At the risk of stirring things up further, in response to @shopforpunky 's post - my feeling is that if your child doesn’t think they have a chance – a chance as much as anyone else has a chance in this 3% admissions world – of getting into whatever their concept of a top three for them is, be the CMU/Michigan etc model or another one, they shouldn’t be applying anywhere, because in order to make it, professionally - i.e. be a working performer, they’re going to have to have that level of confidence. of course matched by the talent, week in, week out. Not arrogance, just some degree of confidence.
The only exception I can think of is for people who haven’t taken any/much dance and know that this will hinder them at this juncture and are choosing BFA schools which specifically don’t focus on advanced level dance… Yes, it’s way better if that confidence is partially put there by outside endorsement of it by current, working, theater professionals, and yes, too that confidence has its ebb and flow, but if I didn’t have a kid who most of the time thinks: “well I almost certainly won’t get into (fill in blank of CMU, etc), but you know what? I do think I’m in the mix for it,” I’m not sure I would fully support her decision to go the BFA MT route. I write this being fully aware, as she is, that she could well go 0 for 9 (her current BFA application tally) at the end of it all.
I agree to a point- that is that they have to have confidence in their talent. However, if they know that x only takes high school musical award winners, young arts, etc… and a few VIP’s get their kids in, and last year they already took her “twin”, I guess it’s ok to be realistic.
Yes, It’s a good thing to say, “hey if they chose me I would thrive in the program and be a success because I have what it takes to be trained and be great.” But it’s another to get hyped up and truly believe you have the same chance as the types listed above if that’s what they always take and you are not that.
First time poster, loooong time lurker. I just need to vent as I go through this process with my daughter; and quite frankly I want to be the voice for all those lurkers out there who aren’t passing every prescreen and haven’t been preparing their children for this since they could walk. Anyway, my current frustration is that she was supposed to hear something from Baldwin Wallace today and she has not heard anything. She did not make it into their summer program so we are not particularly hopeful, but I just want to know where she stands. Has anyone heard anything?
We’ve been checking the email all day looking for BW as well @rocsocks. I was sooooo hoping to hear something. Ugh. When someone DOES hear something - please post.
I know the parents at BW were told results would be out today, but my son said the kids were told it would be anywhere from Dec 8 to Dec 12. Relax everyone.
I thought one of the best threads last year was the one about rejections - when you have had bad news (which EVERYONE gets at some point) it helps to know you are not alone
Is BW giving out acceptances in Dec? Is that what you all are referring to? Yikes we know someone who applied but not sure if they already auditioned. Gotta ask her! Also I agree, as someone who is a junior parent I really appreciate all the posts of rejections & acceptances. It might help someone stay sane and know they’re not alone!
As I understand it, BW MIGHT give out a small number of acceptances, release many, and keep some in a holding pattern until all auditions are completed.
@mtmcmt Please, please, please whatever you do…do not be discouraged!! The application and audition season has barely started and there are so many great programs out there. And one of the great things about College Confidential is that there are a lot of people here who can help you find them!!
There are walk-ins at Unifieds and 1/2 the season still left. Plenty of time to add, add, add. Getting a “no” more than once is normal for almost everyone. Please ask if you need more options and don’t give up.
My D is a no at BW too, as is a good friend of my daughter’s who attended Overtures this summer. If misery loves company, we all should have plenty of it. . Onward we go!
@mtmcmt & others: My D’s (and probably many others) “top choice” changed several times over the course of the audition season! She had 2 favorites on paper starting out, but one of them came off her list completely when she auditioned - did not like it at all. The school where she ended up (Wright State) was WAY down the list until she auditioned there and then it jumped to the top. Don’t feel discouraged - I would think a majority of our kids got more no’s than yes’s.
Rooting for all the kids on this journey this year! It is early and you can always keep looking for other programs to apply to. Lord knows I know all the ones no one ever talks about lol
@mtmcmt Is she looking for a conservatory program or one where she is required to take liberal arts classes? My daughter is at BoCo which is a straight up conservatory - she would have hated having to take regular college classes and loves being immersed in acting/vocals/movement/dance. It is definitely something to think hard about!
I have sat back and read all these knowledgeable post for a year now. However, today I started feeling really overwhelmed with this whole process and I broke down and had a good cry alone while I was driving. I decided I needed to find a support system and so you all have become my new MT therapist! Thank you in advance!
My son is a 6 ft. muscular dude who basically played sports up until the end of his sophomore year when he decided to focus more on MT. One of his first musicals was Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat in the 8th grade and he thought he was pretty cool because he was Benjamin and got to steal the golden cup! Seriously though, he has always been a musical kid. He started playing the piano when he was 4 and then eventually added the vocals to go along with that. He has been the keyboardist and vocalist at a Mega Church in Oklahoma since 8th grade but for the past two years has served as the co worship leader for the main service and the youth. He has been in every musical and play at his HS and has taken Voice since 6th grade and dance the past year ( I know it is late! ) He attended Overtures at BW this summer. We hired a coach that many people use but did not have the best experience and decided to say thanks and move on. Fortunately he has incredible coaches in Oklahoma to help him with this grueling process.
He has applied to and been accepted to 12 schools academically. Unfortunately he is very wishy washy about exactly what it is that he wants in a school. At first he was very PRO conservatory and now he is saying he wants a school with more of a college feel. (sports, student activities, etc) Today he received an email that said he had been waitlisted for BW. TBH I think he had mixed feelings… He fell in love with it this summer at Overtures but as we talked about it today. I think he fell in love with the people that attended Overtures this summer, their counselor AND the program. He is at piece with the BW results just a little disappointed!
Onto exciting things… He is planning on auditioning at Ball State, University of Northern Colorado, Coastal Carolina, Belmont, Western Michigan, OCU, Missouri State, Wichita State, Sam Houston State and maybe Memphis. ( I know very diverse group of schools) He has great grades but struggles on the ACT. (The whole time thing STRESSES him out!) That is why some of the more academic schools are OFF the list! Anyway, I thought I would join this therapy group and already feel a little better putting this in writing! Thanks for listening to me ramble!
@okpackers - my D is a BW WL success story - so while your son should put his all into his upcoming auditions - you never know - it could come through - my D got her call in mid-April… after she had narrowed her accepts and all but committed to another program. Congratulations… and best of luck in the remainder of his auditions!
