Class of 2019 application and acceptance thread!

I think you have to pay the $200 and sign up for orientation to accept admission and even if you do that you can still decline it and get your money back. I was told that by the asst dean of engineering so I think it’s accurate.

The first time mine was being reviewed it only took not even 3 days to be have a decision so since I sent in my first semester grades a few weeks ago I’m really hoping they hurry up with a decision and it doesn’t take until mid april:/ fingers crossed since I check it almost every day already

I cannot believe how long it is taking to hear back from MSU for my son. He has good stats especially for MSU, but yet nothing, 3.9 unweighted, 30 ACT… Ridiculious…submitted his application in December, and nothing yet… Like the admissions office is on a semester break…I hear other kids with less getting in after couple weeks…He has taken 4 AP classes, so basically will have 1 semster of college complete…

Have you checked his Be A Spartan portal? Maybe something is missing. If it’s complete I would absolutely call admissions. He should breeze in based on those stats! If it was submitted in December and still no word I would guarantee either something is missing or something is out of place.

Has anyone gotten any notification on housing yet? I heard from someone in charge of housing that an email should be going out before the end of the month to select a dorm.

.

I think we have to sign housing agreement by March 31st. We will then get an email by mid-April with a time/date to pick the dorm room. Can’t remember where I read that…perhaps in the housing portal?

OK. We signed the agreement a long time ago. I did hear from my neighbor (who happens to work in residential student housing). This is what he emailed to me on March 16:

“We are just getting ready to email all the students by the end of the month or so. It will give instructions on how to “self assign”. Will keep you posted. Let me know if he doesn’t see an email within the next three weeks. (More than likely end of the month).”

Anyway once he gets his email I will post on here but if any of you get one before we do let us all know! Anyone deciding between dorms or areas and need some help? We are here in East Lansing and hubby is faculty at State so our kids are very familiar with the UNiversity. I am an OLD alum as well.

Will let you know when we hear…got the impression that the email will go to the MSU email address so hopefully my son is checking regularly. He seems pretty set on Brody for the “freshman experience”. Any insight , if you have any, on the different dorms within Brody would be great!

Ha! I wonder if our sons are related??? I nag mine every day to check that email LOL. Mine is going into engineering so he will live in Wilson. I’ll ask one of our coaches girls who lived at Brody and see what she says about dorms. I can tell you this much - they have the best cafeteria out of all of the res halls. Like a giant mall food court! It’s just at the far end of campus and in my opinion really removed from the core of campus.

Yeah, Brody caf is amazing but it’s on the far western edge of campus so it’s far from pretty much everything.

does anyone know anything about the academic scholars program and holden hall? Would it be a good decision to do it?

Good thing my son loves to eat! My son is aware of the Brody location but feels it is the best place to meet Freshman based on his visits and research…is that still true?

I applied in late September and got deferred on Oct 31st! :frowning: Although, I was given a PID, which I heard from various people I was “technically in”. All of my materials were accepted in early February (7th semester grades and new ACT). On March 13 my spartan portal said I would receive a decision within two weeks, meaning this Friday (27th). I’m just really nervous and worried. I have a 3.6962 GPA. ACT is a 21, low (retook 3 times, subscores were higher on each test though, around 23/24). I have many many extra curriculars. So my questions are: 1. What do you know about deferred applicants? I feel like since my 7th semester grades were great (All A’s & 1 B) I should be okay. If they were going to deny me, they would have already, right?
2. What are my chances of getting in?
3. Is being assigned a PID really a big deal? Teachers from my school said I should be fine. I heard from my boyfriends sister (former MSU admissions rep) that she has never come across an applicant that was issued a PID and not got accepted.

Thank you in advance.

@fallschurchmom Brody is pretty much all freshmen and some sophomores so it should be easy for your son to meet people, but if he makes an effort it shouldn’t be hard no matter where he lives. It might be easier living in Brody though.

My son will be a freshman in engineering and as part of the CoRE program he will live in Wilson hall which I think is a great location. My only drawback for him is the suite style living with one bathroom. I think he would do better in a community bathroom but it’s not offered in the south neighborhood. I’ve heard Snyder Phillips and Shaw are great locations and great dorms. Likely Shaw might be the most sought after but probably not a lot of underclassmen there. I think in the south neighborhood there a are LOTS of freshman, especially at Case as well which is where my son was deciding between but ultimately opted for Wilson. Great location!

@riarohn Your gpa is very good but ACT a bit low. I have a friend who’s daughter was desperate to get in and was deferred as well. She had nearly a 4.0 in her 7th semester grades but could not get her ACT score up. I’m not sure what it was but it wasn’t higher than yours and was likely lower. They denied her pretty quickly. I don’t think they were looking for grades as much as improved ACT scores. Hopefully your subscores will help and I think at this point no news may be good news? Fingers crossed for you…

@riarohn Have you figured out why some students receive PID numbers before acceptance? Do you know why your
boyfriends sister said that they always got accepted if they did receive a PID before acceptance? Im just curious as to why I have a PID already because I thought that information was disbursed with the PAN number upon acceptance.

Well, MSU was one of my safeties and I got the message saying that I was admitted for Spring 2016 and could possibly still be admitted in the Fall Semester. It’s not such a fun feeling.

GPA: 3.7 UW
ACT: 30 and 32
lots of extracurriculars (big commitment to music) and leadership within, great letters of recommendation, IB diploma candidate

Don’t feel bad my S got deferred with a 30 ACT and 3.9 GPA, and has over 15 college credits already. I cannot believe they are deferring people this late in the game…People need to make decisions by 5/1, to hold spots, setup housing…oh well…it is what it is…I guess they rather have the lower GPA and ACT people…so they can keep their reputation of a party school.
