I have a spreadsheet with it all laid out as the different scenarios are coming in (colleges/merit awards/etc.). So we will look at the final total cost. We’ll also look at the fit with what he prioritizes…one of the priorities being him able to continue on the cello even though he won’t be a music major. And it looks like Rowan checks that box as well.
My S is finishing up his first semester at Rowan-Civil Engineering. We are from Rhode Island and I have to tell you this school has done nothing but impress me with their engineering program. Being from New England, we had many great options to choose from but the new facilities at Rowan and the small classroom sizes were a major factor in him making a decision to go there. Also, I know he will be able to finish in 4 years which is not a guarantee at some of the bigger programs. He lives in Holly Pointe within the Engineering Learning Community (ELC). FYI- He was guaranteed a spot in Holly Pointe as long as he joined the ELC. He has met many friends and study partners through the ELC. Getting involved at the school also helped. He is a member of the men’s lacrosse club which is pretty much his second family now. The engineering clinics that the students are required to take are an excellent tool for students to work with all specialties within their program. Also, this is definitely not a suitcase college. He is busy every weekend…maybe too busy lol.
Just got admitted as an Electrical and Computer Engineering Major
My son received his acceptance yesterday - Electrical Engineering. I have read that in years past, the merit scholarship award info is sent out in January. We are from PA and have not yet visited the school… once we see the $$ we will make an appointment to meet with the engineering department.
Congrats Kristy to you and your son! I recall them having accepted students’ days, I think in March, but maybe earlier. (Hard for me to remember, because I swear everytime I visited Rowan with the kids the weather was terrible!)
01kids03 - you are singing my song with regards to the spreadsheet! We did the same thing and it really helped make the info black and white. Then you can get into the fine points!
both of my kids are musically inclined. My foster son plays in the honors jazz band (run by students) and my daughter sings in an on campus choir.
I love the cello - if you ever have the opportunity, go see YoYoMa in concert. He is truly extraordinary!
My daughter was just accepted on Thursday to the writing arts program. We actually have not visited yet but are going to the open house tomorrow. Congrats to all who have been accepted - reading these posts have gotten me very excited.
@buckscountymom please post about what you think of the Writing Arts program! D21 will be applying to Rowan and that’s one of her areas of interest. S17 is in the education department so I’d be interested if you learn any details about the writing arts. Thanks!
Does anyone know on average how long it takes to get an acceptance letter or does it depend on the time of year?
@mj0673 can you please tell me a little more about the ELC? We are applying to Honors and I know they have some sort of living arrangements for them as well. How would it work if one belongs to both? Is the ELC by invite only? I really want my son to be part of a group that shares similar interests (engineering) Electrical/Computer is his intended major.
I got my acceptance a little over 3 weeks after I applied. Not sure how applying closer to the deadline will affect this
Okay thank you
So we asked my son about the schools he was accepted to, which ones he would go to. He is not close to a decision, but he has 7 acceptances so far. Rowan was not on the top of the list for him. So as much as I was impressed, I guess he was not. It’ll be an interesting few months before he decides…
@01kids03 My comment to this is not really related to Rowan, but is related to good financial choices.
We did not allow our kids to apply to colleges we could not afford to send them. There was no choosing a place that would leave them (and us too) tens of thousands of dollars in debt.
I don’t know anything about your $$ life, nor do I need to know. I’m just advising you put together a spreadsheet. Go to a place like collegedata and look at each colleges cost of attendance. Add in any costs, like flights, then subtract your scholarships from each. THEN decide the top choices. I assume you have a set amount of money you can contribute each year. Please consider the overall cost from a 30,000 foot view. Go over to the Financial Aid and Scholarships forum and read some of those threads - they are eye opening.
I work with a large number of mid 20 to mid 30 year olds - engineers, professionals making good salaries and absolutely saddled with monthly payments. It is very restrictive to carry even $20,000 of debt.
Best of luck!
@NJRoadie we have the spreadsheet and have had the conversation and he knows what we are comfortable with spending. He has other offers at the moment and as of right now, Rowan is not the most attractive $$$ wise. There were a couple of schools that we visited and he didn’t like so I get it. He didn’t apply to those schools, this was one of my recommendations and we visited after he applied. It’s still on the table, but he is not likely to attend.
