Is it my imagination or are these scholarships not very substantial? It costs about 50K per year just to go there!

I think you need to look at it this way. This is a private university. Most have tuition at the 30K-42K level. Son received the presidental gold scholarship–covers about half or so of the private school tuition here. Yes, still leaves the other half plus room and board, etc.–so still requires about 25K plus. I know I am rounding a bit here. And this is a pure merit aid number- which is big. Many upper level privates do not offer merit aid (because almost everyone would qualify due to the high stats requirements–note schools like USC is an exception–but they are still very selective with those scholarships). We are from the midwest–and received a similar merit level-- a little higher with a department merit thrown in–but still leaves the same amount. The question is does your student wish to go to a private school or a public. A public is often less. But if your local public university is about 20K without scholarship–then another 5K or so for a private school may be within reach. It just matter what you value–and if you can afford it. So, in my opinion, it is a nice scholarship. If money is the primary issue, then maybe a private school is not for you. And keep in mind, if a family qualifies for needs based help–then it can be quite a bit lower. Full pay families may be quite happy with this scholarship. Not everyone is going to find that “full ride” opportunity, and if they do, the school may just not be the right fit. It all comes down to “is it worth it” in your view.

I agree with computerDad, laplatinum. Baylor is a private school and, as such, is pricey. My son also received a presidential scholarship but that still leaves Baylor more expensive than The University of Texas, a well regarded public school (we live in Texas). Thus, in our case, it’s a no-brainer–we are going with the public school. I might add that I am a graduate of Baylor University and find nothing compelling about it to choose it over a top-notch public university.

I have yet to hear from Baylor, I’m getting a bit worried :/

MannyR718, I got my acceptance letter late February. So there isn’t a hard and fast date that they send out the decisions. That being said, I believe all decisions should be sent out by the 15th of March. Best of luck!

I saw on my go baylor account, your accepted. I have not received an acceptance letter. Should I await the letter though Im an international student

Recs: didn’t see any of them. Hopefully good.
Short answer questions: I didn’t even take the time to look at those, and that may be why I got wait listed. It could have been a gesture saying that I have no interest in the school, but oh well… I have other schools in mind that I have been accepted to. Congrats to all who got accepted and best of luck to all of you in the future!

Well when did you apply?

I got wait listed too.

ACT:28
GPA: 3.85 UW/4.4 W
Missions trip to South Africa junior year. HEAVY involvement in one particular activity throughout high school (including awards and recognition).

I applied right before the February deadline, which, I didn’t know, automatically puts you in the rejects or the wait listed… They consider early action applicants first and if they fill up they have to reject (or wait list, in my case) everyone else. The great thing is that if you’re wait listed it means they DO want you… A lot. Otherwise they would just reject you. Plus your stats are INCREDIBLE.

I sent my material in about a week before the Deadline. But most of my other friends with similar stats all applied to Baylor way earlier than I did and got nice scholarships and what not. But I asked Baylor to take me off of the wait list because I got accepted to Michigan (haven’t gotten my financial aid packet), Case Western (with a 25K scholarship) and Illinois (12K scholarship) so I have other options to look at and a wait list at Wash U St. Louis. Thanks bmsanana! But I guess I won’t be taking my stats to Baylor though. It’s a good school though… No doubt. I’ll just have to tell all my friends to apply earlier. :P

Yes… They told us at an information session that 95 percent of the people who applied within the first month the application was open ( July, I think) were accepted. So we are applying as soon as possible this summer.

All: I would encourage any student to apply as soon as they can in the fall of their senior year. Get it done and then don’t worry about deadlines. You will find some schools have deadlines like November 1st for merit scholarship consideration (usually some state schools) where the private also have deadlines at different times. In terms of Baylor, FWIW, son literally applied the day before the deadline–last minute prodding by his father. He had already applied to 6 or 7 schools–which is plenty. He as accepted but there were no real holes in his resume. GPA at 4.0 Unweighted in the most challenging program offered is a no-brainer for a school. Pretty good ACT at 33 and the merit dollars are automatic. Faith based school with plenty of community service–many EC’s with leadership position. It would be hard pressed for Baylor not to offer a spot. I see where some applicants were waitlisted. You never know really why–but the order of importance at most schools certainly starts with the GPA and the difficulty of the path chosen by the student. Most of the time, all of the other items will not make up for it. I think Baylor is a reasonable school though–so unless they really filled many of their spots early on–then it simply becomes a numbers game. Future applicants–don’t put off the application process if a school is within your top 3-5.

In my opinion, the school should be forthcoming about its “policy” that is basically first come first serve. I have never heard of that in any other college. Generally, every application that comes in before the stated REGULAR deadline (not the early deadline!) is weighed equally without regard to when it came in. I have no problem with Baylor doing it differently. I have a problem with them not making that clear. I am very disappointed in how the school has handled this situation and do not feel that it reflects well on the idea of pursuing excellence in any way, shape or form. Very, very disappointing.
