Class of 2018 (yikes!) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

enterainersmom-I completely understand the whole “good news, bad news” sentiments. My D has had some early success with academic acceptances and scholarship money, but not as much success artistically: one no, one she’s assuming no but she’ll hear in a couple weeks, and one she feels went very well. Hopefully the last four go well! The good part? Even halfway through the process, I have seen incredible growth in D. She has handled both the good and the bad better than I could have ever hoped, and she’s really starting to refine where she thinks she could fit professionally in the theater world. Everyone’s mantra on this site is “they will end up where they are meant to be,” and I think I’m finally starting to believe it. Good luck to everyone in the next round of auditions!

Thank you entertainersmoms. My D’s Pace portal still says “Complete,” and there’s no mention of Decision Made. Ugh - feeling the stress again. She’s had 2 rejections and 4 academic acceptances and scholarships so far. The 4 acceptances/scholarships are her 4 bottom choices (out of 18). The rejections were in the top 10. Pace is in the top 10. I keep telling her (and myself), “We’re almost there…Just make it to the last audition on Feb. 15, and then we can wait to hear where you’re ‘supposed’ to end up.”

I just tell myself that my son has gone further than I would ever have dreamed a year ago when he told me he wanted to pursue a major in MT. He started voice lessons last January, went to CMU pre-college and applied to 15 schools (three non-auditioned safeties). That he passed his pre-screens was thrilling to me because before then, I had no outside gauge with which measure his talent. He is not a dancer, but eager to learn. Someday I’ll share the attempts of securing dance lessons for the adult beginner in Maine, they exist, but are few and far (miles) between and one studio was right out of a Stephen King novel!
The gift is our time spent together. Knowing that he will be away next year has made this year all the more sweet and the disappointments easier to overcome.

entertainersmom - Good way to think! I’m wondering if your S knows my D. She went to pre-college at CMU this past summer for MT as well.

Hope no one will mind that I’m sharing this on this thread but, my son, the character actor, won the role of Tony in his high school production of West Side Story! I’ve been holding my tongue the last two weeks while he has been singing “Maria” and not his college audition songs, in preparation for the HS auditions this week. Now, back to our regularly scheduled program…

Thanks for the side bar of good news!!! That is awesome - kuddos to your S!!! Obviously he is seen as more than a character actor which will allow him to explore something new!! Way to go!

So…email received from Montclair stating - time to move on to the next step - schedule your audition!!! The thing is…auditioned there in November. ??? Huh?

Raam1012, I’d suggest emailing or calling admissions and ask them. It’s probably just a clerical error, but I’d email to double-check and make sure nothing is missing.

Yes, we did that. I am sure it is just a clerical error - we found it funny.

We’ve gotten a few of those “don’t forget” emails that clearly indicate that the right hand (Admissions) doesn’t know what the left hand (MT Dept./Auditions Scheduling) is doing! Nice to have a laugh in this whole crazy process…as long as it doesn’t indicate a problem with your application.

We’ve seen the same things, and it sure doesn’t help quell that nagging feeling that we’ve forgotten something somewhere.

We had that kind of thing happen last year too. I had to remind myself, the MT department is a very, very small part of the overall admissions process. You just have to accept that.

There are some similar bureaucratic disconnects continuing in my son’s freshman year. For example, orientation included many sessions about course selection, which did not apply at all for the MT majors, who have virtually no options their first year. The MTs would come to the sessions (often as a herd) only to be told they could leave.

Also, the RA is always scheduling mandatory dorm meetings at times when the MTs are not available because of their rehearsals or tech requirements. The MTs just have to explain, but they still get cross notes about how they missed a mandatory meeting AGAIN.

In other words, get used to it!

My D made a very interesting comment about being deferred from her EA school. She said it’s like getting a callback. The schools just needs time to see how everyone fits together. Once they see what they’ve got they will cast it. :)

Son received the same e-mail from Montclair. It said not to repeat the process if you had an audition date. The e-mail gave me momentary heart failure at first until I re-read the entire message.

Bisouu - Your daughter has a very healthy perspective, and probably spot-on!

Haven’t heard from Ithaca yet, and results were supposed to be out today. I have a feeling it’s a no, even if there was a delay in emails. I’m trying to stay positive, but I really thought Ithaca would be a good fit. On the plus side, my adorable audition dress and shoes came in the mail today and they fit perfectly.

Just ordered a new dress for my D today too! Shopping always makes a girl feel better. :)

My S got repeated emails from Shenandoah of similar nature - even though audition had been scheduled since October. Turns out his name hadn’t made it to the “master” list of auditioners. I’m guessing it was because his prescreen was waived (auditioned at SETC last spring) and he didn’t quite fit the process “template”. Talk about heart failure - we’d done everything as early as we could manage. Took a couple emails but all is well in mid-audition-season stress land.

After the rejection my S appreciates the emails from BW, salt meet wound LOL. I have to look to see how to take him off the mailing list.

He’s decided to audition for the summer shows here in Pittsburgh. They are through the CLO organization. He realized he would turn 18 right before the auditions so he’s going to go for it. This summer Legally Blonde, Singing in the Rain, Footloose, Cats and Spamalot will be playing in town. SIGH…sure why not…find 100 other things to audition for because what doesn’t kill your poor mother will make her stronger! I am sure its a long shot given his age and experience but he’s auditioning as a dancer and I give him a ton of credit for going for it. Like he says “all they can do is say no”.

MtMajorCook - “All they can say is no”, now why can’t I think like that? Isn’t it fortunate our kids have the mindset that will take them far in this business?
Son receives e-mail from U of Hartford too, owie!

I agree they definately seem to take it better than we do. He also says “cut” vs “rejected”. I saw a post from him on Facebook where all the kids auditioning were going through results so far. He said “rider…got in”. “BW…got cut”. He must have picked that phrase up from his sports loving family, I like it better lol.
