Class of 2019 Rejections, Denials etc.

Thank you all for the boost. Spent eight hours int eh car today driving for state solo and ensemble. Cam home to the official “no” letters from Ithaca and Pace. Both are a " please call us if you would like to enroll in another major". We also got a " yes" for theater for Miami. She chose not to even audition there so we are not quite sure how that happened. We are now going to watch Dr. Who and eat Doritos.

@4461flmom‌ -.OK,an offer for a program your D didn’t even apply for?!? Seriously? This.process.is.seriously.messed .up. Badly. Oy! :open_mouth: I think your D should just go ahead and accept it, especially if it comes with a generous scholarship. Just play along and see what happens. U got an offer in writing. :-B If they try to take it away, we’re your back-up! :ar! Arghhh!

It is for theater not in the conservatory. $20,000 scholarship. She did post her prescreen. She also got an offer from U of Tampa. They saw her at FTC she didn’t apply at all and got I to their Music Theater program. It really is screwed up. They don’t spend enough time with these kids to know what they are really made of. Ithaca was shocked that my D was Pennywise in Urinetown because that is the part she wanted and that she didn’t just “accept” it because she didn’t get Hope. Just because they look pretty doesn’t mean they can’t play “dirty”. My kid has never turned down an opportunity, has stepped into parts at the last minute, has run lights, done strike, props, you name it all with a smile and a, " sure, what’s next?" How can you discover that in 5 minutes?

For those wondering, NYU’s acceptances will most likely come out after 5:00 New York time on Friday, March 27. In the past, it has always been the last Friday in March after their previous week of spring break( which is this week.) I believe it is all done electronically and sent to emails. They push the ‘big button’ and then go party . . . ('cause it’s ALL regular decision NYU, which is a LOT of students!) As I understand it, Tisch studio assignments follow a bit later. And, for those of you with Steinhardt questions, please pm me. My daughter graduates this May after a wonderful 4 years.

You are all being so strong and it makes me definitely appreciate everything my dad has gone through with me for every single travel audition weekend these past 2 months. I thought there was going to be a way to prepare myself for all of this and stay strong and motivated. And while I still try to be, that didn’t stop me from accidentally crying in ballet class when I got the redirection/rejection email from ball state, a “no” letter from UM the next morning and another “no” from Ithaca that same day I got home, from school. And then a wait list from a dream school I was certain I had a good chance with. It definitely got to me, and I’m thankful for all of you for posting what’s been happening in your lives as well, it brings me comfort to see I’m not alone. It was so hard to go back out every weekend with a smiling new face for the rest of the auditions when I felt like “well what’s the point” after all the no’s. And then a few yeses came. But I’m realIzing now, while all of this waiting will soon be over, there’s a place for everyone of us MT kids and wherever it is will end up being the perfect fit. There’s no reason we should even want to attend a program who didn’t want us first. As hard as that it to grasp for my brain right now… because we spend so much time perfecting our auditions. But it’s still true, each one of us is so talented and unique and a school who knows this right away will be the ones so lucky to have your D or S. We are just lucky to have parents as wonderful as you all, for supporting our dreams during this trying time.

@destiny95‌, that brought tears to my eyes. So sweet!

That is beautiful @destiny95! Yep, I’m crying again…

What a great attitude ,@destiny95!

My son auditioned for 17 programs. He had been accepted into 4. Rockford and Utah for MT and Viterbo and Millikin for acting. He got nos from Pace,Otterbein, Montclair, DePaul, Julliard, UArts. We are still waiting for NYU, CCPA, Emerson, Harry, Point Park, Western Michigan and Syracuse. He had been accepted to Columbia in Chicago. There are 2 more that I can’t recall at the moment. I’m overwhelmed by the process and the wait. He is taking the rejections in stride so far. I struggle with them and find myself worried about his abilities. He just finished 7 sold out shows as the Baker just in Into the Woods and just was cast as Romeo for the spring. I sometimes wonder if the tryout process really gives a real glimpse of what a person can do. His strength is his ability to adapt to direction. When many of the people who run the auditions don’t even speak to you, hire can they really know?. I know I’m rambling. He hasn’t heard from his first choice School and I’m anxious for him. If he doesn’t get into it, despite other acceptances, I think he may choose to take a gap year and work on developing his skills in order to audition again next year. We live in Chicago so the resources are available for him to do this. I sou appreciate reading about others’ experiences and ideas. Thoughts?

@martin247998: God love ya. Let’s step off the panic bridge. My first thought is how affordable are those choices? He can get a heck of a lot of training and start on his Gen Ed credits. My guess is that he may find that he is in the perfect spot. If not, he made new friends, connections, and can audition again next year.

Since you mentioned the value of other’s experiences: my D has only one acceptance: LIU Post. She is still waiting on 5. Thankfully, she is thrilled with this one offer. We live in a small town without a lot of training options so a gap year for her, expense of moving, doesn’t make sense. She got a HUGE scholarship based on test scores, so kind of perfect. Live near NYC. I feel good that she has a couple more offers out there based on how much they asked her to do in the audition, but honestly, I think she will pick LIU Post. For us, geographical location makes Gap year impractical.

D got Point Park waitlist yesterday. Still waiting on four schools. Three acceptances and two denials, along with the waitlist, so far.

Weirdness this morning. I never checked Penn State portal when all the rejections went out cause that audition did not go well AT ALL (don’t really buy into this “you never know” stuff). And I see we have acceptances from Chi Unifieds on the board. Log on this morning in an effort to tie loose ends, and darn if it doesn’t say a decision hasn’t been made. Surely it is a mistake, right? That can’t be a true “Hold”???

@winnieroot‌ - call Shannon in the office and ask what that means. She is super nice and helpful.

Is that in the MT office?

@Martin247998 You are a good parent. Those four acceptances (all fine programs) tell me you can stop worrying about his abilities - he clearly has the talent. I’m just an anonymous person on the internet, but I would say that you should really discuss whether taking a gap year makes sense because there is risk to that. Your S is in an envious position right now - running through this all over again invites a new group of competition, time, and expense. It might not get better and could certainly get worse. Alternatively, he could go through with one of his acceptance schools and transfer with a year of experience under his belt if he felt he was not in the right place. Think of that as an expensive gap year, full of training!

Be comforted in knowing that at the end of it all, talent wins out. If he is talented, he will be noticed, he will work and he WILL be successful. The school doesn’t make the career - the person does.

UGH - son auditioned for 15 some MT some Acting. was knocked out by 3 on the prescreen and had a callback on another ( i understand the reasoning, why spend 5 weekends auditioning 1000 kids in person when you can call back 80 (yes, one school called back only 80 but how are they supposed to see who the kids are by watching a homemade video?)) . in at 2 - marymount manhattan and muhlenberg. had a few reject letters ( i can respect the 900 kids for 15 slots odds don’t always mean a win) and a few that came with redirect letters, including academic scholarship money and a hard sell series of e-mails - as though he didn’t pick the schools only for their BFA. still waiting for DePaul, CMU, Emerson, Purchase, Syracuse and a few others that i cannot remember as I sit here. Through it all, my son has had no stress about it - when I got mad that a letter we know is on the way (but not the contents) wasn’t there over the weekend, he said “dad, they are going to take me, or no take me, and I will know when the letter arrives, no need to stress or worry till then, if i get in, great it is my #1 (tied) choice, if not, life will go on and i will be an actor.” proud of him, but I want the waiting to end already.

@winnieroot‌ – yes. I’m think it is Shannon Ritter. Very helpful when we visited last summer and when we had questions in the fall. Fingers crossed for you! That was a hard rejection for my D, it was the first “no” and we really enjoyed the on campus audition process.

How many people are on this Point Park waitlist? We personally know of several, and it just keep growing by the day.

@daddydorite hate to break it to you but talent is a very small portion of what it takes to book jobs… :frowning:

I think a lot of times when people say “talent,” what they really mean is “hard work, perseverance and dedication.” (But I’m just a kid, what do I know!)
