We just returned from attending an admitted student day and honors college presentation at UDel. It was my daughter’s second time on campus and it sealed the deal for her… She is going to be a Blue Hen next year! We both left feeling that UDel really offers the perfect combination of strong academics, a beautiful campus, and a nice downtown area. I felt like the university also came across as very well organized and supportive of their students.
If considering the honors college, I would recommend visiting on a day that they are presenting. Hearing from some of the faculty and students involved in the college provided a nice picture of what the program entails both in and out of the classroom. We liked that it has extracurricular and residential components, in addition to the academic requirements. Seems to be a nice little community within the university.
@JoelEmbiid21 we are in the exact same boat. Accepted 12/20. Stats more than qualify for merit aid according to NPC. Have called several times - was told there is money, it’s good and we’ll be happy, and we should have it by the “end of the week” – been hearing that since the end of January and still nothing. Last time, was finally told something different – it’s being reviewed and finalized and we should hear by mid-March. So we wait some more…at any rate, it’s good to know we aren’t the only ones!
I called today and spoke to someone in student financial aid services for my one daughter who was admitted back in December. Just had a general question. She had received her financial statement a couple weeks after she was admitted. The person I talked to sounded miserable. She was somewhat helpful. Anyway, her twin was just accepted this past Friday (3/1) and the person I spoke to said should be by mid March to receive her financial statement. We’ll see.
@Candlewoodgal Did you do the weekend Decision Day or a weekday for admitted students? Was there a separate Honors Program presentation that you found out about ahead of time? My DD is signed up for the Saturday April 13 Decision day and we are unsure whether or not to attend a separate day. I think I recall my son who was accepted in 2017 had a separate Honors Day. I called admissions yesterday to inquire about this and also a Lerner Business School tour and the guy I spoke to didn’t seem like he knew many details. We are just over the border in PA so it’s not a huge trip but we don’t want to go multiple times if we don’t have to, especially if my daughter has to miss school (already behind in AP classes with the snow days! ) . Thanks for any input anyone can provide.
@opallady…We did a weekday tour for admitted students. There was a separate honors college presentation which my daughter did register for ahead of time through her student portal. The dates for that are listed on the honors college page, not on the admissions page. https://sites.udel.edu/honors/.
It appears to me that the weekend Decision Day is a larger event than the admitted student visit. However, it is not possible to attend an honors college presentation over the weekend. We found the weekday visit to be enjoyable and adequate, but I really don’t know if we would’ve enjoyed the Decision Day even more? The weekday visit consisted of a presentation given by an admissions officer followed by a campus tour. The students giving the tour answered everyone’s questions very well and we got to see the inside of a current student dorm room, as well as several other buildings on campus. If you do you live close by, it may be worthwhile to go twice. Just understand that the honors college presentation is only an hour long, from 12 to 1 PM. Afterwards, everyone gets a lunch voucher and the students get a free honors college T-shirt.
Also, the College of Health Science, Which my daughter was admitted to, was not offering official tours during the weekday visit. Someone else in our group did mention that they were going to tour the College of Engineering later in the day, so maybe it is possible to make those arrangements during the week if you call the department ahead of time?
Thank you!!! And there it all is on her portal… haha. I think we will do that in addition to Decision Day because like you said, it may not cover the Honors Program in depth.
@opallady… we attended the Decision day on March 2nd. We registered in advance, and a few days before the event, received an e-mail that invited us to a separate honors brief and tour of the honors dorm. We attended this session instead of one of the scheduled morning breakout sessions. Also received an invite to a session for women accepted into the engineering program that look place after the last scheduled event.
Just to point out that there is a schedule for individual department sessions and tours (e.g. nursing) on the website. As mentioned above, we did a regular weekday admitted students visit that consisted of a general info session, a tour, the honors info session and lunch with the honors program. Unfortunately, we went on President’s Day and ended up on a tour with about 70 people. It was really impersonal, and we left without a good feeling for or about the college. My D is going back on Friday for a nursing info session/tour and will spend time with her cousin who is a freshman and a family friend who is a junior nursing major. Luckily, she didn’t write off UDel altogether after the first visit. If you go on a regular visit, my advice would be to coordinate with the department to get program-specific information and program time in to just wander the campus and spend time in the library, student center, dining hall, academic building for your program, etc. If you go on a decision day, I suspect that it will include general info/tour, major-specific info/tour, honors info, lunch in a dining hall, etc.
@jdcollegedad@opallady We were at the March 2 decision day and the honors session was about 45 minutes with a short video presentation, a couple students who talked about their UD experience, and an open Q&A. Plus the opportunity to tour Redding if you haven’t already been there. Honestly, as a mom of a junior honor student, I felt I could have answered some questions more in-depth. If you have anything I can help answer regarding honors, feel free to tag me or PM me.
@ashantiAG I don’t remember for sure what they said last week but there is no preference given based on date of deposit so you don’t have to worry about getting in there first.
SAT:1170

Just spoke to my niece who used to go their, she didn’t like the travel from dorms to classes. She said it took up to 20 mins and she had to take a shuttle. Is that true
@HSinLI - If you are living on North Campus, in George Read for example, it could take 15 minutes to walk to your classes. Dorms on other parts of campus are an easy <10 minute walk to class. They offer a shuttle bus or you can ride a bike if you don’t want to walk.
My daughter just got admitted on friday (after a deferment). She now just got an invitation to apply to the World Scholars program. Does everyone get invited to apply to that program?
@rido6138 No - not everyone. We were just there for Distinguished Scholars weekend and I had the pleasure of talking at length with the woman that started the program. It sounds absolutely amazing. They are interviewing through the end of the month. Won’t work for all majors - for example engineering majors are excluded.
How likely is it to get in after a deferment? Applied 11/1, deferred 1/11, with a SAT score of 1250 with all APs, Honors, and with varied fluency in seven languages for the three language major
What is your GPA? I applied 10/31 and was deferred 1/18 and accepted 3/1. Your SAT was better than mine (I was an 1170) but my GPA was a 3.66. I applied for Finance so it’s a pretty competitive major too. So my guess is we probably have the same stats and you should be alright.
