Class of 2023 Admissions Decisions / Discussion - University of Delaware

Any in-state Delaware residents still waiting? Submitted mid-term grades in January and haven’t heard back yet.

@sunnryz Every week I get an email from UD with news around campus and there have been a couple articles about the skating program. What an awesome thing for your daughter to have. My older son goes to open skating occasionally - I’m so jealous! I wish my college had a skating rink.

I really never expected my first to end up at UD. He only looked at it because a friend was there in honors and suggested my son check it out. Enjoy your visit!

I don’t know how generous BU is with aid. This was four years ago, but my son’s girlfriend wanted to go to BU. They didn’t give her much $$ at all and NYU apparently gave her big money cause that’s where she enrolled.

@Sparcky Yes! Delaware has a huge skating team and their synchronized skaters (which is what my daughter is) just took first place at the eastern championships. They are very, very good. The coach is even giving her a private tryout when we tour in March because we cant really afford to fly out twice. BU also has a skating team, but the price tag on that school will probably eliminate it. While I don’t want my daughter to choose a college based on a skating program, I know from the past 10 years that skating is a HUGE outlet for her stress and it helps her manage her time. With a tough major like biomedical engineering, I think she could use that kind of an outlet and it would help her make friends and not stay locked up studying in the library! I think if she could feel comfortable with the massive distance from home, she will choose UD. The more I read about it and research it, the more I like it. The only sticking point is the distance and ease of travel.

@sunnryz Yes, that win was one of the articles I read.

And engineering + activity is totally doable! Not pushing UD, has to be the right choice. But my son is a CompE major with a double minor, is very active in several clubs and he has a 3.9+ GPA. He works hard, plays hard and is enjoying all of it. Best of luck with the decision.

If I got an update saying due to the competitiveness of my major they haven’t finalized their decision and they’ll get back to me in April, does that mean I’m waitlisted?

@seashell123456 I think you aren’t officially waitlisted until you are offered and accept a place on the waitlist. However, you should be giving a lot of consideration to your other schools. They may be a better fit.

@seashell123456

What it probably does mean for sure is that there will not be any merit coming. We had a deferral with another school (not UDel), and although my DD’s stats were in the zone with other kids who got significant merit, when she was accepted after the deferral, not a penny of merit was offered.

Now, if UD is your in-state school, it’s worth waiting since that in-state cost is probably very competitive. If it’s an OOS school for you, as @Sparcky mentioned, it probably makes sense to look hard at your other options if they have a net cost that is less than UDel full cost.

SAT: 1450
GPA: 3.5
Rank: no class rankings
Extra: 4 year crew team 3 years varsity in a leadership position. 4 years work experience. 1 internship. 60+ hours of service.
State Residency: New Jersey
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Applied as a Finance major regular decision, got a letter back 3 days ago saying “On behalf of the Admissions Committee, thank you for your interest in the University of Delaware. Due to the high volume of qualified applicants and the competitive nature of the major you have selected, we have not yet finalized our decision with regard to your candidacy.”
Does this mean I got waitlisted? Or does it mean they have too many apps? They didn’t really say anything about what it actually meant. Either way I’m a little surprised I thought UDel was a safety school ha.

Applied date: 1/14/19
Decision date: 2/22/19

@Finnagetlit UD isn’t a safety for OOS. It’s actually fairly competitive, especially for honors. Also, you waited to the last minute to apply and they accept on rolling admissions. See above earlier question on waitlist. Do not hold your breath, don’t expect any money, and keep your options open.

Has anyone placed a merit appeal?

@bes1227 We have not as of yet, although we may. UDel awarded us $3K as out of state. This left the net cost for us around $44-45K per year. Our other options have come in at 36, 40, 41 (and if UCONN says yes that would be 28). I emailed back to UDel about the merit asking if more were possible, and they didn’t offer much of a response other than “we are true to our NPC calculator, please file an appeal if you feel … blah blah”. So we may. Really like the school. Not sure if an appeal is realistic, and if another 3-5K per year would be remotely possible. This is our first rodeo.

Just got back from the Decision Day event at UDel. I thought the students sharing their experiences (11am) and the major specific program (1:00 pm engineering) was good. Advice - no need to be there at 8 am if you have already been on the tour of campus. We got there at 9:15 and were fine.

I second @kwajmama statement about not needing to be there at 8.

We didn’t receive any info about the event until the day before. We went down the night before and were able to register at the admissions office, which took about a minute and I imagine saved a lot of time over the morning registration. And we didn’t receive anything about the honors session until my son got a text 20 minutes before it started, so we had to juggle our day. (There was supposedly an email the day before but he didn’t receive it.) Because my older son attends UD, I did this event in 2016 and it was much better run, IMO. We weren’t down to the last minute getting all the info.

So my younger already knows a lot about the university. It’s on the large side for what he wants and they are aggressively growing the size of the school. He decided by lunchtime that UD is not his school. I will only have one Blue Hen, and now #2 has narrowed the field to his last two choices.

Best wishes to all future Blue Hens!!

We also attended the admitted student day event. We registered the night before as we took a quick drive around campus. This affforded us to wake up a bit later, and to go straight to the Opening event. We are sure glad we did not miss out on the Health Sciences and agriculture presentation. They really took their time explaining about Pre-vet and animal sciences. My daughter had UDEL as her top 3 schools, but Decided on attending UDEL after meeting with professors and Pre vet students. So, UDEL it is!!!

Quick question, has anyone who has been accepted after the new year received anything about merit awards yet?

@Splaks DD was admitted on 1/11 and received merit info a few weeks ago.

My son has been accepted into honors since 12/21 and has not yet received any merit. We’ve called the school a few times and they keep changing the date that it’ll come. It’s very annoying because this is his clear first choice and he will not be able to go without a scholarship. He has 1490 and 4.1

My son was admitted in early February and received his merit letter last week. It’s exactly how much the Net Price Calculator said he’d be eligible to receive based on his grades and test scores.

Does the financial package come via snail mail or email/portal? I was accepted in late January and still haven’t recieved it, despite being told about 4 weeks ago that it would arrive within a few weeks…

@emilynels A financial aid link will appear on blue hen portal.
