Class of 2018 Carnegie Mellon RD Discussion

SCS is pretty unpredictable. How much do you think Siemens Regional Finalist and getting a ~110 on the AMC 12 and a 4 & 5 on the AIME would help? Also, do you think SCS would even care if an applicant competed in states, nationals tournaments in a sport? I know CMU is not need-based but I come from a low-income family. Apparently, CMU is going to offer me a Perkins Loan or something because on my financial aid portal it says I would need to submit a “Perkins Loan Promissory Note” just yesterday. So, I assume they prepared a package for me - but doesn’t mean I am in.

agg, you seem qualified enough, but then again, so are hundreds of other applicants. I scored 2400 on the SAT I, 2390 combined in three SAT II tests, national merit finalist, 99 on AMC 12, a 6 on the AIME, and I’m salutatorian of my class. No major award like siemens, but I feel like I’m still sorta competitive. That is, I did, until I got waitlisted by Northwestern…grumble grumble grumble…

@Tarheel714 SCS is unpredictable but wow! I think you have a great chance to get in. Good luck! Is SCS your top choice or what?

we’ll see. Yeah, SCS is top, and then Tepper. didn’t apply to a third.

Well, I meant is CMU your top-choice?

Whoa people those are pretty large figures there.
Anyway you seem to have mentioned a lot about AMC and AIME, will it be fundamentally compromising if I haven’t taken one? From ED results in my country I never figured applicants like you will be worrying about your chances at SCS.

@Keepyourshirton

I honestly never heard about the tests until the beginning of my senior year, and my friend who was accepted ED to SCS did not take either, but he does have a strong background in CS. Also, I have a 36 ACT with 2330 SAT II (800 Math 2, 800 Physics, 730 Chem), have a 4.0UW/4.5 weighted gpa (ranked 9 in an extremely competitive high school), great ECs and I’m still worried about my chances since the school is so selective  especially after the results I’ve had so far…

I never would have mentioned the AMC/AIME, but agg999 posted his scores, so I might as well post mine. I doubt its a major factor, and it more than likely won’t change a decision at all.

Guys those are some really high SAT scores…

nochanceSCS

I wish I was optimistic with my scores, but after being waitlisted at 2 places and rejected at one, a 2400 doesn’t cut it anymore. We’ll see, but apparently nothing is guaranteed. Also, many elite schools love to brag how they can even reject perfect scores. I really hope I’m not the guy that validates their statement.

I wish they did post them online! I live in Ohio, so it shouldn’t take too long for it to get here, but still !

any ideas on envelope sizes people?

No idea

For those of you who get letters tomorrow, don’t forget to post how the envelope looks like :D

waitlist… it is a regular white envelope, btw

@wucollegeconf hang in there many will choice ivy. What state are you from?

toronto, and I bought the fedex (to find out about the wl earlier) since i’m an international

wait, I’m from the states and I never chose which method of shipment. is shipping options only for international?

It says on FB that there were 35,000 plus appplications, but somewhere I saw last year was a record with 18,000 or something like that…any idea what that means?

CMU said they got a record number of applicants this year, around 35,000. They posted their admissions stats by specific school on their twitter @CM_admissions
