Going back down to 7 percent for Class of 2021 (freshman who start in 2017). Class of 2020 caught a bit of a break.
Of course the Supreme Court ruling next summer combined with the Texas law referring to that ruling may change it back to Top 10 percent.
Really? If it goes back to top 10%, I would be worried that it would then be impossible for any non-auto-admits to get in. What do you think?
That is what UT says. They will fill the whole class with Top Ten percent kids - the instate portion anyway.
The Supreme Court will be ruling on whether race can be used as a factor in the admissions process. Currently it is used twice by UT- once for all students as a factor in the Personal Achievement Index which is used in conjunction with the Academic Index for placement in your major. For those outside of the top 7/8 percent, the PAI/AI is used to determine admission. The court alone doesn’t force the state to go back to top 10 percent for UT. They just say whether race can be a factor.
The legislature inserted a provision in the law that says if the court overturns the use of race as a factor, then UT has to apply top 10 percent and abandon holistic review for the 25 percent currently admitted under holistic review. The legislature could change that if it wanted to.
The state allows 10 percent of the class for out of state and international applicants, so reverting to top ten percent rule would mean 90 percent of the class would be instate top ten percenters. If that is too many people, then top 9 %.
Wow. That would be a shame.
