Class of 2022 (sharing, discussing, application and audition season)

@frontrowmama Thank you so very much for your helpful summary. The interview in front of one another sounds unusual. Is each student asked something? Or just the basic, like where are you from etc? And thanks for the heads up about alphabetical order, that won’t be good for us either, S. I wish it was not alpha! Oh well. I have heard they can be intimidating, so it’s good to be aware and just do your thing!

The main discussion point of the interview was to see if the student is open to both the BFA and BA option. They asked for reasons to support the students choice etc. While I was waiting for my son to complete the monologue portion, I could see the kids getting interviewed. I did not listen in but rather noticed that some kids were very brief while others chatted for a while. I think that is just going to be based on the child and how chatty and comfortable they are. And, the dean did mention that his role in the selection process was small in comparison to the auditors. However, he was a nice guy and my son enjoyed talking with him for a bit. Best of luck to your child!! The only other thing my son mentioned was about really focusing on his confidence before going in. He was glad he did that because he felt it helped. He was totally drained after!!

Anyone who auditioned for UMinn/Guthrie today - are Deb Pearson and Joe Price (director of the program) in town? Any comments welcome. Thanks!

@atreuh - don’t have first hand knowledge but Joe Price is usually at the auditions. When my D went it was not Deb, but another woman - can’t recall who- and Joe. BAL

Hi Made it back from UNCSA audition. It went very well ( I think) It’s so interesting that the room that they were holding auditions in is not soundproof at all. Also, looking back at NYU and UNSCA audition today, I’ve noticed that there are a LOT of MT students and not a lot of just drama students. Out of the 90 or so today at NYU, there were only 16 auditioning for the drama program. UNCSA. I heard them say that there were only doing 1 Contemporary and 1 Shakespeare today but when my son finished, the director asked if he could please continue with his additional contemporary. Once again they spoke to him about his training at Berridge in France (so people, if you’re looking for somewhere for your kid to go for the summer, this place must be IT) The Director and the other Auditor really loved all of his monologues and I could hear my son bring back the “I’m not a singer, Whew, glad I got through that part” laugh by everyone. they asked why this school… spoke about his training again and his school. Kept looking at something on their computer and whispering to each other (per my son who glanced at them while doing his monologues) and after about 12 minutes (longer than the 5 it seemed everyone was in and out with)… They said TY and he left.

@actingdreams Re: NYU and so many MT students. It isn’t surprising that so many in their Tisch audition will ask to be considered for MT, and it has been that way for a very long time. Lots of the kids who get into the acting studios have a love for, and experience with, MT. It might even be the majority in some years, and in some studios. Some are willing to be assigned to an acting studio rather than the only MT studio, some are not and may indicate that they are only interested in the MT studio. When my D was a Tischie, I don’t think that anyone in her acting studio (she made the conscious decision not to audition for MT as she had done lots of MT at her arts high school) was lacking MT experience. It’s possible that that isn’t always the case but for the years that she was there, and several years both before and after her, with other students we knew, that was common. It is not unusual for many of the kids in the acting studios to be cast in musicals while there. Also, unless something has changed, all Tisch degrees are BFA in Drama, even those from the MT studio.

Hope unifieds are going well for those of you here in Chicago! We are having a splendid time! Where is the best place to get deep dish pizza near Palmer House? And can we walk there? First time in Chicago - feeling we gotta try some pizza! Thanks!

We haven’t tried it but at some point someone posted about a place called Pizano’s that’s 2 blocks away. I kept it in my notes.

@savedrama4momma Giordano’s is the best chicago style pizza. They have a location about 1/2 a mile from the Palmer House.

@Boilermom @savedrama4momma Giordano’s ?? ohh no… It’s very "tourist like you have to try the others to compare PEQUADS happens to be a favorite of most Chicagoans and so is The Art of the Pizza and GINO’s … here is a link to some of what the Regulars eat  www.10best.com/destinations/illinois/chicago/restaurants/pizza/

@alwaysamom I think those Triple threats are fabulous! My S isn’t a singer or showbiz type of person but I found that he’s so comfortable singing his song through auditions… really surprising and he borrowed it from his MT Classmate at school … It’s actually from the Musical Big Fish, one that I’ve never watched. it got him through Juilliard, UNSCA and Purchase today so he’s hanging it up lol… He is now taking dance for Actors and he absolutely loves it! he is so glad that he gets to take it daily and I hear him practicing in the attic lol. Thanks for explaining the MT thing. I love them

All, the biggest issue with pizza in Chicago (that’s not deep dish) is it’s cut in squares. It’s just plain wrong. I frequent NY style pizza, cut in wedges…sprinkle a little parm cheese to absorb the grease, a little crushed red pepper…

@DoinResearch :)) hahaha I’ve seen the larger pizza’s like that yes! hahah… The art of pizza looks like they are supposed to be

Have to throw my hat in the Pizza wars… Lou Malnati’s all the way

@actingdreams I’ll keep those others in mind to try the next time I’m in Chicago. But since I’m usually there as a tourist I guess it’s ok that I love Giordano’s.

Had Lou Malnati’s on Saturday. GF with a sausage crust. Life changing

@toowonderful LOL I love the Thin from Loui Malnati’s. we have it every Thursday night. Their salads are delicious too! I can’t do the deep dish, it’s too much but the thin is great.

@actingdreams , my daughter’s high school performed Big Fish a couple of years ago. The music has a lot of heart. The audience (and the director and the performers) loved the show; Broadway, not so much. There are a number of excellent songs that the auditors probably don’t hear every day.

@letterhead wow! You know whats ironic? Both of his contemporary monologues are about a son and his father. One is him being disappointed in his dad, the other is him angry/frustrated at his dad. We had No Idea what the play was about but apparently those who worked with them knows Big Fish and they intertwined the lyrics into the pace and sound of his monologues. (Some of the most competitive schools had him do this  )
We had no idea about Big Fish but I plan on watching it

@actingdreams -

My tech son’s favorite play is Big Fish. Sadly (to me) the father IS my husband and that’s why my kids love the show and why I get upset whenever I see it. When he teched in the show in HS is when he decided to do this for a living.

Good luck in your journey with your S. He sounds like a terrific kid, but, then again, all of these kids kids are so amazing and resilient.
