Class of 2018 (yikes!) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

It’s true, y’all, the financial aid picture is a moving target at this point. The conventional wisdom is no longer reliable (in ANY kind of college education, not just theater/MT, alas), so it’s hard to know how to plan or strategize. Don’t beat yourselves up–and know that we are all pulling for you. <3

MTMajorCook I really thought everyone got merit scholarships especially with as high GO A BUT only certain schools. We’re still waiting on three schools one he really doesn’t want. Then NYU which doesn’t give out anything.g and wait listed at another so I am panicking. I know no financial package has come out but I have heard most times they just offer loans. We really don’t want to work forever. I’m not sleeping well either.

Especially as those “maybe” schools become “the” school.

look on the bright side…at least you have schools to consider :(

We’ve received 2 official FA packages and both list loans as part of aide, its deceiving especially to an excited 18 year. “but mom look its down to $$” …ah “no its not, part that is your loans”. I knew I’d need to pick up a second job but at this point I am not sure what to do. I’m hoping other scholarships come through but that’s a long shot too.

I know you are correct bisouu, its one stressful reality to another in this process.

I’m not sure what the difference is with the MT track as far as money goes, but D got offered $15,000 annual talent award from Baylor (BFA Theater Performance) in addition to a merit award. Maybe the MT plan is so “exclusive” and hard to get into that colleges figure they don’t have to offer as much money because we P’s will probably send our kids there anyway???

I know bisouu. I don’t mean to sound insensitive I’m just worried. I expect some loans but not all and that amount.

@NewYorkSon…not at all!! I am just feeling sorry for myself LOL I wish you all the best and hope that this very stressful time will be over for us all soon  Please vent away and ask questions…it really helps us all. :)

I am sorry bisouu hang in there it’s not over til it’s over

Interesting…the kids on the FB page are not calling their rejections letters rejections… they are calling them redirections… :)

@rbgirl - I was wondering that too, I don’t think its any big deal for the BFA MT programs to let students walk away these days because there are so many in line willing and able to pay the cost.

you are right that was my impression i got from admissions

@bisouu - good for them! They are absolutely right. My D knows her auditions didn’t go well and her chances are slim to none, but she has a big smile on her face and will just go about getting what she wants another way. She’s getting ready for her last HS show and is generally taking the waiting better than I am!

My daughter just waits patiently for the mail. She is not plugged into the Facebook site, nor does she check any portals. However, she is the first one out to grab the mail!

sometimes I think it’s worse on the parents

Ok I suppose I can post these artistic acceptances now, thank God!

Accepted - Pace University Acting for Film/TV/VoiceOver, Temple University BA Theatre MT concentration, Rowan University BA Theatre MT Track, Coastal Carolina BFA Physical Theatre Acting! We are over the moon over here!

Yay sydism!!! So happy for you!!!

Congrats, sydsim!

Congrats sydism!!!

Congrats Sydsim! Its a roller coaster ride. We were up when we got some big envelopes, now were fretting over the cost. We had him audition for a BFA MT at a state school and fortunately was accepted, its financially feasible. S isn’t sure if that program is right for him (natch). We are flying up for a second look though. Private school tuition to sing and dance is hard for me to accept. My heart is with him but my practical side is smacking the side of my head. LOTTO would help!
