Son finally got his access code from College Board via email…not from his school! School has been really slow to mail out the hard copy of his results. All the waiting paid off though as he got a 223 in Florida (76R 75M & 72W). We’re all beyond thrilled and good luck to all those awaiting their results.

ILfather – thanks for the explanation. :)

You’re welcome, @MamaBear16. I thought it was a good question, so I added it to the FAQ on the stickied thread.

If you’re above the historical range for your state, you should be okay, right? I got a 218 in NH, so I’m feeling pretty good (even though I made a lot of stupid mistakes in math and know I could’ve done much better) because last year’s cutoff score was 214 and the highest in recent years was 217. But I’m still a little nervous…

Am I correct in assuming that a 5-point jump would be unheard-of? Has it ever happened before?

We are in MD and junior DS just learned he scored 229 on the PSAT. We’re thinking he’s very likely to qualify for NMSF but know that we’ll need to wait many months to be sure. Of course, we are proud of him regardless and encouraging him as he prepares to take the SAT for the first time later this month
This is my first post to CC, having lurked for more than a year. I have gained so much valuable information from CC discussions and am grateful to have this wonderful resource.
Many thanks to you dedicated posters and good luck to all.

ILFather- I am still quite new to CC- not sure if you received my private post with email info. Yours came through encrypted. AZSunshine

Is 216 good enough for NC???

Longtime Prep School sub-forum member dipping my toe in the “College” section.

Can anyone tell me why some schools wait until Jan to distribute scores? Daughter heard rumor that they distribute hard copy by state and so some states are delayed? She got her scores today (should be above BS geographic region cut-off) but I see from this thread that some folks got them back in early Dec?

I will now go read that FAQ thread.

We got our scores on Christmas day and the report said the cutoff for CA was 223.

SevenDad, some school counselors hold on to them to review them. Sometimes, they have to sort them into home room classes to be handed back and don’t get it together in time to do that before the break. My guess is they don’t think it is a big deal, because there is still time to learn from it to prep for the Jan SAT, and the NM process has months and months to go, yet. They don’t take into account our parental nerves!

1203southview, the CA cutoff for class of 2014 was 223, but for the class of 2015, we won’t know until September.

Son’s school has new college advisor, who gave scores to English teachers but told them to NOT give them to students. My son, however, has a very experienced and nearly retired teacher who ignored the new college advisor and told the kids their scores and access code. I felt bad for the other kids, but it did have a nice side-effect of no gossip about scores, since only the AP class got their scores before the break. I think all students now have scores. My son only knows of 3 kids in the NMSF range. Our school usually has 4-7 NMSF’s. So it may be that scores are down this year at his school or it may be that kids are just talking about it less.

Got 220 in VA. Last year’s VA cutoff was 222, but over the previous years it’s been between 217~220. Can be enough to get into the Semifinalists? I’m so worried…

232 international. Is this good enough?

ahhh, thanks barfly.

"232 international. Is this good enough? "

Yes but only if you are US citizen or permanent resident it will matter.

The NMSF cutoff scores increased for every state (except LA which was unchanged) this past year (for the class of 2014). For the prior year, the cutoff scores decreased for every state (again, except for LA which was unchanged). Down - Up -DOWN? I want to assume a pattern here, in which case this should be a DOWN year! Looks like prior years had been a mixed bag, with some states up, some down, and some unchanged, but the past 2 years have seen very constant decreases and increases. Just for fun, I would love to hear other opinions. Gives me something to consider as I impatiently wait for NMSF announcements in the fall. We should hear what the commended cutoff is within the next month, and I wonder if there is a correlation there. Does a decrease in the commended cutoff generally mean a decrease in the NMSF cutoff scores? I don’t think so.

Any predictions just for grins?

I got 223 in CA which is SUPER borderline for semi-finalist! Do you think CA’s cutoff will go up, down, or stay the same? Also, do they consider SAT scores when they select semi-finalists?

I am betting and hoping for scores to generally go down. Last year saw a record increase - all states except LA had an increase in cutoffs. Seems like a downward correction is in order!

To make semifinalist, you just need to meet the State cutoff score (and be otherwise eligible - a junior, etc.) Then, to progress to Finalist, you need to submit an SAT score that “confirms” your PSAT score. The essay part of the SAT is not included. So you take your Critical Reading and Math scores, then calculate your Writing score by taking your writing multiple choice score and multiplying by 10. Add those 3 scores together. In years past, that SAT score required was 1960. They will accept your highest SAT (not superscored). You also have to write an essay, get good recs from your school, and have good grades (I have heard stories of 1 D or 2 C’s knocking students out of finalist, but cannot confirm that).

@Barfly OK thx. THE CUTOFF MUST GO DOWN.
