I believe I had posted earlier but it fell into the abyss of the thread. Just to recap, I’d like to transfer to NYU, Brown, or Northwestern. Currently a philosophy/poli sci double major, but philosophy is what I really like to study. Grades for first semester just got released and I ended up with a 3.65 (A-, A-, A (PHL), B+), my high school GPA was around 3.9 and I ended up graduating top 10, lastly, my SAT score is 2090. Would you say I have a chance to get into one/any of those colleges?

Demodogjr, my stats are about the same as yours, even including the SATs, though I think I’ll have a slightly higher first sem GPA. I’ll be interested to see what people think. I am looking at Emory, Vanderbilt, Tufts, Duke, Cornell, Wake, GW, UVA. It doesn’t seem like people “chance” much, so I guess what I would rather know is, if these are too much of a reach, what would comparable academic schools be for poli sci/econ?

@Demodogjr Your high school record is strong, which will work in your favor since high school record still carries a considerable amount of weight as a sophomore transfer. As for your college GPA, you will unfortunately be competing with people who have GPAs of 3.8 or above, and probably the same SAT score. Your GPA would mark you a borderline student, so your essays and extracurricular activities will significantly matter. Just do better next semester; aim for straight A’s. Most colleges require a midterm report, so they’ll see your improvement. I think you have a great chance at NYU.

@Newtocollege No, the schools you listed are not out of your reach, considering your strong high school record and your good college GPA. You should consider applying to Georgetown. I am studying political science and economy as well and my college GPA is a 3.75. My ACT score is a 30, but my high school GPA is atrociously low.

Newtocollege, I definitely recommend Georgetown as well to follow up what Rain202 had stated. I believe Washington University - St. Louis has a nice political science program (can’t be entirely sure about this, but nevertheless had heard it). Overall, I believe we’re applying to similar caliber colleges/universities.

By the way, is the previously mentioned midterm report is it sent with the transfer application in March? (Also, I’m a first year, sorry for the lack of clarification in regards to my recent post)

What about for Econ? And I heard Georgetown is pretty biased toward catholics (obviously) which I am not. Any econ suggestions?

Have you looked at/into Northwestern, NYU, or U Michigan?

Love my current school but finances are forcing me to explore my options. Think I have my list but not sure where my stats really put me in terms of where to target (what level school is a safety/match/reach)?

Brown, Cornell-HumEc, UPenn-LPS, Georgetown, Vanderbilt, UNC-CH, U-Miami

College GPA: 4.0

Do you think that my high school GPA will kill my chances?

I am an international student at CCC. So I want to transfer to one of the Ivy League schools. Should I take SAT or ACT ?

@uofiapplicant
This is helpful [U of I Admissions: Junior Transfer Grade Point Average (GPA) Guidelines](Page Not Found, Illinois Undergraduate Admissions)
You should definitely take the SATs as soon as possible. Also, what are your extracurricular activities?

@dude23 For the majority of elite universities, they are required for transfer applicants. But some schools will waive the requirement if you have been out of college for a certain number of years, but that’s obviously not the case. Others, like Johns Hopkins, do not require them.

@dotori As a sophomore transfer, high school will still carry a considerable amount of weight because the colleges you’re applying to can only see one full semester of college grades. I don’t think it will “kill” your chances, especially since you have shown improvement in your senior year.

@Rain
I don’t really have an EC’s. Will probably get a job soon but that’s about it. Should I take the SAT, even though I’ll miss the priority deadline? I talked an admissions counselor and I have every requirement for sophomore and junior transfer except the language recommendation (school doesn’t offer german).
I also read this from a u of I blog:
For most majors, if you meet the GPA guidelines and complete the required coursework and you will be admitted

Hey Class of 2016,

I plan on applying to UPenn Engineering next year (as a sophomore). Here are my stats:

-School: Villanova University
-Major: Computer Engineering
-Fall 2012 GPA: 3.67
-HS GPA: 3.45 UW
-ACT: 27

What should I to improve my chances? Should I retake ACT or take the SAT I/II?

To clarify, I’m applying so that if I get accepted, I will be entering UPenn as a junior.

I am applying next year (for a junior year) for economics, transferring from CC in Indiana. My dream school is UCB, but I know I’ll barely have a chance of getting in…
Other options are: Boston University (top choice), Boston College, University of San Francisco, USC and UCLA (almost 0 chance for both), and researching others

HS GPA: 3.52 (my first 2 years of HS were in Russia, where I come from)
Positive trend in grades (freshman - 2 C’s, then mostly A’s, and senior year - 3 B’s, 9 A’s)

Fall 2012 CC GPA: 3.7 (one B came from high school dual credit, second B - 89%)
I hope to get straight A’s later on.

In Ivy Tech CC (sounds fancy, but it is not an Ivy school or something lol)

major: Liberal Arts with Honors

Just got in American Honors program, will take 3 honors courses next semester + rigorous curriculum

SAT: 1750 (took it my first spring in the US 1.5 years ago, definitely will have a higher score now, working on it and will re-take it)

Not many EC’s… I didn’t use chances in HS. There were no clubs or anything in my Russian HS. When I came here for my junior year it took time to adapt, and I didn’t know how the college system works, and that it is important to do EC’s, and I didn’t have a car
Now I’m in CC with no tennis team (I play tennis) and only a few clubs (like an African-American club where I do not belong).

What do you guys think? I am desperate to hear opinions!!
Hope we all get in the universities of our dreams :)

What are my chances of transferring to Binghamton , SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Old westbury?
I am a first year at another suny school
My High school GPA was 3.7 with low SAT scores
I just finished my first semester and my GPA is 3.41

I’m applying as a BIO major at those schools and i want to know my chances

Which School will i be able to get into?

DrDre94 Your ACT score is a bit low for Penn, but since you’re applying as a junior, don’t bother retaking them. At that point, high school matters less than college.

ruslanoz Cool, I am applying to BU as well! I think you have a good chance at BU; the average GPA of accepted transfer students is a 3.5.

DeDe94 Your college GPA can be higher. Also, what was your SAT score?
