Class of 2020 (sharing, venting, etc)

@musicalkid98 think there used to be a way of checking your application status for Montclair and reading a code. Doesn’t seem to be there anymore. Last year snail mail letters arrived around 3-4 weeks after audition dates from what I can gather.

I was wondering about Wagner as my D is interested in a BA .,does anyone know if they give generous merit aid & also academically is it a hard admit? I know they prescreens need right?

@theaterwork, Wagner is not a very difficult admit academically. They even offer you the option of not submitting your standardized test score if you would like to be considered for admission based on everything except your ACT or SAT, which I think is pretty cool because some people just don’t test well. I can’t speak to how generous they are regarding aid, but I found that generally speaking, the private schools were very generous. I don’t think there is a prescreen. You are able to record an audition if you live very far away and are unable to attend the on-campus auditions. And, although it is a BA, the curriculum is comparable to many BFA programs. We considered adding a minor in music because it seemed to have less vocal training compared to some of the schools on our list. But, I am sure there is someone on this forum that has more accurate and better information than I.

@mtmomma2020, last year we were told 5% hold, and acceptances went out the week after LA Unifieds.

We’re at the Penn State on campus audition this weekend. At the Q & A this afternoon, they told us they have made a few offers to students who have already auditioned. There are 43 students auditioning tomorrow.

@HappyDancer98 - At today’s Q & A with John Simpkins, he made it sound as if he, along with the entire MT faculty, sat in on all the auditions. So, I’m guessing he was there for your daughter. I hope you get good news soon!!

Ok, this type thing bothers me… Anyone else? D applied to one of the top MT public universities back in October and they have held her academic acceptance on the condition of the bfa acceptance. This doesn’t seem right to me at all and I absolutely know she meets the academic requirements. What if she is denied into MT, but still wants to go there? It makes no sense to me as she would be way back in the housing queue if admitted academically now.

They told us at the info session for NYU that that’s how they do it – if you don’t pass the audition, you don’t get admitted to NYU. There’s no separate academic acceptance, whereby you could attend NYU and major in something else.

Thanks @TNMTDAD for that info on Wagner. My D has always been interested in them & I think she may apply there next year. They’re a bit pricey but what’s new.
@mtgirl225 that’s weird they won’t send academic acceptance, I thought you always usually get that first. Then wait in MT decision .

Thanks @limbo2019 on the CCM info!

That bothers me bc you are essentially paying to apply for 10 slots or you’re out. FSU, in contrast, admitted her with a merit scholarship and she is in the housing queue…regardless of the bfa acceptance.

Many schools do that @mtgirl225, if you aren’t admitted to the program you aren’t admitted to the school. And then many schools admit you regardless, just depends on the school!

I never knew that about no BFA no regular admit! Wow why not?

Many schools are an all in one admissions decision. Then there are some schools that have a bifurcated process whereby the academic admission is separate from the BFA decision. Frankly, I see no problem with either process. My D had schools of both types on her list, but honestly, she chose her schools solely due to finding BFA programs and if she wanted to attend a school without a BFA program, she would have had other schools on her list for that (though she didn’t). She would not have attended any of the BFA schools on her list without an acceptance into the BFA degree program. Further, many of her BFA schools were schools that without the BFA degree program, were on the lower end of her academic ballpark and so if she were to attend a BA school (though she had none on her list), she’d have chosen differently, and especially would pick schools without a BFA program AND pick schools that fit her academic profile better. Many BFA programs are within less selective colleges, but the BFA program is the draw primarily (saying this with regard to strong academic students). My D went to NYU/Tisch. NYU doesn’t have a BA Theater program. Why would someone committed enough to theater/MT to apply to BFA programs, settle for another field entirely when there are a myriad of BA theater programs in numerous universities? At least then they would get to major in theater.

If a student is that committed to a theater degree program, and particularly if a school just offers a BFA and not a BA in that major, I’m not seeing why that school would be such a great option. I think it is FAR better to find safety BA schools based on their own merits and where the student could still study theater or MT and where there is not already a BFA degree program. I wouldn’t use the BFA schools but with a different major as the safety school or fallback option. That’s just my opinion.

I just think that if you are required to apply academically, then you should be given an academic result as well.

^^^I don’t agree. You are applying to the university as a whole but for a particular degree program within it. At any BFA program, you are applying “academically” because hardly any BFA programs involve 100% of coursework just in theater. You are applying to the school in all respects. And even for the major, a school should weigh your academics because it is a college degree program and what kind of student you are, should matter. So, being required to apply academically is part of the package of the whole decision even for the BFA program, or should be. Just being able to sing, dance, and act is not enough, in my view, to succeed in a college degree program.

A few schools will allow you to apply to more than one program simultaneously, but you have to pay separate application fees and jump through the hoops for each program. I believe Michigan is one such school. For instance you could apply for Dance and MT, but you have to submit separate applications/prescreens, pay fees for both and do separate auditions (not on the same days). At least, that’s how it was two years ago. If you are not accepted to CCM MT, you will eventually get notification from the University of Cincinnati that you are still eligible for acceptance to the university - but that acknowledgement comes pretty late in the process.

@theaterwork Wagner was generous with merit aid (3 years ago). They required you to apply and get accepted to the school prior to an audition invite. They auditioned everyone the same weekend, and offered free tickets to the spring musical (our year it was Rent and it was great.) Plus we came out of the theater that evening into a gentle snowfall which charmed our Texas hearts  They have a combo theatre/education major which might appeal to some as well.

CMU does not do a separate academic admit- which is good, b/c they are not holding BFA applicants to the standards of the university. Syracuse is also all or nothing, as is Boston. Frankly I like that better than the “well, we don’t want you for the program you applied to- but we’d still be happy to take your $$ in another dept” approach.

I’m confused…so some schools will send acceptances separate, which is what I assumed everyone did … Like you get your general academic acceptance & THEN you get your MT acceptance…or in the case of maybe a Unifieds walk in you could get a MT acceptance first and then still have to get accepted academically to the school since you never applied.
But I didn’t know that some schools just send the whole thing together or accept you right away from the audition & THEN dilly dally on the academic acceptance… Well what a pain. But yes I think we have a friend in this boat with a school where she hasn’t heard one way or the other yet.

@austinmt that’s good to hear about Wagner. Def keeping them on the list. My D likes the location close to NYC.
