Frazzled-my D will also be at the 11/16 BW audition!! See you there!

Enjoy the peace before the craze. I too was feeling pretty good about everything… Until I feel yesterday and broke my leg.
Yep, not kidding. Now I’m in a cast and a boot for 8 weeks and will just get it off in time for the main audition season to start in January. So, if it’s quiet in your neck of the woods I’d recommend enjoying it.

iammtmom, since you asked…D auditioned last year at Elon. There was a huge group of auditioners on that Friday (2/8/13, I believe). They were divided into two groups and the groups rotated to do their dance audition, monologues, and songs. Within each group they were called alphabetically, I think. Still, we were there from 8am until probably 9 or 10pm, a VERY LONG DAY, so bring lots of snacks or be prepared to run and grab food to bring your poor starving child. It was well-organized, but just far too many kids to get through in one day, so quite exhausting for them all. Loved the school, beautiful campus, strong program, friendly faculty and students - so was a great audition experience otherwise.

D just went to Muhlenberg today for an audition (scholarship only, not required and I don’t think they have any pull with admissions but I could be wrong), tour, and got to sit in on an acting class. Charles Richter, head of the theater department is great. Very personable and enthusiastic about the program, put my daughter at ease, really seems to know everyone past and present and cares about the students.

There is no musical theater major per se but the way the school is structured it is possible to major in theater/acting, minor in dance and minor in music (which gives you the voice training a serious MT student would want). Muhlenberg has a very serious dance program with levels in all disciplines (ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, modern, African dance) and allows kids with prior dance experience to test into a higher level.

Very pretty campus and the students D and I met were very friendly, answered all of our questions and truly love their college. It was a very good experience for my daughter and she came away from today with a very positive outlook on the school.

Good first audition for this MT season!

dramamom0804… Oh my goodness! I’m so sorry to hear it! Hopefully you will have a snow-free 8 weeks! Heal quickly…

ATLAST, when you were at Elon last year would you say there were more or less than 65 auditioners? Because I think I read somewhere (hopefully on Elon’s website) that they were going to limit the number at each audition to 65. That is still a ton of kids for one day but I was hoping you had a lot more cause D is going to be at this year’s Feb. 7 date but needs to get to another school for an audition the following day and I was hoping to be able to hop into my rental car well before 10pm…at least our last name isn’t in the end (or beginning if they reverse it) of the alphabet so maybe there is hope

Dramamama0804, your screen name is really appropriate now, what drama! Just did a 6 hour drive to an audition today, can’t imagine what would have happened if I was in your situation…hope you heal fast!

We were there last year and I would say right in that ballpark of 65 and it just so happened that most the students were not there because they were auditioning for summer stock. So that group didn’t get to sit in on classes-which shortened our day a little. We got out between 6 or 7 and are in the middle alphabetically.

Cellomom51 Muhlenberg is one of those schools that likes to accept kids who demonstrate interest. If your D thinks she might be interested in attending, she should establish a relationship with her admissions adviser (by email or phone) and do an admissions interview (separate from the theatre department audition). We also kept in touch with Charlie Richter and let him know of my D’s continued interest in the program.

I know it’s early days yet and your D has lots of schools ahead of this to consider, but just wanted to give you a heads up if she loved Muhlenberg.

cellomom51, Sorry, I wish I had taken notes (or at least counted kids) at those auditions. I definitely had plenty of time on my hands to do so! We are also in the middle of the alphabet, but the group D was assigned to was there the latest. Seems like we saw some leaving at around 7-8pm from the other group. I am guessing there were at least 65 kids auditioning. I remember being told that it was one of their heaviest audition days, so if that is the norm, I would expect it to be about the same this year around that date. Not sure how far you plan on driving that night, but we were tired just driving back to our hotel by the end of that day.

cellomom, you read right and it was at Elon’s site about the 65 person limit at each audition which is new for this year.

dramamom0804 - SO sorry about your accident, but if you in fact managed to squeeze a broken leg in between applications and auditions you may well deserve this year’s Master Scheduler award!! Take very good care of yourself, including pampering the parts of you that are not in a cast. :)

dramamom0804…OUCH! So sorry to “hear” this.

Elon - That is one long audition day, the longest I’ve heard so far. This type information is so valuable, to book late check out or stay another day. I know I wouldn’t want to drive for hours after that. My S thinks I will enjoy hanging around people watching. I think I’d rather be watching TV in a comfy room if I have the choice LOL

Feel badly about your broken leg, but this is a funny, but TRUE, comment!!!

It reminds me of my D’s audition year, when one week after her final/8th campus audition, she was in a serious accident and was told it would take six months to fully recover. She got several of her acceptances while in the hospital and was good to go by August when college began. Of course, I wish this terrible experience had never happened, but the scheduling was “convenient” because all her auditions were over and she recovered in time to start college.

Momcares- that truly made my D and I lol!! Thanks for the laugh.

dramamom0804, so sorry to hear about your leg. I wish you a speedy recovery!

Cellomom…we are doing something very similar with Elon on 2/21. After that audition we are driving over to Coastal for an audition on 2/22. We calculated it to be a 4 hour drive-D will just have to sleep if she is tired until we check into a hotel. With so few audition dates available, we have to stack them up this way. Also, D’s school is not being cooperative AT ALL with missing school for auditions. She is only allowed 3 “college visit” days, and then they become unexcused absences. With Unifieds and several Friday trips in Jan/Feb. We are going to have to double up weekends if possible.

Dramamama0804…take care! Hope you feel better.
Kategrizz…I wish I could see you at B-W on the 16th, but it will be my D and her father.
He will probably be the one wandering around looking rather overwhelmed (haha). I will be at all other auditions however!

So when I read HannahsMom’s post last night I almost lost it…I was feeling ok with where we are until I found out you were done!!! And just waiting…

For us: all applications are in to 15 schools, a few transcripts and LOR’s are straggling through the system for Ithaca, Coastal Carolina, and Pace.

We still have to submit all 8 pre-screens (need to record the songs and we will be ready). S got a cold last weekend and had a performance on Sunday, Fall Play rehearsal everyday, voice lessons, etc…you all know the drill. Hopefully we’ll get them done on Sunday.

Anyway, S has his first live audition this Saturday at Montclair! So, really excited for that. Although, I really do wish it was not the first as I really like Montclair the more I read about it. We’ll post how it goes for sure.

@dramamom0804 - sorry about your leg…the worst timing.

frazzled35 - when my daughter auditioned 3 years ago (wow, time flies!), we flew into Myrtle Beach for a pre-audition mini-vaca because we got cheap tickets and it was during her February break. On Thursday, she visited Coastal Carolina and attended a couple theatre classes. By early afternoon, we headed up to Elon where we stayed at the Acorn Inn just off campus. She auditioned there on Friday and we were done by dinnertime-ish. I don’t remember the exact time, but I know we got dinner before we headed back to MB. It is about a 4 hour drive. As it turns out, there were a few others who did the same thing, so we saw a few familiar faces on Saturday. For us, the Elon day seemed much longer because there was so much unstructured waiting, whereas, the Coastal day was more active and engaging day for both kids and parents. After the audition, if it works with your schedule, you can take advantage of comp tickets to see the current Coastal Carolina show. The auditions will be done in plenty of time to get dinner before the show.
BAL and enjoy the process!!!

dramamom0804 - Sorry! Think of it as taking one for the team!!

Son has three academic acceptances, all for audition based schools, but I consider it progress. Son filmed his songs last night for pre-screen with an accompanist. Of course his new mac laptop’s camera wouldn’t work with imovie, though he swears he filmed practice shots multiple times. Luckily the accompanist had his laptop and they were able to use that. I dropped of the zip drives at the accompanist’s home this morning at 6:45 on the way to work. Thank goodness we live in the same town! The accompanist also recorded the music for the auditions that need mp3.

MTMommaJAA - I’ll be eager to hear about your son’s audition experience at Montclair. I think it looks like a fantastic program and son received his invite to schedule his audition today. He will be at the NYC Unifieds. My son is doing the school play, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble…

frazzled35 - My son’s school requires a written request to take multiple days off. This is for a kid who has missed probably two days his entire High School career. The one university in our state that offers any sort of degree in Musical Theatre is holding the audition the Friday before mid-terms. This may seem lika an unfortunate coincidence, but this is a sparsely populated state and literally all public schools follow the same vacation schedule and consequently the mid-term schedule with maybe a day or two difference. The following weekend is NYC Unifieds, flying in Friday night, flying out Sunday night, and the next weekend is Chicago Unifieds.

I don’t know about you all, but I can’t wait until March!
