditions in two days! First was Purchase. The audition started with a ballet class followed by a modern class. My D liked their modern. There was a parent info session during this time. It sounds like a promising program. My D was disappointed to learn that they don’t teach any jazz classes. (Maybe this is something we should have known going in but we did not) My D was cut before the solo’s. She found this confusing, she said they cut a lot of very talented girls. There were about 75 students there. They were split into 2 groups. about half of my D group did solos. Ultimately we knew without question this was not the right place for my D. She did not like the campus or the limited curriculum. I highly recommend renting a car for anyone who is traveling by plane or train. My D and I are quite adept at navigating train/bus transport, but everything including calling a cab was difficult from campus! We were grateful to leave. On the positive side my D saw several friends from past SI’s!
We rented a car and drove to Boston that evening and had fun laughing about our transport mishaps at Purchase.
Next was Boston Conservatory. This was a much smaller audition as I believe they set limits on capacity. There were 27 students at this audition. They also had a ballet and modern class before a break. My D liked both classes. Followed by solos and interviews. They did solos by last name. You could easily be here until 6pm. There were no cuts done here. My D said there was quite a wide range of ability here. The director gave a very informative parent info session. There were also tours available throughout the day. This program offers a variety of classes and they hope to add Hip Hop soon.
My D thought her audition went well and we both really liked the program.
They send out letters in April so the waiting begins!
Thankfully we were able to fly home yesterday before the snow got too bad! Now to rest and prep for the next set of auditions!
@nowmomto3 congratulations on a good Pace audition for your DD. Mine thought Purchase a rigorous program, very technique oriented ballet class then modern.Traditional/old school teachers in the audition. She was one of 38 of 76 total asked to stay for solo, which she thought went well. interview question was why their program would be right for her.
@penandladle Do you remember what time the Ailey audition started? Our email from Dec says my D’s audition starts at 1pm and that we should be done by 6pm. I may call to confirm, but this seems like a late start time.
10 am but it was a weekday in ny . Maybe different if yours is on a weekend or in another city?
thank you!
@diglass My D is auditioning on Friday as well. We were planning on 1:00. If you hear otherwise, would you mind posting?
TY
First of all, your kids are amazing for doing all these stressful and rigorous auditions!! I’ve been following this thread and am so impressed at how much you all travel and put into this process. And I thought competition dance was tough!!
When your dancers do solos as part of the audition process, do they wear a costume? D has an audition next week and isn’t sure whether to bring her costume. I may have noted in previous posts that the audition is for an arts achievement scholarship but she won’t be majoring in dance so it’s not for admission into a dance program (but she does plan to minor in Dance). She’ll be auditioning with dance majors who are trying for a full scholarship as well as others trying for the creative arts scholarship.
@jmek15 She will just wear her leo and tights that she wore for her audition No changing needed!!
@diglass One of my D best friends from her studio is at BoCo and absolutely loves it! Ironically Purchase wasn’t the right fit for her either.
@nowmomto3 At one point I wanted to choose between Purchase and BoCo and only attend one audition. I couldn’t decide which one to drop. Now I wish we had been able to stay in Boston for one more day. But I suppose it is all part of the process. We know what D does not want in a school.
@jmek15 Thank you! Yes this is a tough adventure. I’m amazed by my D as she goes into each audition. Last week was tough!
@penandladle Going back on the conversation about NYU tisch, in what city did your daughter audition? My daughters’s audition took place in San Francisco and there were about 16 soloists left after the cuts, including my daughter. Its her dream school, and we were curious about how many applicants are left after every cut. Is there a certain number depending on the city, or do they cut whoever they don’t like?
@onpointe33 she auditioned in New York. I would assume they cut however many they do not think are right for the program. At One audition in ny this year 10 remained after cut, another audition in NY, 4 remained. Good luck to your DD
S accepted at James Madison for Dance with scholarship; waitlisted at U Michigan Dance.
