Carnegie Mellon RD discussion thread 2016

For all things related to CMU admissions and hopes for current applicants.....

I'm not expecting to go to Carnegie Mellon because they probably won't give my family financial aid and we can't afford it unless they match some another offer, but I'm still excited and nervous to see if I'll get in.

I applied to

CIT for chemical engineering

MCS for physics

SCS for CS

I didn't know that we didn't have to choose 3 schools. Is it unusual though, say in my case, for an applicant to get waitlisted/rejected in his/her first choice but accepted at the second or third choice? (my supplemental essay was heavily focused on engineering, math, and physics). Also is it true that CIT is much more competitive for Chemical engineering? Or is that electrical engineering i'm referring to?

no other 2016 applicants here? =o

I didn’t know that you could apply to three colleges. I thought it was two.

I applied to H&SS and CFA (visual art). The wait seems never ending!

Applied to Tepper

Out of curiosity, what aspects of CMU do you guys like and dislike? And what other places did you apply?

I didn’t even realize I applied to 3. I did the “top 3 choices” question on the commonapp, then in there “Where am i in the process” it has the 3 schools listed in the order i chose with the “decision” column next to it.

I like CMU because it’s in an urban setting and i also like the types of students that go there and the overall structure of the university

Ahh, I see. I love CMU’s campus and the area its in. I like the programs they offer, and I feel like the environment is engaging and creative. I go back and forth about the highly focused way the university is set up though. Where else are you interested in going?

I would also love to go to Columbia (similar reasons), but both are a bit unrealistic because of the financial costs. Without those 2, I would have to choose between Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and SUNY Buffalo. However, I read here that CMU may match financial aid from RPI (they are peer institutions), where I have that RPI medal so, if I get accepted to CMU and they match the financial aid, then I’m set :)

How about you if CMU doesn’t work out?

Ahh good luck!! I’ve heard good things about RPI (and Columbia too, obviously  ). I’m hoping CMU might match my award from Case Western, but I highly doubt it. I wonder if there is any chance CMU will send out their admissions decisions closer to March 15th than April 15th. It would be so nice to know earlier…

On the CSS Profile, it says that financial aid decisions become available on March 26th, so I’d guess that admissions decisions will come out no later than the 26th.

I applied to SCS and MCS.

The application will let you choose up to 4 schools, but it says that you won’t be seriously considered unless you write about your interest in that school in your supplemental essay.

Hmm no fellow Tepper applicants?

Ahh very good to know!
cortana431, I didn’t see the last line of your post before. My other top choices are University of Rochester, Vassar, and then Penn and Brown, which will never in a million years happen. :)

@Jessey there’s one right here waves hand

@cortana431 Depending on the school I’ve heard it’s actually common to get knocked from your first choice to your second choice if you’ve picked a less competitive school as your second/third choices, though in your case you picked from somewhat difficult/less difficult/MIT-level difficult as far as difficulty goes with getting into the schools you’ve listed.

@compulsive

Glad to see another Tepper applicant! What were your reasons for applying?

@ Jessey

Mostly as a back-up for if Penn M&T turned me away (which unfortunately it did :’( ), since I could minor comp sic and then try for the Computational Finance program. Plus, it’s also where my friend said I should go if I couldn’t get into Wharton for business.

:( sorry about Penn M&T. That has to be insanely tough to get into. But if you’re using CMU as a back up, you must have pretty awesome stats  And CMU still has a great reputation… I stayed with someone for a sleeping bag weekend who got a summer internship by talking to someone who sat next to her on a plane. He asked what school she went to, her major, and her GPA. She got a paid internship, as a first semester freshman. Not bad.

I’m a RD applicant too! I applied to

 1. CIT (electrical & computer engineering)
 2. SCS
 3. MCS (physics)

well I don’t really expect to get accepted since I didn’t meet TOEFL 102 requirement… I just hope I won’t be rejected automatically :(

So regarding finding out our decisions, are the acceptance packages starting to get sent about week after March 15th, but the decisions are all posted on line around march 29? (according to last years thread)

Wow… I applied for the same three department with the same order and major also! But I’m also worried about being automatically rejected because of my TOEFL score. Would colleges really do that? I think missing one or two points won’t make considerable difference…Does anyone have a similar experience?
