My son got the letter that because of his major they needed more time, asked for mid year transcripts and the portal gave him the opportunity to choose different 1st and 2nd choice of majors. Has this happened to anyone else? Have you gotten accepted after the major was changed? Thanks!!
We got that letter too. On dec 14. Said they need more time due to number of applicants and competitiveness of major (business undeclared). Didnāt ask for mid year grades though. Said we would know no later than early April. Her twin was accepted before holidays (exercise science) with decent merit. I hope we hear way earlier than early April but I am doubtful.
i applied 11/17 and still havent heard backā¦
1320 SAT
4.0 weighted GPA
6 AP
11 Honors
a ton of ECās including cross country, winter track, and varsity lacrosse all 4 years of high school and a lot of outside community service
and i think a pretty strong essay
i never got an email saying they need more time or they want to see my mid year transcript and i applied as a nursing major has this happened to anyone else?
also im OOS (ny)
@grzzly426 My D had the application and all support materials in on 10/23, received the āall completeā email on 11/22 and heard back on 12/20. She is also OOS for nursing. You seem competitive based on your stats. Dumb question, but have you checked the status on the Blue Hen portal? What date did they send an e-mail that your application was complete? That is usually the indicator that your application is in the queue for the admissions committee.
i got the confirmation email on 12/6. im just confused because i havent heard anything at all it just seems kinda odd to me i keep checking my portal to see if anything changes and its been the same since everything was submitted.
@grzzly426 I would be surprised if you didnāt get in. You might want to email your admissions rep for an update. The worst they will do is to tell you to keep checking the portal.
Received the financial aid packet today. Was happy to see merit was offered, but disappointed in the amount. It was $3000 per year. Unfortunately, this makes Delaware about 5-10K more expensive per year than all of the other schools that thus far said yes and offered merit (and are of the same caliber or better in terms of stats). At some point I will reach out to UD to see if more is possible, just in case, since DD - and us as parents - really liked the school, but my gut tells me itās going to be a no go. Canāt really justify an extra 40K in cost for an equivalent education.
@HankCT Was the merit award and financial aid package in line with net price calculator? We were surprised to the upside by UDel with a 17k Trustee Scholarship, 3K grant and honors acceptance. The NPC implied a 12k scholarship and 5k grant. UDel is Dās top choice with a visit planned in 2 weeks. On the other hand, we were really disappointed in Pitt that offered no merit and a 7500 grant, making it about 14k more a year than UDel. We hoped for more from Pitt, but the results were in line with the NPC. D just didnāt have the 1480 SAT and near perfect GPA that Pitt requires for merit. That was not transparent to us before we applied, but only after the results came in. D could have saved lots of time by not writing extra essays for Pitt.
@jdcollegedad DD had 1300 SAT, and 3.5 GPA, all honors/AP/ECE. Very good HS. The net price calculator for UD estimated about exactly what she received, so no surprise there. I think this could be one of those cases where they just go by the numbers. Other schools, who are closer to our area, and know the pedigree of the students at her HS, offered her a lot more than their basic net price calculator estimates. My guess is that UD understandably just āfollowed the numbersā. In either case, I politely reached out and let them know UD is a top choice, but they would have to be competitive with the other equally rated schools that all came in a a much lower net price. So in that sense itās in their hands.
Stats are definitely a driver of merit at many large publics, with some discretion around the edges. My Dās school feeds 5-10 students a year to UDel. Good luck on the appeal.
We were expecting the $17,000 because thatās the number their calculator gave us. Neglected that option with Villanova, $67,000 with no scholarship. At least finances makes decisions easier.
So my daughter has narrowed down her choices to UW Madison, Boston University, and University of Delaware. We are from the midwest. Madison is a fantastic school but likely not affordable. She wonāt hear back from BU until early April and even if she gets in, we are worried about the cost. She has ruled out the other midwest schools she was accepted at for various reasons. UD has by far given her the most money and we feel like it has a nice reputation as a good engineering school, but Delaware is like a foreign land to us, lol. We want to come out for a visit and it looks like we have to fly into Philly. Any of you east coasters have suggestions for neat things to see between Philly and Newark? Or any cool things to show her in Newark? If sheās going to consider making that trek back and forth I want her to feel comfortable. The pictures of this part of the country look beautiful. Iām excited to see it.
@sunnryz NJ resident and parent of a UD 2020 computer engineering student (and prospective UD 2023) here. You can easily fill 2-3 days in the northern DE/ SE PA area. Longwood Gardens (fantastic gardens and an amazing conservatory), Hagley (early duPonts), Nemours and Winterthur (later duPonts), Delaware Art Museum. There are hiking trails in White Clay Creek Park just north of campus and of course you must stroll Main St. You could head down to the beach and see the bay or ocean (depends how far you want to go). In Philly, I highly recommend visiting Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Iāve been there several times but it never fails to impress what our forefathers did in establishing this country. Feel free to PM me if you have questions.
Any music majors heard anything yet?
@Britmom5 Not about the major. Academically accepted, just waiting for the audition resultā¦
Anyone received merit notification lately? Daughter accepted on Jan 11 and still waiting for word on merit.
@AMariaDas We received a merit letter about a week or so ago. I would recommend seeing what the net price calculator says on their site. The amount that it predicted ($3,000 per year) was exactly what we were offered. When I wrote in a courteously asked if more merit aid were possible to make UDel competitive with all of the other schools accepting, they curtly wrote back saying they follow the net price calculator fairly rigidly. What does the NPC say you will get in merit aid?
Didnāt do the net price calculator because not expecting any need based aid, but per the OOS merit guidelines on the web, daughter should receive a trustee or Presidential level award.
The demand to go to UDel must be off the charts.
I was reading their guidelines: āStudents will have very competitive academic credentials of around 1500 combined SAT or ACT Composite Score of 33 and 4.0 grade-point average.ā. This is for a mere $5k per year merit award, which from my experience is a very very small award for extremely rigorous requirements (Ivy League SAT scores and a straight A gpa). With 75% of Delawareās student body having an SAT under 1290, this seems pretty stingy.
@HankCT Iām not disputing your source, but thatās not our experience. My UD2020 Honors student received the standard for his year - $10k, as did his HS classmate. He had a 1560(2290) and an A average. That number seems to go up about $1k per year, but can be more because my younger one has same stats and was offered $17k this year.
