Class of 2018 (yikes!) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

Going to be 72 degrees here in sunny So Cal…doesn’t feel much like the holidays yet…stay warm everyone!

entertainersmom, we’re also in New England waiting for the snow to start. Bought a tree this morning that my post-college S will put up when he comes home for Christmas, no lights, no cards, no gifts so far…this is looking like the Christmas that wasn’t at our house! But my S has one acceptance under his belt and has passed all prescreens so far so I guess those are his Christmas presents! It’s the thought that counts, right?

Yeah - I think our outside lights are not being finished today after all. Instead - he’s out snowblowing the mountain of snow that’s been fallling all day. (And I think my D is getting her speakers for Unifieds for Christmas - poor child! But I keep thinking - she’ll use them throughout college… and her older sister wants the same thing for when she’s teaching dance at school - so BOOM. I think we’ll be done!)

no Christmas cards this year, no outside lights and the tree is a 20/80 proposition - D and I are too wrapped up in this MT college app process and H really cares but isn’t home often enough to make sure the tree gets put in a stand and decorated. Girlfriend gave us a box of homemade Christmas cookies, check…relatives sent lists of desired presents so 30 minutes online took care of those (LOVE Amazon Prime too!), check and both kids are getting upgrades to iPhone 5s’ for Christmas so we took care of that with a 10 minute stop at the Verizon store, check.

H has my promise not to go postal over application process and all I want for Christmas is an acceptance (or two?!?) for my D!!!

Ho, ho, ho…happy holidays fellow MT CCers!!!

Just got the official word…my D’s EA school deferred her :(

Well deferr is better than a no right?

Defer isn’t a know and I know kids who have gotten rejections (Ithaca) and deferrals (Emerson) from their EA/ED schools. Chin up and keep on auditioning!

*no (10 characters)

Which school deferred you?

I am decorated, not nearly as Griswald as I normally am but I have lights outside and the tree up. The rest of the interior will probably not happen at this point. I have 1/2 the shopping done and that’s it.

I find this process to be draining and we are only 3 auditions in! I guess we are sorta lucky the way I scheduled it he has 2 answers already. Next up is PPU, so glad I don’t have another overnight trip. Then CCM, CCM lets you know within 2 weeks that will be an agonizing wait for S but probably worse on me LOL

In spite of it all we have had many laughs, one total freak out moment and we’ve been able to visit some cool places we would have never seen without this process. This weekends laugh was my dad referring to the auditions as “the try outs” S said “Pap please don’t say that outside this car” LOLOLOL

I’ve been curious: Is it necessary to call schools to see if the application is complete. A few times I’ve thought my app was complete only to get an email about missing items that I didn’t know were requirements. Should I call every school about app completion (I have 14 schools)?

My D applied to 12 schools and 10 of them offer a portal that shows what items have been received and when the application is complete.

MTthewayforme, if your portal doesn’t show which forms have been submitted, there’s nothing wrong with emailing each school and asking. I’d do email rather than calling as that gets the answer in writing so there is no chance of confusion. Just email and say something like you were just following up to make sure all your forms had been received, and the application is complete, and that you’re looking forward to auditioning for them.

I am so happy that I have found this thread! It’s hard to explain to any of my S’s friend’s parents how stressful and challenging it can be to have an MT kid. All they had to do was make sure their kids sent in their apps in on time!

Your posts have made me laugh out loud, and at times consider opening a bottle of wine!

Thanks to all for your honest and supportive posts! Wishing all a Happy New Year!

MTthewayforme - my daughter sent in a lot of her applications at the end of October. Certain schools I know only give one acceptance, not a separate academic acceptance and then artistic acceptance. I hadn’t kept a list of which school does separate vs. one acceptance only so I wasn’t paying strict attention and was concentrating on getting the pre-screens in. The first 4 academic acceptances came in relatively quickly. When I read here on CC that some kids received their academic acceptances for schools my daughter applied to months ago, I knew something was wrong. I called 4 of the schools and they were missing the transcript, the essay, etc., and then either found it right when I was on the phone with them or a few hours later after I called the guidance counselor to send another transcript, etc. So for 4 of her schools, I called to make sure everything was in and stuff wasn’t in. Some schools post right on their website what you’re missing or send you a postcard. If I were you, I’d check every single school and look on the website where your child’s stats are to see what is missing, or I would call the school to see if anything is missing. Then check off on your list that each school received everything and the only thing left to do is audition. You don’t want to find out on CC three months from now that kids are getting artistic acceptances and you’re wondering why your child hasn’t heard from the school. You don’t want to be scrambling three months from now trying to get the guidance counselor to send in a transcript or GPA, etc. or the SAT score never made it to the school while you’re sitting on pins and needles dying to get that letter to find out whether your child got in or not, and when you call the college, they tell you they can’t release the information as to whether or not your child was admitted to the college because they never received the transcript, SAT score, or other document. Make sure the school has everything they need NOW and save yourself the heartache of waiting even longer come April to see if your child was admitted. When I called the schools to make sure everything was in, they were very nice. But first check your child’s on-line status if the school has that, so you don’t needlessly bother the admittance office when it was already posted in your chil’s on-line account.

Bad news, good news today. Son received rejection from Hartt. Didn’t seem to bother him a bit. I would have liked to have an acceptance to take off the pressure. I must admit the first rejection is a bit hard to swallow, even when I am fully aware that rejections will probably out-weigh the acceptances. Luckily, son is moving on so I will too.

The good news is he received academic acceptance and a super nice scholarship from Pace, so if he passes the audition, I know we will be able to afford to send him. I prefer knowing now that a school is financial sure thing instead of his passing the audition and then finding out we cannot pay the cost. Almost all the schools he has applied to are doable for us, but Pace and CMU are the financial reaches in addition to the artistic crapshoot.

It is hard! S has 2 acceptances and 1 reject you would think that would make me breathe easier, it actually has a little. CCM is very important to him and its coming up next month so I just move from stressing over one thing to the next LOL

Congrats on the academic acceptance and scholarship! S is going to try the SAT one more time to increase his score so he moves up another level for academic cash.

Congrats to your S on Pace EntertainersMom! Did you receive the academic acceptance via mail or was it on the student portal? We’re waiting to hear of my D’s admission status and haven’t heard anything.

My daughter got her Pace academic acceptance via regular mail.

DoReMiMom - The portal said “Decision Made” and then a message to be patient, decision was on its way. He received the big envelope yesterday. Two letters were enclosed, first congratulating him on his acceptance, the second letter outlining his academic award. Great news, even though he really only has one foot in the door until the audition decision.

MtMajorCook - Two acceptances and one rejection…Your son is beating the odds!!! Regarding the scholarships, my son’s grades and scores aren’t tippy top, but I look at the scholarships like discount prices at stores (I used to be shopper before this year of money draining!). The schools will still get a nice bundle of money.

I must say the first rejection has made me appreciate the pre-screen system much more. At least he knows there are three schools that have seen what he can do, and have given him an opportunity to show them more.
