Class of 2020 National Merit Discussion

Does anyone know what date the $2500 scholarships come out?

@boogy2020 –corporate notices went out March 11 and one time NMSC 2500 ones go out March 26 according to NMSC

I think we are the only ones that hope my DS doesn’t get the NMSC $2500. I learned this week that if NMSC doesn’t offer you the $2,500 scholarship then UTD will give you a $3,000 scholarship instead. Yes, I know that’s only $62.50 a semester difference but every bit helps!

We feel the same way! $500 is a big difference!

Would they be sending notices if you are NOT getting a scholarship at this point? We have something coming from them in the mail today according to delivery digest and of course with the whole Covid-19 thing I don’t know if we will even be getting mail! I should add that my husband works for a very large national corporation that sponsors about 10 a year. But because there are so many employees, it’s not a given that our son will get one.

…Nevermind, was able to log on his account at it shows the scholarship so it doesn’t matter whether we get the mail or not. It’s important to note that he only had a week from now to accept so if you know you are eligible for a corporate one and are worried about mail delivery you can log on it will be in the portal.

@Jennibc—corporate ones went live online March 11 at 12:01pm. NMSC one time $2500 go out March 26., so those may show online at about the same time that day. You should read the agreement online, as well as in your son’s letter. Press release, at least for corporate, isn’t until April 22. This is all assuming dates are not affected by COVID-19

@furmom sorry, I saw after I posted that we aren’t supposed to say anything. Just read the front that said it had to be accepted within a short period of time and came back to report because I was concerned about people missing deadlines. There is no way to delete my post. The good news is that I didn’t say his name and nobody here knows who I am so technically we didn’t announce it.

@Jennibc —I totally get where you’re coming from because we are all here to help each other. I had a similar issue. I had called NMSC to ask, on March 11, if the date meant mailed or arriving because some of our upcoming travel would be affected by if D had to rely on schools to name here NMS (ie florida) or if she had a corporate sponsor. The kind lady just offered to check my D’s acct since I couldn’t. . Told me my D’s status, but shared no instructions on privacy. I was at work when I called and had coworkers who heard the call. After work, when my D went online and learned details is when we found out. I’m sure it happens all the time whether accidentally or those that just can’t help themselves. I just don’t want to ruin the process for anyone in the future, as some times it truly helps decide some planning to know as soon as possible vs snail mail pace. Sadly, all of our early travel planning didn’t pan out with COVID. I was surprised by the news reporter guidelines, as it’s just taking someone’s word—over which you have no control

Hi all, my D20 got a corporate scholarship and she is freaking out that it might cause her to loose her scholarship from Alabama. How does this work? It does say you can be awarded one national merit scholarship but I am unclear on how Alabama divides up their scholarships.

@WasIDremin She’ll be fine. The big Alabama scholarship is not affected by the corporate one. Alabama will likely just stack it on top theirs. If you don’t want to take my word for it, she can call or email her Alabama admissions rep.

@WasIDremin the way all of my D’s schools have explained it when we asked ahead of time knowing corporate sponsorship was a possibility is that the schools just don’t name her as a school sponsored scholar, and the corporate one takes the place of the school NMSC scholarship part but NOT the extra $$ offering from that school. School ones are 500-2000 per year, so that would come off the total scholarship package and your corporate amount would be plugged in. That is why my girl wanted corporate over 1 time 2500 NMSC or a lower 500/year school one. Worse case, it’s an even trade since most corporate ones are higher value and often give 2000 a year—so even trade if your D’s school sponsored ones were 2000/year

This is just an FYI. My D20 just received a scholarship offer from Cal Poly SLO for $3k per year called the Cal Poly Merit Scholar award. For any who might be interested in SLO – this is their NMF award. It’s renewable for 3 more years, contingent on a gpa of 2.0.

@lkg4answers, Both my kids were offered $3k/year Merit Scholarship from Cal Poly SLO after sending in their NMF letters.

National Merit finalist DD got accepted by Boston University, with some scholarship (~$12000 per year grant) but she didn’t put BU as her first choice by 3/1, which BU requires applicants to get offered $25000 national merit scholarship.
She is still waiting for RD results from other schools (including USC, which is another NMF favoring college)
If she decides to attend BU, can we change the first choice now, and ask BU to consider offering $25000 NM scholarship? How strict is BU’s 3/1 “first choice” deadline for NM scholarship?
