@twinmommy The odds are very good that your child will be a finalist. Next week, the schools are notified and the following week, the students are notified. My D is hoping she will be able to find out early from her GC next week. Best of luck!
What colleges give full rides for nmf? I saw someone mentioned univ of Texas at Dallas and UCf. Is it too late to apply?
I know UNT and University of Oklahoma offer full rides because we kept getting letters from them.
Texas Tech and I believe ASU is one of them too (can’t remember how it was worded in the letters we got) …
@furmom How do I find out each Corp’s sponsored scholarship amount? My husband’s company is listed in the Corp list but his Human Resource doesn’t know anything about it (amount, renewable, quantity and qualification requirements etc). His company just provides the funding to NMSC but has no control on who qualifies to get their Corp scholarship. My D has 1st choice of school chosen now, but most likely she won’t go to that school after RD decisions come out. So should we change to undecided now and have better chance to get the Corp scholarship from my husband’s company which is good for any college then? Or can we wait till RD decisions come out at end of March then make the undecided change? Will it be too late and miss the Corp scholarship then? Thank you very much!
@twinmommy I know it’s not too late to apply to UCF. Admissions are rolling. However, the Honors College has a deadline in March, so your child would need to be on top of that one.
@ATTX Oklahoma does not offer a full ride in the traditional sense. Room and board are not fully covered. ASU only offers full tuition.
“So should we change to undecided now and have better chance to get the Corp scholarship from my husband’s company which is good for any college then?”
yes.
@twinmommy UTD admission is still open (rolling). The application is pretty simple too. Unfortunately, you cannot use the common app.
@amsunshine. That’s interesting about U of Oklahoma … the last letter they sent to my son said UO will cover everything and encourage him to apply. So I just assumed it is for all NMSC finalists. My bad! Thanks for the info.
@menloparkmom Thank you!
if OU is saying they are a full ride not just full tuition please read the fine print VERY carefully! My DD16 went through OU as National Merit and it’s the “fees” that will really add up, many of her classes had more fees than tution! DS18 is in his fourth semester at UTD and they have cover all fees in addition to tuition and their stipend has covered room and board. We were out of pocket a few $100 the first year but second year he could move into less expensive housing and ditch the food plan and has more than enough in stipends to meet his needs.
Letters off to schools today. We’re not optimistic about hearing anything before the home letters arrive, but maybe.
Anyone whose child goes to UTD do they like the college there?
Our kids go to Plano East so we live literally 3-4 miles from the UTD campus. It is definitely a school on the rise… Lots of new modern buildings and the campus is dotted with cranes building new ones. Each time we go by campus we marvel at how much it’s changing. Its a great technical school (comp sci, engineering etc). Of course we went on a NMSF tour and they really rolled out the red carpet for us. Lots of dedicated resources for NM students. Well worth a visit if you can swing it. Flights to DFW are easy to get and campus is about 30 minutes or so from the airport.
Assuming we’ll have to wait for the student notification too. Found out Semifinalist status from the newspaper before school notified us.
For those discussing OU, OU’s scholarship is very generous but is not full ride. We attended a dinner they hosted for all semifinalist students in the state of OK and they gave us a sheet showing estimated out-of-pocket expenses. Depending on the year, they estimate between $6 - 10,000 out of pocket per year to cover fees, housing, etc. not covered by the scholarship. The range is because it depends on where they live, what meal plan they choose, etc.
I took my daughter to visit UTD and OU. I really liked UTD and what they had to offer, she didn’t like the feel of it or the dorms, and she has friends going to OU. So, I’m ok paying $6 - 10,000 per year to reward her for the work she put into me not having to pay a whole lot more than that.
@twinmommy, my daughter is finishing her 4th year at UTD on the NMF scholarship. It has been a great experience for her. She is graduating with a masters, has had 2 internships and does have a great job waiting for her.
She did use the travel stipend to go to Florence, has traveled through out Europe and has spent time in Central and South America. She has met so many students from other cultures that have inspired her to see the world.
She has been involved in numerous clubs, including leading them. She has done NM tours for UTD, wrote reviews for UTD radio, has played a couple of sports, learned to garden and worked with the bee hives on campus. She has explored many, many interests.
UTD is not your traditional college experience of big sports and big Greek. It does not have a preconceived path but allows or even encourages students to explore and find their passion. That is the experience that my daughter has had at UTD. Great School!
Thanks @GTAustin - what an amazing experience your daughter has had!
@twinmommy here’s my understanding of the schools that provide a full ride for NMF: UTD, TXTech, FL State schools per the state of FL (UCF seems to be a favorite with their focus on NM and UF is an amazing deal since it’s so highly ranked), UNM, and Bama. I know there are exhaustive lists but most schools listed are not a true full ride.
All - feel free to correct me where I’m off.
