Do you remember what time his portal updated yesterday?
@momofrs2021 Yes, the summer session is a UP program with slightly lower admission requirements than a fall start. However, it is expensive, especially for out of state students. You may want to consider whether starting at a branch campus, with smaller classes, more interaction with professors, less competition among students, and significantly lower costs for out of state students, might be the better choice for a good but not stellar student.
I am not completely sure when it was updated but he checked around 8 pm Pacific.
Summer is at UP but if you put summer, it isn’t a automatic acceptance. Admissions will look at your application for UP, if they can’t admit you then they look at it again for summer, then they will look at it for the branch campus.
How does Summer option works ?
if you selected for Summer option and High School graduation still not completed, how does it work?
can you still continue with High School classes and attend Penn state?
I don’t believe summer at PSU starts until July 1 or so.
What’s the cost difference between summer and fall admission for OOS ?
@NJcollege2021 Tuition for 6 credits taken in summer session would be around $3600 instate, $6000 out of state (more if 7-8 credits are taken). Room and board would be additional (at least $2500). Starting in the summer would also mean loss of at least some summer job earnings potential.
They tell students that no one will get a second decision until everyone in that group (in this case EA) has gotten their first decision. That being said, that has not always been the case and many times the turnaround is still within the current cycle window - which is by Dec 24th.
Also, forgot to mention - you cannot get into Smeal business from any major other than Smeal pre major (what people think of as a direct admit - but it’s not really) or Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS). Penn State doesnt have a school of Arts and Sciences. Theirs would be called LIberal Arts. That’s a big difference because in order to apply for Smeal at the end of sophomore year, you’d have to be in DUS AND complete all of the entry to major requirements with the required GPA.
Summer at PSU cost us, in state, about $8000 in 2015 for our daughter. They take 6 credits at no discount, plus room and board for the summer. I will say, it was the very best thing my daughter did. She loved summer and I’ve never heard of anyone who says differently. But it is costly.
Putting summer option on your application is just that - an option. Not a guarantee.
You will first be reviewed for fall, and if they can’t offer you fall, they evaluate you for summer (if you checked yes to summer evaluation). If they can’t offer you summer, they usually then offer you a 2+2 at a commonwealth campus. Summer admit requirements are only slightly less competitive. In fact, the middle 50% that Penn State publicizes is their middle 50% for students starting fall AND summer. So if your GPA is below that - then it’s below it for summer as well.
So if my DD wanted to change from Biology to Business she couldn’t after she was admitted (hypothetically assuming she is) and started?
I get you need a certain GPA and prerequisites but kids switch majors all the time (I mean a lot of college age kids do).
She’d have to switch to DUS (undecided) and take the entry to major requirements from there. From Biology, she wouldn’t’ be able to get the classes she needs to complete the entry to major requirements for Smeal business. Those classes are restricted to DUS or Smeal pre major.
Ok thank you for clarifying!
Thank you! Yes, sorry, I had a million things going at once and was confusing a different school’s program ( arts and sciences) for LA name thank you for the info!!
Yes it’s now under DSU consideration (pre-major) according to portal. Thank you!! It also still says EA so hope I’ll hear before the 24th!
I can answer your questions about the Berks campus. It is a good/safe campus. They have their own website where you can see if your major is offered as a 4-year degree or a 2+2 degree. Many Berks County students attend as commuters, but they do have dorms available. It is located on its own separate campus from the town; very rural in feel. Wyomissing, where it is located, is probably one of the safest and best communities in Berks County. Many highly qualified students (that did not want large UP, but have scores to earn admission there) attend Berks. It is a great choice to begin your PSU adventure!
Regarding summer – we point this out every year, but if you are accepted for summer, don’t be thinking that later on you can just ask to be moved to fall because you want to go on vacation, or you only have a week after you graduate from HS, or you need a summer job. You can’t do that. So pleassseeeeee don’t ask for summer unless you intend to show up. If you haven’t graduated from high school prior to the start of summer session, you aren’t eligible.
This is great to hear. Thank you!
