I’m applying to Bard. but it seems like no one has gotten in from Nepal? bard gives a lot of aid to internationals though.
@Wormrot SAT scores arrive in less than ten days. good luck mate!
@vacillatemuch - Dude, when are you taking the subject tests?
@vacillatemuch I think it’s unwise to take Macalester off the list just because you don’t see any Nepali students there. First off, not every student who gets into US colleges are listed here. In fact, I’d say the number is probably around 50% listed, among the “elite” colleges. A year or so before I was a freshman, there was a Nepali student accepted. S/he declined to attend. And you’re missing a key thing. Macalester has one of the highest fraction of international students within its student body in the US, 12%, with over 90 countries represented. Not only that means they are more accepting (in terms of admissions) of international students (although they may not accept 2-3 people from the same country), it also means that if you do attend Macalester, you will meet people from all over the world, and have a very rich experience.
NB: I did not attend Macalester.
anybody EDing to Williams College?
Some people who won’t get into college this year will probably take another year off; that means they take 2 gap years. Does it negatively affect them? I mean, I know of some people who have taken two years off and who got into really good schools. Is taking 2 years off really as bad as people make it sound?
@Wormrot No. It won’t. Be ready to defend it well though (do something productive in those two years - teaching, traveling, working, etc). I know a bunch of people who took multiple years off, and still did well.
@sixstringsrocker - Ah cool! “Multiple years off” as in more than 2 years? Damn.
Yes. Some people have taken 3 years off too. Things happen. Life’s not a well-defined equation. It’s okay to take time off.
I know of a 21 year old international freshman attending my school right now. So, if you spend it productively, I think it’s possible to do well.
Is anyone applying ED to Brown this year?
@vacillatemuch On what basis are you saying that Bard gives a lot of aid to internationals? Speaking from experience, I don’t think Bard gives substantial financial aid to international students AT ALL. Unless you’re willing and able to annually pay USD 30k at least, that is. Would you consider that ‘a lot of aid’ for an average Nepali? If you’re not paying that much it’d be wise to take Bard off your Common App list. I suggest you look at Bard’s website more carefully or simply email queries to them directly.
“The financial aid budget is limited. The College will only admit a student if there are resources—either personal funds or College grants and loans—adequate to pay for his or her expenses. International students are expected to furnish a significant portion of the cost to attend Bard. The average scholarship for an international applicant was $38,866 for the 2012-13 academic year. Please note: it is Bard’s policy not to offer admission to any international student who is unable to demonstrate sufficient funding.” – http://www.bard.edu/financialaid/international/
my bad @Xenonex
wait, no. according to @IvyForAll, Bard has $7.6m budget to support its 196 international students. go to page 2 of this thread. @Xenonex
Any one applying to Macalester (ED) this year?
@vacillatemuch I did see it. But I am afraid Bard’s financial aid policy for international students totally contradicts the data given by @IvyForAll . Anyway, it is best if you make sure yourself.
@rockz123 I know two people who are (not me).
@Xenonex Thanks for informing!!!
Then there will be many applicants from Nepal, Its getting more exciting:::: :-c
