New member here and I realized a few months back that this entire process is mind numbing. S was accepted into Allegheny, Arcadia, Drake, Carroll, CSULong Beach, UC Davis, TCU, and UC Berkeley. Major is PolySci. He is now juggling Davis, TCU, and Berkeley. I think he will choose Berkeley as my middle S is an alum, but TCU is appealing to him also. I do not care as long as it is soon OVER. Everyday we have discussions about the pros and cons of each college and I tell him I make decisions faster than he does. But with me being a single parent for years he is use to us talking quite a bit about all things. I will definitely miss talking to him about things. Good luck to all of you!!

DD got into: UCSB, Seattle U with acceptance in the honors program (just heard today) and $19K in merit money (which makes it cheaper than UCSB for us, even though we are in-state); she also has been accepted into American University with $10K – we’re waiting on appeal for need-based aid, and going to admitted students’ day Friday – and Lewis and Clark, also with $10K in merit aid. Wait-listed at George Washington and University of Portland. Turned down for Tulane (well, deferred; they invited her to re-apply sophomore year), UC Berkeley, and UC San Diego. Also turned down by Pomona – expected – and Pitzer, which we didn’t expect.

The only problem now is that she is down to two schools: American University is a better choice for her life plans, but Seattle U is hugely better in terms of financial security. Still up in the air until this weekend. Ugh, I am SO tired of “running the numbers” to see how we’re going to manage to make it work with DH a year or two from retirement!

My daughter was accepted to:

Beloit College, Case Western Reserve Univ., Vanderbilt Univ., Swarthmore College
Wellesley College, Vassar College, Bryn Mawr College, Hamilton College
Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College. Waitlisted at Wesleyan Univ.

Today we sent her deposit to Smith :)

My son accepted:

Univ.of San Diego-merit scholarship $10,000/ year
UCSD
UCSB

Sent deposit this week to USD! Glad it’s over…

It’s been over for us now for about two weeks. My daughter has decided to attend Fordham University. Put the deposit down two weeks ago and went to Admitted Students Day last week. Congrats to everyone on their decisions.

We are all so relieved our son has accepted a very generous offer
To attend the university of Rochester. It’s been such a long , but definitely
Worthwhile process, we get to do it all over this August with our next son who’s a jr
In hs. At least I know what I’m doing now!
Congratulations to the "very competitive " class of 2017!!!

Congratulations, everyone. What a process it’s been.

Last day for son to decide:
University of Rochester with 5500 in loans
Emory with all (tuition, room and board) but about 5000 covered in aid, must also get health insurance.
SUNY Geneseo with no loans necessary
College of Wooster 6500 in loans

Did not get into Princeton (first choice), Dartmouth, Duke or Brown but very happy with the offers he got.

Eight acceptances out of 8 applications; no financial aid but 6 merit scholarships. D picked Sarah Lawrence College over Fordham at Lincoln Center, the New School, Hampshire College, Sunys New Paltz and Purchase, Drew University and Hunter College. Very happy with the intense, intimate nature of the SLC curriculum.

My dd got accepted at
Chapman University
UCI
U of San Diego
Loyola Marymount
U of San Francisco
Saint Marys of CA
Dominican University of Ca
CSU Channel Islands
Simmons College
University of Portland
NAU

Denied at UCSD, UCSB, UCLA, UC Berkley, Cal Poly San Luis Opisbo

All with Merit Scholarships except for U of San Diego and some with Honors. Got wait listed at Pepperdine which was her top choice. Of course, U of San Diego was her 2nd choice and their financial package wasn’t very good. She has appealed the Merit at U of San Diego but told her won’t hear from them until after May 1. We gave a deposit to Chapman which is a great school and they her a great financial package. Major is Biochemistry and she will continue to swim there.

Very happy process is coming to a close! Very stressful and busy time! Now I know how the process works and will know what to do with her sister in 3 yrs!

Kristikuka, my good friend’s daughter just graduated from Smith and loved it! Also, I had a good friend many yrs ago in med school who was a Smith grad and raved about Smith. My son is starting at Amherst in the fall, a long trip from our Missouri home, and he is so excited. We looked at Smith, since it is in the Five College Consortium with Amherst and he could take a class there. It is really beautiful! Congrats to your daughter!

The mountains drew my son to Montana. In fact, he only applied to Montana.

jennieling - my older son is at Hampshire College and has taken several classes at Amherst. The Five College Consortium is fabulous! Amherst is such a great college town. I hope he enjoys Amherst College!

Oh - and I should say too my younger son will be attending Bates College in the fall - we’re so happy that he was accepted and has chosen to attend as it felt “just right” from the minute we set foot on campus. He was accepted at Bates, Union, Clark, UMass/Amherst, UNH, RIT; waitlisted at BC and Tulane, and rejected at Dartmouth, Vanderbilt and Northeastern (the NEU rejection kind of surprised me). Vanderbilt was one that flooded our mailbox with literature so he applied thinking “why not”; in hindsight I really wish he hadn’t bothered applying after seeing their stats.

What a stressful few months!

thank you for your kind comments, jennieling. she is so excited, i’m thrilled the college search ended, and ended so well. this was her overwhelming choice. best wishes for your son at amherst.

accepted UMBC, Clarkson, Trinity, Elon, Lake Forest (honors and lots of merit aid),
U of Denver (merit aid and honors), Union (merit aid) Colorado College
Waitlisted at Middlebury, Colby and Wake Forest
Denied at Dartmouth (not shocked), Bowdoin and Tufts
Still deciding
Any thoughts?

My daughter almost went to Lake Forest (LFC)…they have great science, sports, diversity, and FA, along with a beautiful campus. Ended up at Occidental over Colby and Bucknell. LFC was part of the final four…I’d definitely take a look. Great aid packaage at Oxy too!

BT Mell:

So glad to hear your son is attending Bates. It was our D’s very first college visit and set the bar for all that followed. Know friends whose kids attend and they love it.

As for your Vandy experience, sounds like your son did exactly what was intended, which was to apply there after being worn down with mail that, in quantity as well as content, made him feel “wanted”, even if he had a slim chance of getting in. Our house was also deluged (and it’s not an exaggeration to use that verb in the case of a handful of colleges, including Bates, I might add), by mail from Vandy.

It’s hard not to take such bait, isn’t it? A true test of will!

My daughter applied to just three schools: UPenn-Wharton, NYU-Stern and Villanova.

Got accepted at NYU-Stern (ED) after getting a rejection from UPenn-Wharton (ED). She didn’t get to finish the application with Villanova due to NYU-Stern’s acceptance. She loves NYC and is excited about going to school there.

Took our D to freshman registration at Monmouth College (IL) earlier this month. She proficiencied out of their foreign language requirement, and will get 9 credits for dual-credit math classes from her HS (which won’t count toward the “gen eds,” though ). No word yet on how much credit they’ll grant for a 4 on the AP US History test (they’ve been “reimagining” the history dept. there, so their equivalent U.S. history survey course isn’t offered to freshmen). She did get to meet her roommate & see her dorm room (so we have a much more realistic idea of what will & won’t fit in the dorm room). Having a lot of fun dorm-shopping now (something her big brother had zilch interest in as an incoming freshman, so Mom has a lot of pent-up dorm shopping lust to use this summer! ).

Hi gondalineinNJ - I just saw your note and thanks for your response. I feel a little stupid for falling for the Vandy marketing. He’s my youngest so I can’t benefit from the experience!
