Class of 2022 (sharing, discussing, application and audition season)

@techmom99 aww it has to be an incredibly good show especially if it can reach your emotions. I need to see this show ASAP! even if it’s online. I will hunt this down. “This is how it end” is the song

I honestly think it’s quite lovely I decided to look up the narrative of the play and it made me sad. I understand how you feel completely. We were already too far to learn another song but UGH. Just an extra layer of this Maddening relationship between a father and son. Perhaps when he got into it, he was able to connect emotionally to all three

And Thank You! I hope we all get where we are supposed to be. There are just so many talented kids and they are everywhere! Many parents wouldn’t always allow their kids to chase their creative dreams. I say Kudos to every parent who are riding along with them

I hope when this is all over, we’re all able to share some amazing news

.

OK, got our first rejection letter – from Ithaca. At least it came early.

Hi @bfa2018 do you mind sharing when you auditioned ? I’m sorry Ithaca is a no but I’m sure great things are around the corner

@bfa2018 sorry about the no from Ithaca. It’s amazing how much a no stings. But a yes is equally as uplifting. Best of luck to your kiddo.

Likewise @bfa2018 I’m sorry to hear about Ithaca. It’s hard to get rejections anytime. On parents and kids! Please I’m curious how did you receive the letter?

@actingdreams @ginaf1102 @FourStars – thank you guys for the much-needed moral support! <3 She auditioned on February 3rd, and I think they are still auditioning people, so she must have been a very clear “no.” It was sent by snail mail. Onward and upward!

@bfa2018 could just be “type” and not talent. I imagine most schools are looking for an assortment.

@bfa2018 -

From what i have heard (and I have a theater tech kid, not a performer), most schools are looking for a certain type that they need. For instance, their primo blonde haired, blue eyed ingenue type is graduating and they need to replace her, or they just replaced her last year and don’t need another one yet. I’m inclined to think that such a fast no just means that she isn’t the right “type” for their program with no reflection on talent. BAL at her other choices.

@techmom99 and @bfa2018 this is certainly the case for some schools. They need to ‘round out’ their classes, not just the class of 2022. Using the example of the blonde ingenue, why take in 20 of them? It only serves to disappoint the kids when they all can’t be cast in the productions. If the program already has one or two of them as upperclassmen (who aren’t graduating), there is no need for a third.

It stings for our kids, but sadly there’s nothing we can do about it, but just have faith that someone not only wants them, but ‘needs them’ to round out their cohort.

@techmom99 yes! although my son has grown up attending DePaul’s plays for elementary kids now that he has auditioned for their theatre program, we know that he just isn’t part of their fit. They are very artsy and quirky in the cutest way ever. My son isn’t like that at all and now that I think about it, I can’t imagine him on stage doing the plays that he’s always enjoyed when he was younger and their school would attend them. That fit needs to mesh on both ends. With that being said, I am not feeling like he will be accepted there and would be pleasantly surprised if he is and he is fine with not being admitted

@DoinResearch @techmom99 @DramaQueen219 Indeed. And she knew that going in. It’s quite nice of Ithaca not to leave her hanging until end of March.

The whole process is interesting. S17 worked at today’s audition/interviews for his program. Six students auditioned, although some canceled/rescheduled due to weather. They take about 15 each year for the tech program. It’s second semester and 3 are already gone. I have to ask him how many are graduating from the program this year. My son said that his profs told them that they may never see any of the people they saw today ever again. In his program, the fit and type is in the sub-specialization. S17 wants to do lighting, but there is also costume and scenic design and set design. The school has to balance how many of each type it needs/wants.

It’s a journey!

Well our world just turned upside down and my D and I are confused but very happy. We had settled on HYU in our heads and enjoyed Weekend on the Square and then UNCSA called her at school yesterday. They offered her a spot for the fall. We got the rejection letter from them that encouraged her to re audition next year. It was VERY NICE but I did not know this was a possibility. We haven’t even visited (we will and very soon). She auditioned at Unifieds in Chicago. She was told that they thought she was the right fit for the class in the spot that opened and OUR HEADS ARE SPINNING because things were settled and drivable.

This is the one school she loved (after info session and a long audition) and that we would scrape the money and get on a plane for at this point.

So we are going and soon but ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN in this insane process. Happy but could not sleep a weenk. Second guessing everything.

NYU- not HYU. I wish I had not hit “post”. Did not proof read…

Wow @laylamom thats fantastic! I’m sure its an exciting position to be in and can be a cost effective one as well. North carolina is beautiful can’t wait to hear about her final decision

WOW, @laylamom!!! That is such amazing news!!! And so unexpected, since you weren’t “officially” on a waitlist there - when I read your first sentence, I thought you were going to say that Purchase came through. UNCSA is absolutely wonderful - I am so, so happy for you and your D!!!

@actorparent1 and @actingdreams Thank you so much. I could not sleep and we’re excited but kind of confused. Off kilter to say the least. Unprepared for this possibility and thought we were winding down!!!
