I haven't seen a thread started yet for this group. My D is a techie, wants to double major in stage mgmt and sound design. Not easy to do as schools don't offer it as a choice. She has applied to Univ of Minnesota so far and we are finishing up app to DePaul now. Visiting Northwestern next week to check it out.

She wants to stay in Midwest, within 5 hrs of Chicago so that limits her choices. I hope she finds others she wants to apply to but hasn't as of yet. She is torn between the conservatory route like DePaul where she can only do stage mgmt but she will graduate an expert. Or a more general degree like Minn where she can learn a little about everything tech. I don't know much about Northwestern yet...

Not sure I have a lot of vents yet other than I really underestimated the essay writing for the whole process. Just the sheer quantity, especially when doing university app essays and then the arts program essay. Thankfully D has a pretty easy time with the writing and a great teacher who really helps make sure they are practically perfect.

@Theatermom47, if she’s interested in Chicago, you might want to check out CCPA Roosevelt. They don’t have a dedicated stage management track, but all the acting and MT students do 30 hours of tech per term. My son has done ASM for both a main stage and a black box production so far (he’s a sophomore), and feels like he’s getting a good grounding in a variety of tech disciplines. He’s been doing set construction for his work study since freshman fall and now regularly gets outside gigs for carpentry and so on.

We were not familiar with CCPA Roosevelt until a friend recommended it late in my S’s senior year in high school, but it offers very good training and a strong network in Chicago. (It is not very demanding academically, however, which may be an issue if your other choices are NU and Minn. Feel free to PM me if you want more information.

First application sent off last night. I feel like we’re behind schedule. Gonna have to crack the whip on those essays this weekend. Those seem to be the major hold up in getting the preliminary steps done.

I know it’s hard to not stress…my motto “LOVE YOUR SAFETY”… we added my daughter’s safety after Christmas break and even though she got into her #1 choice school after getting off the waiting list she still decided to go to her safety.

Southwest is having a great winter airfare sale right now for those price watching for flights to unifieds/audition cities. Not usually a bit Southwest fan because I like to select my seat, but the free checked bags is great.

I found this poor thread way back on page 5—even behind the similar thread for the class of 2018. Maybe it’s time to breathe new life into it.
Great things are happening: The onslaught of mail (and email) from colleges is slowing down. All auditions are scheduled and trips to NY and LA are booked. Sixteen days to D’s first “real” college audition. Exciting and scary and hopeful and all of those butterfly things.
Is everyone else enjoying what is probably the calm before the storm ?
Congratulations! The scheduling process was the most aggravating part of the process for me. It felt great to know that my labor intensive part was over and the rest was up to my son. It felt like handing off the baton The audition period will be like a whirlwind, the culminating event after everyone’s hard work.
^^ I love how you can take anything in the world, no matter how daunting, and just by adding “palooza”, that thing becomes something fun! Love it! Good luck to the class of 2019 as you head out to audition-palooza!
It’s so calm, I keep feeling I forgot something. I think I will drive my S crazy with all my reminders because now I have nothing to do but countdown for Chicago.
First post here, hello all! I’ve been reading and absorbing info as fast as I can since November. My S decided to pursue this path very late in the game so we have been scrambling to get up to speed. I’m sure I’ve got significantly more gray hair than I had just a few months ago!
I’m still trying to get all the auditions scheduled for Chicago, nearly there. Plane tickets/hotel are arranged (S will go with my husband who is combining this with work travel so some of the airfare and hotel will be covered which is nice). A bit sad that I won’t get to be the one with him since I’ve done all the @#$%! organizational work, but someone has to stay home with the other kid. (Why doesn’t my smile thingy work right?)
^I didn’t get to go to Chicago either. Son and dad had a great bonding experience though they had no idea what it took to make the schedule they followed
@entertainersmom it was very satisfying on my spreadsheet to get each auditions status to “Scheduled” and to it’s appropriate color-code of yellow. I feel lucky I get to do all the trips with D also!
