Class of 2020 (sharing, venting, etc)

I have Wright State Sunday Baldwin Wallace next Sunday Montclair state Friday the 4th of March and then Western Michigan March 18th still a long way to go ahhhhhh

@rampions My older D (not MT)'s colleges sent notifications to each of their applicants on a particular date (usually in late March or on April 1). Yes, that is a long wait but we didn’t think about it so much during the winter and only when those dates were approaching. Some of D2’s MT schools also operated this way, such as NYU and CMU, but not all.

There is light at the end of this tunnel you guys. We all will be happy to welcome you to the “other side.” Then, you can fret all over again once your kid is out of college and most performing arts jobs are not long term and so they go through this constantly! That said, I am entering NYC as I type this, to see my D perform tonight. It gets better!!

The dribs and drabs is very similar to the professional world, except that in a lot of cases, you don’t hear at all.

Anyone who has auditioned for Ball State this year, did you choose your song or did the panel choose it? In the audition confirmation email it says to bring two songs, but you will only perform one - I’m wondering who gets to select it

@gmo913 - My D chose her first song at Chicago Unifieds, but when the panel asked her what other songs she had, the accompanist apparently chose her 2nd song (unfortunately it was a song she has decided she really doesn’t like much…but that’s the way it goes!).

On another note, I just updated our spreadsheet of schools to see what we have outstanding, and where she stands w/academic admissions, callbacks, etc., and I’m a little amazed at what she has done/accomplished this year. Only 2 more callbacks left, and then she will wait for final decisions from more schools than I care to think about (mainly b/c of what we have spent on application fees, etc.). We are on the downward slope!!!

I did ball state at unifieds and when they así es me what else I had I immediately said my 2nd favorite, and one I knew in spanish because I am from Mexico and they asked me to sing both

My D auditioned for Ball State in November and she was able to pick her song. Then they asked for another. So I think it is the student’s choice!

I understood your point @soozivt but I would honestly prefer to know D has been cut from consideration as soon as possible. It would allow her to assess where she stands in the process, make adjustments mid-stream, and move on. @claire74 makes a good point about swallowing the bitter pill and coming to terms with the level of competition in this big world.

I’m sure every school finishes an audition day knowing at least a handful of students who didn’t make the cut. Why not let them know within a day or two instead of weeks or months? I understand if they’re unsure about someone. That’s different. Hold that one, release the rest. If only I ran the world …

Looking back on this process three years later I see that I was the one who worried about the wait much more than my daughter. Once she was done with he auditions and apps she knew it was out of her hands and she moved on to enjoying the remainder of her senior year, senior performances and the like. Our kids are so resilient and that is so important for this type of career path they want to follow. I know that it is easier said than done, but sit back and let what happens happen. Know that rejections do not reflect talent and truly your child will flourish (if they put forth the desire to do so) in any program they choose. Put the control back in their hands. They have safeties and other acceptances that can turn into wonderful choices. It’s all about perspective.

@HappyDancer98

This is true! By the time last year, my D hadn’t even auditioned at the school she is current at. (Honestly, I don’t think it was on our radar yet!)

If anyone needs any suggestions for schools that are still auditioning, I’d be happy to help! :))

@KaMaMom any schools you know of that are still accepting apps and auditioning would be great info to share. My daughter is done I think, but many of her friends are still looking at options. All info is appreciated. Thank you! Where does your daughter go?

@bfahopeful

My daughter is at Nebraska Wesleyan and adores it.

Off the top of my head … here are several:

Northern Kentucky
Western Carolina
Viterbo
Western Illinois University
Southern Illinois University
Rockford University
Nebraska Wesleyan

I ended up auditioning for NWU at Chicago Unifieds and it was one of my favorites. I did almost all of my auditions in Chicago so some of my auditions, espically for the popular schools were very in and out. NWU wasn’t in a conference room they were in a hotel suite and they talked with me for a long time to get to know me as a person/artist, talked about the program and I still did my songs/mono. I know most schools have so many applicants they can’t give more than 5-8 minutes per person but I left with a very good impression of NWU. They still have a 12 boy / 12 girl class size so despite not being popular they still fit the mold of other programs.

@ParachuteBoy … awww!! I’m glad to hear that - but I’m not surprised! I really can’t tell you how happy my D is in both the school and the program.

Glad to hear. I really appreciated the $0 application fee to the school along with the whooping $0 audition fee for the theatre department. I’m not sure if they are my number one program yet but if you subscribe to the philosophy of “you’re auditioning the school just as much as they’re auditioning you”. Then they earned points in my book.

At today’s Penn State audition, the kids knew minutes after their songs/monologue portion.

They had each person sit in a chair outside the room. They texted an MFA helper, and she either told the kids they needed to stay for an interview and they were still being considered or they had seen all they needed to see and thanks for coming - meaning you were no longer in the running.

I have to say, I appreciated the knowing right away. Unfortunately, it was a no for my daughter. But the good news is she finally received notification from Penn State that she was accepted to the main campus!!! She thinks her status was on hold until the MT made their decision. I think it was nice to receive that news after getting let down.

The 6 hour drive home wasn’t as hard as I thought it might be, and that is due in large part of my daughter’s outlook. She knew it was a long shot. She thanked me several times for always being there for her. I made her go onto youtube and play Taylor Swift’s video for The Best Day. These are the mommy moments that make me grateful for everything.

Best of luck to all of you and thanks for supporting us!!! You have been so helpful!!

@224kimbo good luck to your D! We share your love for “The Best Day.” It’s a sweet song, perfect for these times.

@224kimbo was there a dance call before this happened or afterward?

@HappyDancer98 - Thank you!!! Good luck to your D as well!!!

@theaterwork - The dance call was before. They took the 40 MT candidates & 2 Dance majors into the same room and taught them a ballet combination. They had to then perform in groups of 3 in front of the MT faculty.

One of the current freshman told my daughter that she completely forgot the steps but kept going with a big smile on her face. She said she was surprised that they wanted to interview her, but she made it!! The kids were all so helpful.

My daughter said it was nice to talk to the other kids who were auditioning. It took her mind off being nervous.

Hope this was helpful!!
