@matt2024 I was just looking at the total population, didn’t think about comparing the number of NMSF. That’s a good point.
Best of luck to you!
My daughter has a 220 in TN, so we are anxiously waiting to hear the cutoff. She is worried it will go to 221.
One interesting tidbit about TN, the school that had about 6% of the NMSF in the state from 2019 ended up taking the Oct 24 date…
Wondering if that’s a big enough number to put pressure on the selection index for TN, and if so, in what direction?
I wonder if that October 24th test is the reason that scores were sent a week later.
Note that number of NMF Semifinalists is top ~1% of all students who took the PSAT. So I used that as a proxy for student population. In WI that means 33,000 students were eligible and in TN 31,500 students eligible. Hope that clarifies.
Best of luck to you and your daughter.
I can stop holding my breath waiting to hear from our GC, I just spoke to the school secretary and she’s the one that sorts the mail. The mail has already come today and nothing form NMSC so we won’t hear anything from the school until Tuesday at the earliest.
Maryville High School took the test on 10/24.
I’m just curious about this alternate test date of October 24th… I thought all the Juniors had to take the test on the same day across the nation. Were there two different test dates last year? Does that mean there were 2 different tests administered?
There are usually two test dates so if school systems are on fall break, they can take the other date. They are different tests.
There were 3 different dates with diffrent test
Primary: Wednesday, October 16.
Alternate: Wednesday, October 30.
Saturday: October 19.
The CB really screwed up on one of them, I think it was Saturday and made it too easy so if you missed one math question you miss the cut off (at least in TX)
The October 24th test was supposedly much easier with a brutal curve. My DD took the Oct. 10. sitting and my nephew took the Oct. 24th test (different systems).
Two different test dates happen every year. 90% of students take the main test date and about 10% take the alternative test date. To avoid anyone cheating, the tests are not the same.
Normally it’s not an issue, but this year the Oct. 24th PSAT was a flawed test. It was so easy that they had to put a really harsh curve on it to make it comparable.
So if a student missed one math question, they lost 50 points, or 5 points on your Selection Index.
In English, I think it was 40 points, or 4 selection index points.
So missing just one question in each section could knock a student out of NMSF contention. Compass blog has a good write up on this.
I pulled up the dates on my email and in our state it was given on Oct. 10th and Oct. 24th so maybe it is state specific.
opps! the dates I posted are for this coming PSAT not the last one!
@3scoutsmom - no notification letter at our school either. I guess Tuesday at the earliest.
West TN parent here - all of the public schools in West TN took the Oct. 24th test date as did many of the Nashville metro schools. However, Franklin and Williamson Counties (who have lots of NMSFs) took the Oct. 10th date, I believe. DS is waiting patiently to see if his 217 will squeak by, but not overly optimistic that the index will drop 2 points. He missed only 3 questions, and that 1 math question probably messed it up for him. Good luck to all those patiently waiting!!
@Holden100
Most of Williamson County took it on Oct 10th, but Brentwood High took it on Oct 24th, and they had 20 NMSF last year.
So between BHS and Maryville (9 NMSF in 2019), plus how ever many came from the West TN schools, it sounds like the Oct 24th year may have a bigger impact on TN than I would have thought.
DS’s school had 11 last year. But they also had 8 kids score perfect ACT scores, so we’re thinking b/c the test was easier, the index may trend up. But maybe not! Hopefully homeschoolers will start reporting something this weekend.
Thanks for all your responses about the October 24th date. I had no idea there were even two test dates nor thought of the easy test/hard curve dilemma. Yikes!!
Nothing yet? No Info from homeschool parents?
I homeschool and just created this account because I read this forum and have learnt a lot from people posting. I received notification that my student qualified as a semifinalist today. We live in Georgia.
Congratulations @educatormom! That gives me hope that the letters might hit Texas not too long from now.
