Class of 2022 (sharing, discussing, application and audition season)

A milestone! D had her first audition and interview today and the happy sound of her voice when she called me afterwards let me know it’s all going to be alright. 10 more to go. But right now I am calm cause I can see that she has taken ownership of the process and her life. A shift has occurred. As difficult as this process is, it is an engagement with her core, her world and her dreams that is profound.

That is awesome, @123Mimi .

Kid1 just got a link to yet another electronic form that needs to be filled out before the audition. The amount of additional forms to fill out and questions to answer is just wearing us down. It feels like hoop after hoop…with finals next week. Can’t they just use the application that was submitted? Can’t they just ask the questions during the interview? Honestly, the fact that stats have to be typed into this form, when the college board sent the stats, and school sent the transcripts, and we have to fill it out manually? Can’t admissions and the theater dept share information?

I was a bit perplexed that you have to fill out every class you’ve taken with grade MANUALLY Rutgers/ Mason Gross applications. I had never experienced it before. I guess the common app and the uploaded transcripts by the counselors was enough  It took me about 45 additional minutes

I generally only lurk on this board, however, I cannot agree more with the manual entering of items!! Hang in there! This has been a grueling process for everyone! Best wishes on many acceptances to all! Great work everyone!

Agreed! And Montclair’s theater department wants hard copies of everything mailed directly to them, even though the regular admissions department already got everything electronically, because “the admissions department doesn’t share anything with us.” What’s THAT about? (We’re sending what they want, but it just seems weird!)

Ridiculous! Just wondering why they would use any other type of application. Maybe they should just reconsider not having a website and mailing applications like the old days

@actorparent Totally agree! The Montclair process is infuriating. What does that say about a school when they cannot communicate between two departments? But I will have to say the ability to go online and see all the green check marks showing that applications are complete is good for my brain. Best wishes to everyone - we are about to be in the thick of it! Keep those kiddos hydrated!

Thank you everyone for your feedback on the resume and including agent. We will leave it off. Seems too risky and like you will talk about that instead of other stuff.

Had the NYU Acting audition yesterday on 1/9. My D did her two monologues for one auditor, with no feedback or re-direction. They seemed fine, but in this case, you really can’t tell. Then a 7-8 minute interview with a lot of questions, some about stuff on resume, her high school (I think it was just to get them relaxed and talking). She said some of the questions were Hard, in that there is no right answer, you just have to pick an answer and go with it. Again, this makes it nearly impossible to tell how it went. But hey, one down, 8 to go for January! Trying to stay healthy at the moment, she is feeling run down.

@FourStars Thanks for the feedback about NYU, we audition early next month. I was hoping that auditors would ask questions that weren’t so ethereal. I’ve ready man post about getting accepted to NYU, one said she thought it was her worst one but she was accepted there but not DePaul (and she thought it was her best). Onward to the next auditions.

It’s one of the mysteries of the world – our kids trying to decipher how they did on an audition! I remember that my daughter felt like her NYU audition was okay but not her best, yet she got accepted! Then there were the ones she thought were great and got rejected and then the ones she came out of miserable and got accepted! And this craziness continues in the real world as she now goes on auditions and has just decided that she is no longer going to try and figure out how it went since she is never right! LOL. BAL to all of you on this crazy path our kids have chosen.

My D had probably her best audition experience that she’s ever had at UNCSA yesterday. Full disclosure-we love that school; their training philosophies; the environment that they have created on that campus. Still-Quin Gordon and the new Dean Scott Zigler exceeded expectations with their awesome info session, and later in the room interaction with my D. She walked out hopeful-but what felt most special about it is that she got something out of the experience, regardless. It’s as if she attended a master class, rather than an audition-having an opportunity to workshop one’s monologues with such talented and engaged individuals. For those parents and students earlier in the process of researching Acting, Directing, and Design and Production programs-do not overlook this gem.

@owensfolks that is amazing! So happy for your D. Sounds like she had such a good day. That is pretty special. Agree that their info session is the best.

700 may not be the final number auditioning yet as they are still accepting applications for a few more days. We have a friend still completing one.

Hi @owensfolks! Thank you for the Feedback and since joining CC and have heard so many great things, we signed up at the last minute and are scheduled to audition in 3 weeks  Hope your daughter gets in

D had her Boston U audition on Friday. The audition began with an info session by McCaela Donovan (assistant director). She was super transparent about the admissions process and the challenges of being admitted to BU. One quite shocking talking point was that she recommended everyone recind their SAT scores if they are under 1250 (BU is now test optional). People were squirming. BU’s academic requirements are high and strict and she doesn’t get to override them if she absolutely loved your audition.
D did not feel her audition was great. She was first to go and McCaela didn’t workshop her monologues. She spent more time talking about people D has worked with. D wished she could have been given some direction. Big learning process and definitely getting her ready for unifieds.
I hope everyone had a safe weekend.

Ugh, @ginaf1102 thank you for that. BU is a school that was not on D’s list last year, but is this year. She is auditioning for them at Chicago Unifieds. Wishing your D broken legs during this sobering process!

@ginaf1102 - Thanks for that info! We’ll give BU a call on Tuesday @-)

@ginaf1102 we too are auditioning at Chicago Unifeds. you never know. I have been reading about students who thought their NYU audition was a mess and DePaul was their best but they were rejected by DP and accepted to NYU… BU is one of my S Maybe Schools. Also interesting is that my friends Son was accepted to BU Last year on the Full Scholarship for Film (and it explained why he was going around the city filming things lol) He never seemed like the Artsy/ film type but he dug into it around college application time. He certainly didn’t have a huge portfolio but he had the grades so you just never know about these kids and BU with what they are hoping for. Good luck with the rest of Auditions

@ginaf1102 Here’s a little more info on BU and standardized testing: tests are not required for applicants to the College of Fine Arts, “However, applicants may choose to submit their scores if they feel they accurately reflect their academic ability.” Test scores are still required for general admission. Some BU scholarships require the tests, others don’t. It’s well explained on the College of Fine Arts Undergraduate Admission page.
