Class of 2022!

My dd was somewhat put off by the reputation of Martin/Eaton as “rich kids.” But she figured ISU “rich kid” couldn’t possibly be anywhere near her school’s “rich kids” (she has been the poor kid at school most of her life; we’re talking discussions/debates about the color of the new interior of the family’s private jet, just as a small example).

That’s great about your son. I’ve read a couple of your posts, so I know he’s pretty happy there. Dd is hoping for research opportunities, so it’s good to know they’re there if one looks.

Congratulations @Kardinalschnitt. My S selected the UD dorms as his top choices - Martin, Eaton, Friley then Helser. He was recently admitted to the Honors College. He still hasn’t decided, but its great to know he has such a great option in ISU.

@NJEngDad - My son is an OOS materials engineering sophomore, who was also admitted to the Honors College. He turned down Michigan State, Alabama, Arizona, and Arizona State in favor of ISU. He really liked the freshman honors program, in contrast to my engineering sons at Texas A&M (aerospace) and Miami, Ohio (biomedical). His freshman honors research landed him a summer internship here in Arizona, That job in turn looks like it will land him a co-op job next semester in Iowa. PM me if you have any questions.

Hello, I thought I would chime in on this thread. My son was accepted to Iowa State back in June – Electrical Engineering. We visited in July and have sent in our deposit. We really liked the campus. We ranked Friley with A/C first, then Eaton and Martin. We ranked Friley without A/C and Helser at 9 and 10, respectively. Does anyone know if you lose your place in line if you go back in and change the rankings?

My son is probably going to apply to nine schools. Purdue seems to be his first choice, but if he doesn’t get into Purdue, he doesn’t really have a clear front runner for Plan B.

@tonypa are you OOS from PA? My son applied to Purdue too and Virginia Tech. We visited and he loved both. It will be a long wait until he hears. Maybe our boys will end up at school together.

My understanding is that the date you signed the housing contract establishes your priority. You can make changes to your preferences before May 1st , which will not impact your priority.

Hey @NJEngDad, thanks for the info on the housing priority. It’s funny how we end up in similar circles on these boards with total strangers. I’ve crossed @s16s18s21s25, who started this thread, at UTK, UMN, and ISU. These college application/decision days are exciting. I was pretty involved with my d13 and d15, but this is my last rodeo, so I will probably drive my son insane before it is all over.

We’re from Illinois, so that “pa” has a different meaning for me. My son has been accepted to Iowa State, Tennessee, and Minnesota. He has applied to Purdue, Ohio State, Penn State, and Virginia Tech. He will definitely complete his application for UIUC, and I’m 95 percent sure he will complete the Wisconsin-Madison app. We are going to visit Wisconsin on October 27.

@tonypa - I thought that I was done when my last son started at Iowa State last year. Now my oldest son is applying to PhD programs in aerospace engineering. That’s an entirely different process than applying to college, so now I get to drive him crazy all over again. And my middle so is talking about medical school.

Our kids’ shared interest in receiving a top notch engineering education at a large state school binds us. Good luck to all. See you around CC.

Well @Beaudreau you’ll have to let us know how that PhD search goes. My oldest daughter started her PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at UTK this fall, but my involvement in that search was much less than the undergraduate pursuits.

Thanks for answering the question I had about housing priority!

Does anyone know if ISU will superscore for freshman merit scholarships? Dd needed 30 points to get to the next level of scholarship: She gained those 30 pts in CRW but then totally bombed the Math section. With her former M score she meets the criteria for the next level of scholarship. I was told by FA that they look at “the best scores” but do they mean individual scores or best combined?

I don’t believe that they superscore. I would call or email the financial aid office or your daughters admission counselor directly to confirm. Everyone at ISU that we have dealt with has been incredible helpful and straightforward with their answers.

Are you talking about the automatic scholarships (ACE awards)? My son had met with ISU when they visited his school and they told him they superscore for the automatic merit awards, but not for admission. That would have been last fall.

@uwalummom Yes, the ACE awards. Thanks! That’s what I thought.
@NJEngDad Thanks! Yes, I’ve found them super helpful and timely as well. I’m just slightly worried about wearing out my welcome as I’ve already asked a couple of questions.

@Kardinalschnitt, I wouldn’t worry about that. You likely have a long way to go to catch up with our inquiries and they always seem to be pleased to answer.

@NJEngDad Good to know! :slight_smile:

We just did a campus visit on Thursday (also went to UNL on Friday). S18 really liked it, when he had been sort of disinterested in whole college process up until then. It was kind of chilly that day (snow flurries Friday morning!!) but it looks like he is almost ready to commit! We ended our very long day by watching the swans run off the geese–I had no idea how vicious the swans are. I really liked our session with the advisor–really knowledgeable and helpful.

I am thoroughly confused. My son applied to CS at Purdue a week before 11/1 deadline. How are some students getting admissions already? or even before the deadline?

Thanks

RK

Sorry, if I added to confusion. This is an ISU thread and my son was accepted there. He also applied to Purdue and since some the posters here have also applied or have children at Purdue, I was asking for comparisons. Purdue eraly action decisions come out on January 15th (they used to be rolling, but no more).

While I am here, has anyone goten notice about the ISU Engineering Scholarship? My son applied in early October and they said that scholarships were awarded monthly in batches.

My son got his notification almost within a week of his acceptance. That was back in October.
