Class of 2020 National Merit Discussion

@chucktaylor1 Can you please send me the NY list? Thanks a lot!

So my junior high school son has been preparing with Khan Academy for his PSAT on tomorrow. Any advice on picking between 2 answers on the Reading sections? That is his weak link. He gets it narrowed down to 2 choices and can’t see the differences between the two. I’m just shy of telling him to pick his answer and then record the OTHER answer!! lol

@TXRunningMom , that is the struggle for sure. D also “overthinks” and talks herself out of the correct answer. sometimes feels like she is paddling backwards. I am pulling for your son!!!

The NMSF related college mail seems to be ramping up. DD20 is still not interested in attending any related events. ? I hope those competitive scholarships she is applying to either reject her before it is too late or pick her as a winner.

@chucktaylor1 Will you please send me the NY list? Many thanks.

@BingeWatcher , I’m pulling for your daughter too! Good luck today!! And only two more days till October SATs scores come out!! I nominate you to start a Class of 2021 National Merit Discussion page!! We can wait it out till December together and then hopefully on till September.

Has anyone completed the FSU application through the common app? FSU says you have to self report test scores, but when we preview the common app, it does not show the test score portion. The preview document says “no scores to report”. Is this normal? Does common app block the test score portion for FSU applicants, and if so, how are the scores self-reported?

My daughter did the FSU app. You have to submit the test scores through the SSAR even if you do the common app. (you don’t report the scores on the common app just through the SSAR) https://admissions.fsu.edu/freshman/ssar/

That’s strange. DD completed her SSAR for UF a couple of weeks ago, and there was no place to enter test scores on the SSAR. Hmmm. I guess we will wait to see what to do when FSU emails her back with her login info for the portal.

Does anyone have an idea what the required SAT score will be. My D has 217. Should that be enough?

Does anyone know how UCF pays/reimburses for NM students attending their event? I got the invitation but there’s no mention of “expense paid” TIA!

We received the sunny yellow package yesterday, too. It seems like they”let us attend” but dont pay our way. We are not interested in a huge school so we are not interested.

@amsunshine I’m sorry I said that wrong. I don’t think she had to submit test scores just the classes and maybe grades from her classes. Sorry about spreading misinformation :frowning:

@hopemom I think that 217 will definitely be enough for a confirming score. I have heard that the confirming score will probably be 212 again this year.

@mavian If you need UCF to pay for the visit, reach out to Luke @ UCF right away & he will put you in contact with the right people to make arrangements.

No worries! Actually, dd just accessed her portal this morning, and there is a section within the application checklist containing a link to self report the test scores.

Best of luck – who knows, maybe our dds will end up at FSU together :-). It looks like a great school and my dd actually has a girlfriend who is a freshman there this year.

Luke is the man. I think they paid for airfare and a night’s stay our year.

Congratulations to all and good luck in your decisions! We, too, really liked UCF’s offer a few years ago. Another vote for Luke B.

I was just reading through some of the older discussion here and I see that some High Schools offer prep classes for SAT/ACT/PSAT. Interesting! Our HS gives very little attention to it (which probably explains the lack of NMF).

Question: has anyone here inadvertently scored high on the PSAT by prepping for the ACT (but not looking at PSAT/SAT)? I’m curious as to their potential similarities.

@OceanIsle, my daughter graduated 2017 and was a NMF. She prepped to take the ACT for 3 months prior to October administration her senior year. The next Wednesday was the PSAT. She went from a 30 ACT to a 35 and had a 223 index on her PSAT. She thought the prep beneficial. I hope so. . .we are doing the same thing with our son. He is a little upset, b/c they couldn’t take the test on the 16th b/c of fall break–he takes it 10/30 and the ACT on 10/26. Additionally, their high school (a public Magnet school in Louisiana) has an organized group to prepare for the test. One of their teachers is really committed.
