Class of 2018- Why do you choose Emory?

Although Emory is not my number 1 school, I like the college because I visited the school last summer and could see myself potentially living there for 4 years! What's your main reason?

small classes, a few incredible professors…

This is kind of unorthodox, but what I like about Emory is that every day, in class or whatever–each hour is very much live, and real. People aren’t so pretentious. You can work your way up in your department. And the things you say in class, the discussions you have in office hours, the papers you write and the comments you get back–you feel like you own these things.

Actually, I’m not class of 2018, but I wanted to answer anyway. Good luck with your college search.

Emory Scholars program, ranking, an incredible campus, and majors offered. Just the whole atmosphere.

ranking?! Seriously, no-one else make this even a part of the reason you choose Emory (unless you research it and its departments deep enough and determine that it is indeed “different” and deserving of its rank in your mind). The other stuff is fine. Plenty of lower ranked schools may actually be much better in many areas. Please don’t look at top 20s and say “they’re ranked in the top 20, I want to go there because they must be great”. Research it, see if you like how it looks on paper beyond its rank, and then come visit if you can.

Doryphorus, sounds like I may have had more incredible professors than you did lol :stuck_out_tongue: , which is interesting since I was a science major (science depts at even the most selective research institutions are notorious for the amount of bad profs. they have, and Emory has its share, but it seems to be much less than you would expect from a Research 1 university).

It was my experiences with the staff there that ultimately influenced my decision. Professors were so approachable that I managed to have a nice talk (like 10minutes) with a biology professor while in line at starbucks on campus. I figured if the teachers were that open to complete strangers that they’d be even better to their students. Plus the location, rankings, and size didn’t hurt.

I will admit that the faculty are unusually accessible for a research-1 institution (even in comparison to those of similar size). Hanging out at Starbucks with a professor is not uncommon. I had an organic chemistry professor that will hold office hours on places like the quad, the library deck, MSci patio, etc. It’s easy to form quite beneficial faculty-student relationships that result in great mentoring, far before you even pursue something like a research project or an honors thesis. All of this is what I would consider the general “community feel” of Emory. If you want a rich academic experience, it will be rather easy to have these sorts of experiences with faculty members (if you don’t care, you won’t get it and have a rather average experience despite what all Emory has to offer).

When she says “a few incredible professors”, she means “some incredible professors”. Not “a small number of incredible professors”.

I back the professors statement up. Not why I chose it, but if I could pick the things I loved the most, it would be in the top 3.

The environment of Emory just clicked with me as soon as I visited. With other schools, I could shrug my shoulders and say “I suppose I would be happy here,” I knew as soon as I stepped onto Emory’s campus that it was where I would be happy.

Now I just have to cross my fingers and pray that I get in, hah. I applied through Questbridge, so I won’t know for a while.

I suppose you’re right as she may be basing it on her findings during an admissions visit.

LOL, aluminum knows exactly what I mean, haha.

naegami, I hope you get in, too. :)

(order does not signify anything)

The CDC is right next door. I cannot tell you how much that will help for whatever medical research I want to do.

CNN is next door too. Getting published anyone?

Atlanta.

I can compete on the track team

Amazing campus/facilities

Awesome people (at least that I met)

Study abroad at University of Melbourne (CRAZY RESEARCH/AUSTRALIAN WOMEN HELLLOOOOO)

Pre med track

The business school

Want anything else? This is why I want to go and hopefully will get in ED.

My daughter chose Emory because of the student diversity, size (not too small or large), proximity to Atlanta, lovely campus, and strengths in majors she is thinking about. She’s a freshman and has felt very comfortable on campus, made friends, plays in the orchestra and enjoys her work study job. She’s found lots of opportunities to do fun things both on and off campus. The amount of homework is challenging at times, but not overwhelming and the professors are very accessible. When we visited the campus last April for the first time (after she was accepted), it was the last school she saw and she loved it.

I would think it would be quite difficult for someone else to tell YOU why Emory is the choice for YOU. Emphasis on the “YOU.”

Hi there, I am a member of the Class of 2017. I choose Emory because of the liberal arts environment with options. I loved how Emory is a traditional liberal arts school if you want it to be, and be a very pre-professional school if you are looking for that as well. I felt and still feel that I have no doors closed ahead of me attending Emory. I am a computer science political science major to show you what i mean. Those two majors do not typically combine well at other schools but at Emory it is just fine ( I know TONS of music and bio/ dance <insert science="" math="" history="" anything="" here=""> majors). Also the first time I stepped on the quad I felt like I belonged at Emory. It was a strange experience, all I wanted to do was lie under a tree and read a book (which I have done many times this semester)</insert>

I’m an applicant and not too sure about whether I will be accepted or not…kind of worried honestly because I really love the school. Nonetheless, I choose Emory because it seems like a great institution. I met an admissions officer who was a student there at one point and we really bonded. The school seems to have great people there and the professors are rumored to be fantastic. I kind of stalked a couple students and messaged them on facebook about the school, so yeah (judge me). It’s also very diverse for a school of its caliber and is well respected. Love the traditions w/ Dooley and the whole Wonderful Wednesday deal. Plus, not to sound like a fangirl but the marble buildings look awesome compared to other institutions that have that whole gothic thing going on. I hate gothic buildings smh. Anyways, that’s why I choose Emory and I am aware that I am super late posting on this thread…
