Class of 2022 Rice RD Discussion Thread

Does anyone have information about those deferred? How many? How strongly does the AO consider them in the regular round? Thank you.

@Burke1 I wish I had statistics to back it up, but I’ve seen it said a couple times here on CC that Rice doesn’t defer most applicants like MIT and Harvard are known to. I would imagine at most they defer 25% of ED applicants. If you got deferred, Rice definitely likes you and really wants to reconsider you. Best of luck!!

In previous years, I believe the deferral rate was closer to 10%, but I could be wrong. Thank you.

@Burke1 Yes, that’s why I said “at most.” If it has been closer to 10% in previous years, then I don’t see why it would be drastically different now.

@rolen3 ok, that’s great news because I got into UNC which takes a holistic look at applications but Rice is more selective.

Thank you!

Has anyone heard any kind of updates from Rice?

Has anyone heard anything about the number of deferrals this year?

Sorry if this has already been answered, but does anyone know an official (or estimated) decision date yet?

March 23rd

@MaybeHarvard2022 thank you

Thank you!

Did you hear this from an admissions rep?

@Burke1 I was wondering the same thing! I got deferred too, apparently a lot more people got deferred this year than previous years. Would really appreciate if you chanced me back on my other thread.

Also, the new application scoring system seems somewhat scary for me, as my GPA is low, but I explained why it was low in my essays. Just hope the 2 different graders make the connection between the GPA and my essay. Can’t wait till march 23

What do you know about those deferred??

What is the new scoring system? Thanks.

@jimchoo What is the “new application scoring system” that you are referring to in the above post? Surely Rice has always considered grades to be very important.

It’s not a new scoring system, it’s a new method of reading applications. The former Director of Admissions at University of Pennsylvania, Yvonne Romero Da Silva, pioneered this method at Penn and is now at Rice and is the VP of enrollment.

That’s what I meant, new method of reading, which is what scares me. Also Idk anything else, i just know that a lot more people got deferred.
