Good to know about the Japanese professors, thank you!
I am wondering if anyone has applied EA and not heard if they have been accepted or not. Should we have received some form of notification by now? This is all new to me and I am not sure if all the EA results are released at once or if there will be more coming.
Did you check email and the portal? My son got his acceptance by email/portal on Dec 22nd I think, but just got the mailed acceptance 2 or 3 days ago while others got theirs the same days as the portal results, which Iām assuming means they released them in batches.
Yes, on the Admission Portal we clicked on view your letters and this is what came up āThere is no update to your application status to reportā. Is this response bad news?
My daughter didnāt specifically apply EA. She just applied. But got all her applications in at the same time in Late October for every school so automatically got into the EA queue at UPS.
Maybe you missed a deadline for EA?
I would just put in an email to the admissions office and ask them for a status update.
I plan to email them this week. It would be very convenient if my daughter gets in at UPS. We live 13 miles from campus and I have lived in Tacoma all my life.
The deadline for EA notification is Jan 15. So donāt be alarmed if you havenāt heard. If you do reach out, it should be the child reaching out to their admissions counselor- that is the person that decides on their application so the more contact/relationship they build the better just because they now know them and it shows they are interested in UPS very much. There is also a chance they will get deferred until RD - that happened to my son. Let me know if that does and I will tell you what we did (he got in)
Hello, We also hope to be able to visit in person. Tough otherwise to decide between UPS, WWU, CU Boulder, and Lawrence University. (Last one scores high with parents but not with our daughter since it is too close to home.) She is seeking a campus with strong sciences, solid academics (but not a pressure cooker) and open-minded friendly students (she is quirky, shy and would be turned off by the whole Greek sorority scene.) Diversity and proximity to downhill skiing big pluses (she loves skiing and is on her high school team but not sure sheād be competitive at the college level.) Since we are not from the west/NW and have been unable to visit we would welcome any insights from those of you more familiar with the places on her list. Thank you!
Easy to narrow down your choices - do you want to do a state school or a small liberal arts school? Either choice will eliminate half. As someone who went to a state school and now has a child at a small liberal arts school, I am pro liberal arts school. You have relationships with your professors and your advisor, finish your degree in 4 years. If your child wants the party scene they should choose the state schools, while there is fun to be had at UPS, it is not the place for big parties. Funny you should say Lawrence and UPS, my oldest is at UPS and my high school senior I think will go to Lawrence (we are on the east coast and west coast is too far for him). I think UPS and Lawrence are quite similar, so if you like Lawrence other than location, will probably like Puget Sound. However, I wouldnāt consider having my child go to a school we hadnāt set foot on, so if you can figure out a way to get out to Puget Sound, even if they arenāt allowing small tours the students are back on campus. I can probably find you a tour guide too from our parent Facebook group
We visited both UPS and WWW with my daughter. Not any of the others on your list. My take is that UPS is kind of a hidden gem and I expect is trending upwards. The campus is beautiful and well-kept. It is in an old upscale residential neighborhood with a couple of up-and-coming urban districts nearby with restaurants and cafes and such. We didnāt meet any students because the campus was closed, but she has sit in on a lot of virtual tours and sessions and has a good feel about the place. My daughter sounds similar to yours except that she is into swimming not skiing. The nearest ski area would be Crystal Mountain on the slopes of Mt. Rainier, which is maybe 1.5 hours away.
WWU is a typical directional state school. Itās not a flagship so doesnāt have the high-powered research programs. Their long-term mission was to be a teacherās college and there is still a big education emphasis, but has expanded. It has the usual state-school frustrations with big classes, scheduling difficulties, bureaucracy, and such. It is also a beautiful campus in a beautiful town. For us it would be ultra-cheap because we are in-state. Which would be the main appeal. If the out-of-state costs are similar to UPS then I think it is a no-brainer. Go to UPS.
Thank you Sally for your reply, and sorry it took so long to acknowledge it. Busy month. We definitely hope to tour UPS and have not been there yet. Even if it is not an official tour, I feel that important. Iām secretly hoping it will sway my daughter away from CU Boulder, her top pick. (Not because of parties or sororities, last thing on her mind. She loves Colorado and skiing, which, in my opinion, is not reason enough to choose a college, and the bigger size.) Nothing against CU Boulder, Iām sure it is a fine school (we will visit there too) but I want my daughter to have the attention and mentoring she would get at a smaller private college. (She is very shy so I think the attention is actually a negative for her.) Another thing really impressing me about Lawrence is the attention they have already been giving my daughter as a prospective. Remarkable, actually. None of the other schools, including UPS, have come close to it! But, unfortunately, that may not be a positive for my daughter!
Thanks so much for your insights!!! Good to hear your positive remarks about UPS. We are determined to make our way out there this Spring, even if it is to simply walk around the campus on our own. Very hard for this yearās class to make these decisions and I think it also is hard for them to get into the mode of colleges after being virtual for so long. Ah well. Tough for everybody and at least our kids have something exciting to look forward to when this strange pandemic time is finally done.
Weāve decided to hit four Pacific NW schools over spring break. Crossing my fingers weāll get at least a taste of what each campus is like. Looking forward to hearing your impressions!
My younger son has been accepted at Lawrence. I agree their admitted students game is on point - lots of emails and contacts, LUX and the box was as good as you can do for virtual students day. I would just caution against deciding based on that. Our best acceptance package was from McDaniel for both kids, although probably one of lowest level colleges they were accepted to. Think of it as is the wedding or the marriage more important. UPS has a very nuturing culture, from what I can tell Lawrence has the same. Definitely visit, sometimes you walk on a campus and have the this is the place feeling, or you have a feeling you donāt fit. Of course as far as skiing there is great skiing in WA, she could ski every weekend if she wanted
UPS is now starting in-person tours for admitted students. You have to register in advance. We are 2 hours away so Iāll probably drive up with my daughter at some point. She wants to get all of her RD decisions first. Still waiting for UW, Whitman, and Occidental, before we go back and do an in-person at UPS.
Hi, Did I ever reply to your email? Iām confused by this new format on CC. Mostly just want to thank you. My daughter decided not to apply to WWU and we are looking forward to spending some time in Tacoma and walking around the UPS campus next month. Hopefully visiting these schools in person will really help her figure out where she would be happiest.
Good luck to your daughter with her decision!!
Iāve lost track of the threads here. My daughter doesnāt want to do any more visits or thinking about college until she hears back from all her regular decision schools which include UW, Whitman, and Occidental. Then she will let me know which finalists she wants to visit again this spring.
I honestly think she is leaning towards UW but they donāt announce until March. WWU keeps sending her stuff weekly. They are very aggressive. But I think UW is her top public school choice and Whitman is probably her top private school choice. We shall see. She has all her own pipelines into these schools and connections with friends ahead of her of which I am largely unaware. I think she sees me as more meddlesome than helpful! So it goes.
Hi Camasite, Not sure I ever responded to your last email? Iām losing track of the threads too. Just wanted to say as someone who lives in Madison and has had several families attend over generations it is a terrific school! And Madison is a neat college town. Good luck to your daughter as she decides!
Wrong UW! We are talking about the University of Washington which is just up the road from us here in Camas, WA. Daughter wants to be a Husky. Badgers are not on her radar.
Hey everyone. Just wanted to let you know the spots for on-campus tours over spring break are going fast. Hope this helps!
