got a 223… Would this be able to qua;ify me for the semifinalist award/NMSF cutoff for NJ.any forecast for the NMSF cutoff for year 2015?

I unfortunately have only scored a 211 on the PSAT.
What are my chances for making National Merit Status?

none /p2ssssss

Folks --as far as chances, look at the first page of the thread, which lists scores by state since 1999. You can see for yourself the range of scores and the trend for your state. Alas, shreyas67, you are in for a long wait - your score is not high enough to be in the safety zone, but it is higher than last year’s qualifying score for TN and is within the historical range. Nobody can give you more information than that. Good luck!

Wish I’d found this site prior to the frantic number crunching I’ve been doing since I got my son’s scores last week. GREAT info here, thanks to all who have contributed. I’m especially excited about PeaceofMind02’s thoughts about the overall mean going down. Last year was pretty much the highest cuts for many states, and short of heading through the roof, I would think they almost had to go back down a bit.

I’m cautiously optimistic about a 220 in PA, though I know a +4 jump from last year’s 217 is possible. Hoping the long term average scores hold true. Any confidence comments on a 220 in PA, given our historical range from 213-217?

PAMom21, relax. You’re good. It’s not likely that 2 years in a row there would be huge jumps in scores, especially to so many pts above previous high cut score. Unless there is something very unusual going on in your state. Like if the state bd of ed has decided to focus on PSAT, make it free for everyone in the state on a school day so that number of kids taking the test this year jumped dramatically, or something of that nature. Otherwise you are fine.

Thank you celesteroberts, your thoughts are GREATLY appreciated. I just spent the last hour reading most of the 2014 thread on this subject. It was heart breaking to read about high hopes back in December, that were downgraded in February when state reports come out, and cemented in September with the year of considerable increases almost across the board.

For those new to this, I do recommend skimming that thread. It has TONS of good info, and I have a much better feel for the whole process now. We should all have more insight come February, when the individual state reports come out, showing if our specific states have an increase or decrease in high scores.

What a roller coaster this can be!

If I got a 215 in Ohio, what do u think my chances are? In the past, the cutoff for ohio has been quite low (211) but last year it was 215.

Got a 223 in California. Might be in danger…

214 Texas… don’t think I got it
went from a 167 last year

Good jump. Concentrate on SATs because they also get you reasonably good scholarships.

think a 215 will be ok for AZ? I know the cutoff has never quite been 215 but…

Chances for a 214 cutoff in IL?

Purplechimp: We are in AZ also. Congratulations on your score. You’ll probably be fine but no guarantees. Post #64 says it best.

214 in NH? Class of 2014 was 214, but class of 2013 was 211. This is going to be a close one, that would suck if it raised to 215.

Congrats, Slushy121 - that’s a great score! You are in good company here! Many of us will be waiting anxiously hoping that the cutoffs don’t rise!

Is a 212 in washington hoping for too much? The historical trend seems to be between 216 and 220 so I’m not putting in too much hope but yea. I want to go to Harvard so its not like I am going to get any money from being a NMSF but it would have been nice. lol.

223 in CA - what do you think?

Got my scores today after I went in to see my counselor: 229 in CA! Really happy now, haha.
I should be fine for qualifying for being a semifinalist, right? Can anyone point me to what we do if we do qualify?
