Class of 2016 members who want to transfer

I told my advisor (who also happens to be the department head) that I was wanting to transfer last Friday and he was rather supportive about it. However, yesterday, I get contacted by the financial aid office that they were upgrading my scholarship to one that pays a stipend and lowers my tuition by a third. I am not sure if those two events were related in anyway.

I’ll also need to pick a safety school.

Current School: 4 year private university in Texas

Schools applying to: USC (not sure if I’ll apply anywhere else yet)

Major: double major in film and psychology right now, but because of how competitive the film school is at USC, I doubt i’ll get in so I might do psychology and international relations? (also genuinely interested in IR but it seems pretty popular there too so it also might be competitive)

HS GPA: 3.92 weighted…not sure what it is unweighted because we went by a percentage grade and my counselor only converted the weighted (~96)

College GPA: 3.8-3.9? right now I have all A’s except one B (it’s an 88 so hopefully I can pull it up 2 points) aiming for a 4.0!

SAT: 1980

EC’s in High School: student council for 3 years (communications chair junior year and courtesy committee chair senior year), NHS, Ambassadors program (leadership and service group), Asian club (secretary junior year, co-president senior year), German club, 1 summer volunteering at hospital, 2 years volunteering as a TA at my church, over 200 hours of community service

EC’s in College: the Crew (event and activities planning organization for the school), Crew Academy (leadership training), Asian Student Association (running for VP soon), International Student Association (Beyond Borders volunteer board), Quidditch team lol

Took lots of honors courses and “lots” of AP courses (not compared to a lot of you guys but considered a lot out of what my small private high school offered) and got the AP scholar distinction.

Reasons for transferring: academics, opportunities, and alumni relations/network at USC, Korean department (I want to take Korean as my foreign language pretty badly), my current school being way too close to home on top of it being where my two older sisters went (I desperately feel the need to branch out), the great diverse city of L.A., the international students and diversity at USC (current school is not very diverse at all), also social unhappiness a little bit
Do you guys think these are good valid reasons?

I think the thing I’m most worried about right now is my credits. If I completely switch my major around like that it would mean I would have no major courses done yet because this year I only took core classes (which may or may not work for some of USC’s core) and one film class. I plan to take my major course recommendations and GE (core) courses next semester though >< hoping this will be ok…

Good luck to everyone! All of you guys are such great candidates with really good stats.

I hope so! Those are the EXACT reasons why I want to transfer to USC! Just replace Korean with Japanese, lol. Plus, I grew up around USC/have family who live 5 minutes away.

I have a meeting with my advisor this week to discuss Spring 2013 classes, and I’m not sure how to tell him I’m transferring without offending him. Oh well… My school’s 4-year graduation rate, around 10% (only around 3% transfer out), is one reason why I’m looking to transfer ASAP. Maybe if I throw that in there, he’ll understand…
Right now I have a 4.0, but that might change tomorrow when I find out my Anthropology midterm grade lol.

Current School: Eastern Michigan

Schools applying to: UMich, possibly others but I haven’t decided yet.

Major: I anticipate it to be computer science or computer engineering.

HS GPA: ~2.5

College GPA: Not sure yet, but I’m shooting for at least a 3.5 by the middle of my sophomore year.

ACT: 27

EC’s in High School: 3 sport athlete.

EC’s in College: As of now, nothing. Suggestions?

@LaChicaBuena awesome! but eeek wow 10%, yeah that’s reason enough :\ lol. I’m not sure if you should tell your counselor that’s the reason though xD maybe something along the lines of the school you want to transfer to is better fitted to the academic goals you have in mind? and I’m in the same exact predicament! (over not wanting to offend my advisor). I actually posted on another thread about that yesterday. I talked to my advisor about it the day before and luckily she wasn’t mad. However, that was my first time meeting her (they keep changing my counselor, idk why…) so it’s not like we had a relationship to ruin in the first place. On top of that, my main reason for meeting with her was to tell her I was thinking of dropping that major she’s in charge of :\ so I don’t think I’ll ever be seeing her again (my change of major has already been approved). she didn’t take it personally or anything, thankfully. I can only hope for the best when I talk to my other advisor and/or the office of registrar when I tell them I need help with picking classes for transferring…

@gasparov11 anything you’re interested in? they want to get a sense of who you are and what interests/matters to you. Do you like sports? student government? different cultures? volunteering? if you can, I’d suggest ones with leadership roles.

Since I’m not a natural science affiliated major(s) (Double in Philosophy and Political Science), what is recommended that demonstrates an interest in these fields? Will extensive campaign experience suffice?

^ Campaign experience is good. What do you mean by “extensive” though? And activities such as Model UN and college Democrats (or Republicans) are also helpful.

College I’ll be attending: SUNY Buffalo State
High School GPA: 76% average :frowning:
SAT: 1100/1600
College GPA: 3.8 (15 Credits)
Colleges I wish to transfer to: Wisconsin, Northeastern, UMich, and UNC.

Unfortunately my high school grades I think are really gonna hold me back… I really want to transfer ASAP because I want the full college experience and I don’t think going after my sophomore year is going to do that. =/

Hoping to transfer to Vandy, Wisconsin, Cornell, UVA. Econ. Currently attending 2nd tier liberal arts college in the west. 3.97 hs gpa, 2050 SAT. College first sem gpa 3.8? Community service, on-campus job. Lots of HS sports leadership and some other ecs.

Do these seem attainable? Any other suggestions for top 20 econ programs? I know I can get updated (and good) reccs from my hs, and from a college prof. That whole professor recc is awkward isn’t it? (I hate your school, but would you write a recc for me?)

Attending: Freshman at mid-tier Ivy which shall not be named.
HS GPA: 4.0/4.67
SAT: 2390

College I wish to transfer to: UC Berkeley… yea I know most people do the opposite

^See the UC Transfers subforum.

I got a state school in Wisconsin

I want to transfer to either UW-Madison, DePaul, or Loyola. I was even considering two schools in New York, but I don’t know.

My HS GPA was not very good. My ACT was average.

My college GPA should be around 3.5, maybe higher if I can get my stupid math grade up!

Has anyone started the application processs? Also, I’m scared of telling my advisor I want to transfer, because I’m not 100% sure, or 100% sure I’ll get in and receive the suffice amount of scholarship and financial aid. Advice?

I am international student at CCC. Maybe in 2015, I will apply for UCB, UCLA, Cornell, UWashington, NYU…

I really want to go to UC Berkeley or UCLA but their acceptance rates for international students are pathetically low. We are paying triple than another students but we have less seats…I wish I could born as an ASIAN - AMERICAN. Their acceptance rate is huge in UC Berkeley.

I’m a senior in high school in California.I go to Manual arts.
Gpa unweighted 3.08 weighted 3.30
Sat:1215
Act: 20
College I’m attending: CSU Humboldt

I’m interested in accounting and economics I can’t wait for college.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using CC

College: Northeastern
HS GPA: 3.3
ACT: 29
SAT: 1880
College GPA: Unavailable
Colleges I’m considering: Univ. of Montana, Tulane, Univ of Oklahoma, UNC Wilmington, Vanderbilt. If I don’t get in, I’ll probably take a year of classes back home and try to TAG to a UC or CSULB(I’m a CA resident).
Reason I’m transferring: NU is great and I love the friends I’ve made; but I can’t justify the crippling debt I’d have to be in, especially now that I’ve decided I want to be a teacher. Also, NU has a pretty lackluster English program, though I would love to go on a co-op lol

P.S. To any kids applying to college who may be reading this, please consider the debt you’re willing to go in for school and make sure the schools your considering have a wide range of majors that interest you!!

College: Lehigh Valley area school ¶
Major: International studies/public health/pre-med
HS GPA: 2.6? (I bombed freshman and part of sophomore year… lets not get into that now. Private college-prep school)
ACT:29
SAT: took it once, never submitted scores.
College GPA: around 3.4-3.6 (don’t know yet… best guestimate)
HS extras: Model UN, Lacrosse, state wide award for ceramics, lots of community service,
College extras: walk on lax team,
Colleges I’m considering: I want a bigger school with a better public/global health program and a better international studies program, most likely in a city, if not than somewhere near a good ski mountain. I also want a more diverse student body (i.e not just from tri-state area). Currently looking at NYU, BU, GWU, American, Barnard (far reach), Hopkins (another far, far reach), maybe Colby, Bates, Bowdoin.

Perhaps you can join Model UN at your collegee and continue community service. You will probably get into BU and American with your current GPA, but for NYU and Johns Hopkins, you would need a 3.67+ to be considered competitive.

Unfortunately there is no model UN at my school, and there isn’t enough interest to justify starting one. Believe me, I’ve tried. I really, really want to transfer to a school where I can participate in MUN though.

bump…anyone else?

Whether or not I’m even going to attempt to transfer will depend on my final GPA. Socially, I feel well adjusted to the college I’m currently at. However, if I decide to transfer it would be have to be based on academics. I’m in physics, but I frankly have no idea how the undergraduate physics program at Umass Amherst compares to other undergraduate programs in that area. So far my I’m disappointed in the lack of rigor most “gen-ed” classes have as well as many large intro classes. But of course, the classes that really do count for my career will mainly be the higher level physics classes I’ll be taking my junior and senior year. My long term career goals are to eventually go into grad school, but I still don’t know which area of research I want to go into.
