Hi! I’m so excited (and nervous) to be going into my senior year and starting my audition process! Right now I’m in the process of trying to schedule my auditions and deciding whether or not to attend unifieds. So in order to aid my decision, I ask this: is there a higher chance of admission attending on campus auditions instead of unifieds or does where you audition not have an affect on admission? Thanks!
And if anyone knows of any threads dedicated to this please send them my way!
Most people seem to think it makes no difference in terms of admission. The main downside of Unified is that you do a bunch of them at once, so if you get snowed out or the catch the flu etc. it can be a problem. The upside is that they’re all at once, it’s very high energy, you can probably find some walk-ins, and you can cut down on travel costs.
@4llth4tj4zz definitley no difference in outcome at all. Do whatever is easier and cheaper for your family. My D did just about all her auditions at NY Unifieds and in NY the next weekend at a regional. Only two were on campus, Pace and American.
FYI I was at an MTCA event this weekend and they mentioned that Model UN is being held at Palmer House very close to Unifieds and that they blocked off alot of rooms. Sorry I can’t remember the details but there was definitely an issue.
@marg928 I couldn’t add Saturday night to our reservation. They are sold out, at least of executive rooms, for Saturday night.
Model un was there last year too, overlapping the first day of two. It was crowded before model un left, and we did have an issue with them being overbooked on our arrival Saturday. But, it was very entertaining people watching the more reserved model un kids in their professional dress, transition into the more, well, flamboyant musical theatre crowd as our stay progressed.
If I recall, they did have exec level passes available even if you stayed in another floor. Might be something for folks staying in the exec level the rest of the week to ask about, to get access to the lounge and snacks the first day.
So late to the party for 2022. It’s been a crazy start to the semester. But, I wanted to congratulate everyone for boarding the crazy ride that is MT. Just dropped daughter off for junior year at Viterbo. Can’t believe that! Here for anyone looking for information about Viterbo or the journey in general. Let’s make some dreams come true this year!
A friend’s daughter just began her freshman year there for costume design. She is super excited
@TNMTDAD my D is excited to get this journey started! She’s still behind in school and trying to catch up from missing the first two weeks while studying at Stratford. She is fortunate to have wonderful understanding teachers. It will be such a busy fall preparing prescreens, fall musical, workshops and trying to squeeze in auditions. I’m sure she would love advice on prescreens. We will have to start working on those soon. We are so happy to have parents to talk to who have been through this process.
I hope your daughter enjoyed the Stratford program. It is such a wonderful experience for kids and the pros they get to work with aren’t going to be found at most other summer programs. She also got to see some great shows there this season! Another totally unique opportunity!
May I ask where you all are in the process? Now that my daughter is in knee deep on the college applications… yikes! I am so curious about # schools kids are applying to and where you are in the process for the academic applications. Since I don’t know anyone else choosing this major where we live, I am feeling pretty alone and wondering if we are on track! We have pretty much finished the academic apps except my daughter has one more small essay to write for one of the schools that required a second supplementary one. We are trying to figure out how to do prescreens now (looking for accompanist and finalizing monologue & song choices- but haven’t begun to really work on the prescreens much at all). She applied to 15 schools. For some of the schools we were able to begin requesting audition dates- but have only confirmed dates for two of the schools. It is pretty overwhelming- I honestly wished we all lived close and we could have a MT mom weekly support group meeting. Hang in there everyone!
@savedrama4momma you sound like you all are on top of it. We went through it 2 years ago and academic applications went in over several weeks (months?) starting in late August and were all done by end of Oct/early Nov. Same with all artisitc apps - (prescreens, etc). If you can have most in by end of Oct you are probably doing great and can easily get auditions scheduled. A few schools fill very fast (Baldwin Wallace, CMU, etc). 15 schools seems like a good, solid number, as well. A variety of schools (in terms of level of competition, finances, etc) is good to have. A non-audition safety (that is affordable) is also a very good idea. Best of luck to you all this year.
Thanks so much @bfahopeful That is very encouraging! We do have a couple non-audition safeties. I wouldn’t say they are “affordable” but they aren’t outrageous. If anyone has suggestions of non audition safeties with good programs I would love to hear ideas in case we overlooked any! We are primarily focusing on the northeast states. We are open to going a little further away, but are hoping to stick to schools within driving distance (NY, NJ, CT, PA, OH, VA, DE, MD area are the top locations at this point). Thanks!!!
Drew University in Madison New Jersey. My daughter just began her senior year there. She was admitted to her top choice BFA but ended up choosing her safety and couldn’t be happier. She was given amazing merit money.
@savedrama4momma, wow, I think you and your daughter are on the ball! My kid just started common app, selected monologues, and we’re aiming for applications and videos late oct / mid nov, however, with the 25 hours a week in play practice, and working a job about 10 hours a week, I suspect dates will slide. My advice to use the summer months to get ahead didn’t really help. That said, there’s lots of changes in thought about the type of school experience. Went from BFA to BA to possibly a liberal arts school with strong theater program that he could remain undeclared for a period of time. Ability to support himself in the future with student loans seems to be a big concern, its a newly developed sense of financial responsibility. We have decided on a mix of BFA/BA/Undeclared schools, because who knows where things will be in the spring. We’ve selected 80% of schools that are within our budget. It took over a year of list building, and running net price calculators.
Hi! @bfahopeful and others! If I film Pre-Screen on 10/15 and submit shortly thereafter will that be too late for CMU in particular? This is for Straight Acting, I don’t know if MT fills faster or both the same? All thoughts on the schedule welcomed. We are finishing Essay, starting common app, and my D has most monologues identified.
@FourStars since CMU just added a prescreen this year I think it would be hard for anyone to answer that question. Sound early enough to me though!
@FourStars agree with above. I think that is fine. My D scheduled her CMU auditon late Oct I think (maybe first week of Nov) and we got one of the last times for acting on the day she wanted. However, there were no prescreens.
If you pass the prescreen and they send you info to sign up for audition, I can’t see why you wouldn’t get one.
You sound very on top of it! My d wrote her essays and filled put Common App. We plan to spend the upcoming holiday weekend sending in the Common App and doing all the applications for the schools that don’t take Common App, and hopefully requesting audition dates. Most of the schools d is applying to say on their websites that the audition signups will open on Sept 1, so we didn’t rush to get things in earlier. This weekend will be focused on college apps. We’ll be filming her prescreens on Sept. 24.
