How many people have yet to film their prescreens? I’m filming them later this week but I just want to see if anyone is doing things as late as I am.
Two years ago my daughter didn’t film or submit prescreens until close to Thanksgiving. She was still able to get the audition dates she wanted so all was fine.
My D filmed mid Nov and had no trouble
@GSOMTMom, that’s good to hear! We are 3/4 done with filming and then the editing…I’m just worried about some of these November deadlines…
Anyone applying to Indiana? How soon do they respond to PS?
We’re not filming our pre-screens until November also.
I think the idea of applying/auditioning with a big list becoming more prevalent today even in other majors. My son is a senior in a prep hs, athlete, and his school suggested that they have a list of 20 legitimate schools…broken down by reach, match, safety…and if needed, they could wind it down to 15. Now that Ive been through it with him (he has already verbally committed to his school of choice, thank you jesus…lol) I am going to be much more proactive with my daughter with a more competitive MT major to have a broad list also.
@mtmamma2020 I believe we heard within a week last year. The were also quick with their decision after the audition (also within a week…it was a fall audition date).
Wow, 20 schools seems like a lot! I assist kids every year, and have been doing so for many years now, and have never had kids who had anywhere near that number, for any major. I think if the student compiles an appropriate list that takes into account their academic stats, their financial need and the type of program/school/location they want, there is little need for most applicants to have to apply to 20 schools.
Most of the theater and MT applicants I know are applying to at least 12-15. Think how many they can get rejected from?
I really think numbers of applications have risen over the past decade or so. I will check in with some people at my D’s PA HS and see what I can find out
Standing outside the process with “no skin in the game,” 20 schools seems like a lot. Facing the process last year, 20 schools didn’t seem like too many…
Even though d had a national audition coach, had access to great advice from her PA HS department head and school counselor (with decades of experience with college auditions between them), went through mock auditions with former MT department heads, auditioned in June at the International Thespian Conference, etc., there seemed to be so much variance in the process that casting as wide a net as possible seemed prudent. As things turned out, there was considerable variance between predicted and actual results (based on the input we received from experts before starting the process). Auditioning for a lot of programs gave d some good choices that she might not have had otherwise, so I am a big believer in casting as wide a net as possible.
God, can we just get an emoji added w/ a smiley holding a sign that says, “What @EmsDad said”. It would save a lot of time.
^:)^
@EmsDad As I said, I have worked with two or three students a year for the past several years. So, although it’s not MY skin in the game, it is for the students I volunteer to help. I don’t think that any of them has ever had more than 12 on their list and all have had good options come April 1. Not all families are able to apply to that many and I wouldn’t want prospective applicants to feel that it is necessary, should that number present them with a problem.
@EmsDad, so, if the person many of us on CC consider the Yoda of MT admissions has a 12-school limit for students he knows and for whom he can expertly tier schools, does that mean the rest of us need more? Especially we moms who tend to overestimate our kids’ talent? I am in desperate fear of my son being turned down for all 12 of his submissions and question whether we’ve have applied to enough (or the right kind of) schools. Of course, he has had enough of making pre-screens, filling out apps, and writing essays . . . # cantstandthewaiting
Emsdad makes an excellent point. If There had been an opportunity in say- late February to suddenly apply for a whole bunch more schools- I probably would have had D do so- because I was in full panic mode. She was much more zen about the whole thing- which is probably good since it is her education and all. (She would have resolutely refused btw- she didn’t want to do walking ins at unifieds either b/c she only wanted the schools she wanted) But I think I would have been wrong (and not just because it all worked out) I don’t think there were 10 more programs that would have really been good fits. More isn’t always better, sometimes it’s just “more”.
That was me. Full on panic mode in February. D auditioned at that “just one more” school in mid March and is a very happy first-year (because, you know, you don’t say ‘freshmen’ because it’s sexist 8-| ) there at this very minute.
I think the KaMaMom Debacle of 2014-2015 could’ve been avoided though … but that wouldn’t have been any fun now would it?
@KaMaMom - I thought of you as I typed my earlier post Was Nebraska on your list originally? Our list started out with 20+ schools and a whole group got eliminated for various reasons. What I meant was - if suddenly schools we had eliminated (many great programs, BOCO, Emerson, Indiana etc) had suddenly been “available” for auditions - I would have thought “let’s get more chances for a yes”. And my daughter (the voice of reason) would have been saying “mom- we eliminated those schools for a reason”. She had good options in safeties- (in fact as stated earlier she had too many safeties, but that is beside the point)
I certainly would NOT recommend a BFA with only 1 or 2 schools on their list (btw- I know a kid who did that last year with CCM and a safety, fortunately it worked out) or only lottery schools etc. the key, as SO often mentioned here, is balance
@toowonderful … nope! Nebraska wasn’t even on our radar a year ago. All we knew about Nebraska was Lady Gaga fancied a guy from there and … um, yeah … just the Lady Gaga song.
I was very late to get clued in to exactly WHICH schools were the lottery schools - and I’ve been very open about it. Heck, well over a hundred kids from my D’s graduating class are at Indiana University right now … what do you mean it’s a lottery school??? Yep, that was me.
It’s a hard thing to get your head around really. Lots of the schools that are tossed around here quite freely are equal to Harvard-Yale-Princeton … but it takes a while to pick up on that. And thank God (and LOTS of CC parents!) who were there posting and messaging lots of alternatives.
@KaMaMom- your openness is a gift to the entire CC community - and an inspiration to all moms (and dads) fighting to help their kid take the next step towards their dream
