Class of 2020 (sharing, venting, etc)

@KaMaMom, you are so right. That crazy nauseating time with my D is forever frozen in time, where I will remember: nerves, hugs, kisses, tears, laughter, Starbucks and Culver’s, mixed with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. The worst part is the waiting because there isn’t anything else you can do. Praying that everyone will get some good news soon, but do try to enjoy this brief time when those little birds are still in your nest.

@TNMTDAD - Culvers!!! We lived in WI for 3 years (D was actually born there) and I miss it…

@toowonderful … we are blessed (cursed?) w/ Culvers here … Butterburgers & frozen custard!

:x

It’s in Ohio too (though not in Cleveland where I live- there is one in Columbus 2 hrs away) When I was pregnant with D there was a Culvers across the street from our apt complex- and the cravings were strong…

@rampions, I hear you. I am a firm believer in coaches. Yes, kids can navigate through this and do well without a coach. But the coaches are great at helping choose songs and monologues, and at knowing which schools are a good fit and which aren’t…that was invaluable to us. I think my D’s list would have looked very different without MTCA, and I don’t think she would have done as well as she did without them. Coaches can bring out the best your child has to offer. We realized (and lots of people find out the hard way) that people in the business often don’t understand the ins and outs of college auditioning.

As for the Amherst clip/article, it was fascinating but I don’t think MT audition decisions are anything like that. For most of the schools, essays, test scores, and resumes are not very important. They don’t care if your child is poor, has an alcoholic father, or worked through high school. They care how you perform in the room…

I agree there are definitely different tiers of MT schools but no audition program can be called a true safety. D did apply to BFA programs from the different tiers and she did apply to a few BAs where she should be admitted. One of them she truly loves but it could be more than she wants to pay in the end. We shall see. D also used a nationally known audition coach and the advice she’s received has been indispensable. I do agree that there is a difference with academic admits vs artistic admits. With academic admissions, the schools that are a bit less selective tend to care a lot about numbers and less about other things so you can more easily gauge whether you will be admitted. You can more easily build your list. So far I don’t think there has been anything easy about this process. I couldn’t agree more with the advice to “love your safety.”

Oh, Starbucks and Culver’s sure bring a lot of comfort over here. :))

@monkey13 Yeah, they are not completely similar but the fact is it is still someone’s or two or three someone’s biases that reign in the decision room. Once they have to decide between the many talented 'holds" it is anyone’s guess why soprano X got in and soprano Y didn’t. You could remind them of someone they loved, come from a school they admire, do songs they thrill to, etc… Subconscious or not, these are still preferences that the applicant can’t control for. Then there is fitting into the puzzle they are assembling. No control over that.

I would say that if you made the wait list or a priority hold of some kind, you should not feel rejected ( in the true sense of rejected) if you don’t get in. Your waitlist/hold status proves that you would have been great for the program and factors outside of your talents and qualities came into play.

I have seen several lists of MT acceptances to Penn State and Ithaca. Are all of their decisions out?

@ohmtmom I don’t think Ithaca has sent all their decisions because I have yet to hear anything.

Where are these Ithaca and Penn State lists?

Some people have stated they have gotten Ithaca rejections- easy way to find out is if you no longer have access to the Ithaca portal- then it is a no. But seems to be coming in waves from what I have seen.

Where are the Penn State announce, nets coming from? Seems early. I have heard of rejects but only 1 admit.

My S checked his Penn State Portal today: No change…

If a school’s portal changes from musical theatre to “in transition”, we are guessing it’s a no- does that sound about right? Boo.

I just left the Penn state portal – what are we looking for? There is no section for admission decisions

@mtmamma2020 Left side under the picture - it says “Once a decision has been made it will be posted here” at least that’s what ours says! Good luck!

I heard about it and was sent a screenshot. It was through some coaching sites that listed where there kids were getting in…

That’s what I like about the coach my daughter used. They do not post acceptances as they come in. I’m sorry, this is stressful enough already without all that mind candy.
