Class of 2020 (sharing, venting, etc)

Some schools/programs are big with the “woo”. Frankly, I find that a little disingenuous - and mean spirited (since so few will be accepted) but that’s me.

Anyone want to weigh in on the Viterbo audition? Other than getting hit by a van that ran a red light on our way to the audition, which totalled my car, my d loved every minute of the audition. The Viterbo people were wonderful and my d thought the dance call and audition/interview were a blast. I’ll post our audition experience in the audition folder, but I was curious what everyone else thought.

I think @songgirlsmom is at the top of the “wildest audition experience” list for this cycle. Sorry about your car.

@shopforpunky - she is looking mainly at conservatories because of the 24/7 immersion but some bfa’s she is going for have more gen eds, too.

Thanks to everyone for their support!!!

@GSOMTMom…if not the wildest, definitely the most expensive.

Oh gosh @songgirlsmom: so glad you all are ok. And glad your D loved Viterbo!

Did that happen in a movie? Whiplash? Oh my gosh I am so sorry about your car and I hope everyone is allright! Puts things in perspective doesn’t it? FWIW, my D loved the Vitterbo folks at Moonifieds, don’t know about the campus but the program is supposed to be excellent!!

OMG, @songgirlsmom. I am so sorry about your car. I can’t imagine the stress that that accident added to your day. I am so glad that everything went well and that D enjoyed the experience. My D worked the audition and she told me that she thought everyone sang really well! She kept the candidates company while they were waiting outside the audition room. I think Viterbo has changed their notification policy. You should hear something soon. Fingers crossed!

I didn’t get a chance to meet your D, @TNMTDAD, but she introduced herself at the beginning and she’s absolutely darling. My D said all of the students were super nice, and that everyone really seemed to like each other. It really is a wonderful program and lovely campus. My D has her fingers and toes crossed!

Awe. I hope it works out for her, @songgirlsmom. Keep us posted! Where’s the next audition?

Whoa, here’s hoping karma evens out the car crash at Vitterbo with an acceptance, @songgirlsmom!

Next up is Millikin for us. Although after @KaMaMom’s story from last year, I’m pretty nervous about that one.

Well, @songgirlsmom, there is some pretty scathing stuff on CC if you comb through all of the threads about Millikin. Kind of hard to escape so we visited aware of the experiences of many. But, we visited the campus twice, and I will say that our experience on campus: eating with students from the department, attending a show, attending a class, and talking to faculty was very nice. Not just nice. It was impressive. It was really hard to reconcile everything that I had read on CC with what we experienced on campus. We saw “String” while we were there, and we really enjoyed it. The production, the acting, and most of the singing. I did hear some unhealthy singing on stage, which bothered me. But, the acting was some of the best of anywhere that we visited. We stayed at Fairfield Inn in Forsyth, IL. Very nice. Close to shopping and restaurants. About 15 minutes from campus. They give you a decision before you leave so you’ll know either way. Fingers crossed, but I hope she gets good news from Viterbo.

We visited Millikin at the end of May last year. We liked the campus and the person we met in theatre seemed very impressive. But yeah, I’ve seen the negative stuff. D got a significant academic scholarship there, but even with a talent scholarship if she gets in, I’m leery of it’s affordability. My d has a friend from high school who is in the BFA acting program and really loves it there. We haven’t seen a show, but hearing about unhealthy singing is very scary. That’s one of D’s hot button issues. I’m crossing fingers for Viterbo too. If she gets a yes from them, I’m curious to see if she will want to continue her auditions or make a decision based on the acceptances she has.

@songgirlsmom So that’s what happened??!! So sorry to hear, I could tell you had something going on but didn’t want to pry (and you understandably were on the phone most of the time!)
Glad you are both OK!!! I will chime in on Viterbo with more info soon - absolutely wonderful audition experience!

@tnmtdad and @CanadianMTgirl You should both be incredibly proud. Based on your ‘‘screen names’’ and where they said they were from, I’m sure they are your daughters! I spoke with both of them at length and they are amazing, beautiful young women who represented the program with such class. We walked over to the alumni/Christmas event in the fine arts center while the kids were in their dance call. They answered all of my questions, and I really enjoyed their company & hospitality…one of Viterbo’s values I learned!

Awe. I am so glad that y’all had a positive experience! I couldn’t imagine anything less. Viterbo and La Crosse, WI are magical at this time of year. We are heading up next week to pick up D and bring her home for 3 weeks. Can’t wait to see Rotary Lights with my wife because she didn’t get to come last year when D auditioned. And, we will of course have to make are routine stop at the Cheese Chalet on the way. Fingers crossed for you, too @deelight.

To comment on BW, every single kid my D knows that’s a senior applying right now for MT is applying at BW. Literally like every kid. One of the kids commented that that school was not on his radar until Kyle Jean Baptiste passed away and they saw he went there.

@deelight Thank you so much! I’m actually a student, not a parent (I’m one of the CCers who went through this process without a ton of parental support), so I can categorically say that it was so lovely to meet you last weekend! I know I was freaking out that morning, as I was running a little behind and came to work auditions with damp hair from my shower…I kept thinking “What will the parents on CC think of me? I’m a mess!” Hahaha.

Wow! Even more impressive @CanadianMTgirl - good for you!! Not a mess at all. Pleasure to meet you - it was a great visit and audition experience!

Thanks @TNMTDAD! Gotta love Cheese Chalet!!! You should probably smuggle some Spotted Cow across the border too!!
