University of Puget Sound?

Does anyone have any insight or experience with the University of Puget Sound? My daughter is still rounding out her final list and has taken an interest in UPS, so any information would be welcomed. This is one school that I have not looked at closely but, on paper, looks very nice. We will be visiting in mid-October.

This one was on the long list for my son but he never pursued it further. Never got to visit. It did look good on paper. He really had a one track, one school mind all last year. I didn't realize it until the dust had settled in May.

Carolyn,
Daughter and I were at a 4 school info session to hear about a school from the south (..nothing further north than DC!). The Puget Sound rep almost had my daughter scheduling a visit. Innovative programs, flexibile administration. But the weather had the final say:(

I'm also interested in UPS (ha :p). On paper looks great, fantastic, and I love the location/weather! I guess I'm just weird like that. Anyways any information would be greatly appreciated

My son and I visited the school this summer. Although school was not in session, we had a very good student tour guide. My son also had a very long conversation with a student in his area of interest. The admissions counselor was very informative. There was a lot of construction when we were there -- they are adding on a huge addition to the science building. Unfortunately, the weather was not very good. Although we were told you can see Mt. Rainer from campus, we never saw any mountains. Overall both of us were very impressed with the campus and the programs. However, the weather was not a selling point.

Yes, this info session was in the DC area. Admission rep said they get the same amount of yearly rainfall, just more evenly distributed, as a constant fine mist. Not the rain that gets you, it is the grey!

Carolyn,
We visited and my H and I loved it. Beautiful campus, the reps and professors are amazing, very personalized. My D did not relate as well to the students, felt they were not animated but all seemed earthy and laid back, not energetic. I think that sounds unrealistic but she felt it attracted a certain type. My son'f classmate attends however and loves it. We also met a male student who tranferred sophomore year to USD from Puget Sound. His mother told me she was very upset as the school was very nurturing and personalized . He wanted to be in CA and did not like the rain. I would have been happy if my D liked it. It is a school that has a lot to offer. I loved the campus maybe even more then Lewis and Clark which is quite pretty as well. There are theme houses bordering the campus, actually seem part of it they are so close. Worth checking out.The rainfall unfortunatly all occurs during the school year and the smaller amounts are in the summer, but it did not seem like your D cared that much about the rain. A sun lamp might be helpful though.

We visited UPS and it was actually one of MY top choices for him. I thought the campus was beautiful, and all the students seemed so refreshing. I liked the size, and thought everyone seemed so warm and welcoming.

Unfortunately, our son decided it wasn't an option for him. He knew that he wanted to go into some form of engineering, and didn't like the idea of a 3-2 program requiring him to transfer to a different school before he graduated. Academically, I knew this wasn't the best place for him, but I fell in love with it!!!

One of my collegues & her hubby graduated from UPS. Her older daughter is loving it there--she's a freshman. Her younger daughter is interested in applying there as well. A friend's son is also enjoying it there; he's a senior & got a merit scholarship (not full, but something). Her younger son is also thinking of it & is impressed with it. The dreary grey & drizzle of the NW can get to you if you are a sunshine person, but I've heard great things about the school. Personally, I even found Eugene (UO) tough to take when the drought finally ended in my senior year (loved those drought years though).

Weather & skies are a consideration for students. That's one reason I went a bit south to UCDavis for law school. It was sunnier than Eugene. <grin></grin>

Coming from the NW, the weather doesn't bother us at all. Son (only a rising Sophomore) is considering UPS. It's a somewhat larger LAC and one of the few that offers a business degree. It was D's 2nd/3rd choice and her BF goes there. He loves it. The student's are quite laid back and friendly. Merit scholarships are definately available. I'd guess that boys would have greater chance than girls due to the m/f ratio.

Puget Sound is quite generous with merit money and have a unique method of computing STATs which works to the student's advantage. They take the highest math and verbal on an ACT and convert it to SAT so for example if you had 31 subtest it would be converted to a 680. They will take subtests from multiple testing dates and combine them . They are fairly generous with finaid as well.

Thanks everyone. My daughter doesn't mind the rain at all -- especially since all of the other schools on her list are in places where it's colder and snowy most of the year! We'll be visiting and daughter will do an overnight in mid-October and I'll let you know what she/we think.

It is so strange to be looking at schools again. A few weeks ago, I thought she had a firm ED choice. Now, it feels like we're back in the supermarket shopping for a whole new set of groceries. :)

Carolyn, what happened?! You don't have to share if it is too personal, typical teenage stuff, cold feet, new boyfriend, normal growth and change?

Carolyn--I'll be interested in your opinion of UPS. I thought for awhile that my oldest might be going there or to Pacific Lutheran. Both schools looked good to us when we were looking at them six years ago. However, S chose a different path. Both of those schools may appear on my D's list again, though. Ugh, she is completely clueless as to what she is looking for in a college. I don't feel like going through this again.

Cangel,
Her surgery and recuperation really threw her for a loop and she seems to be reconsidering many things about herself and her future these days. She's having some doubts about the art program at her first choice school (it's heavily geared to types of art that she is not interested in), the very small size of the school (under 1200 students), and the distance from home. Not to mention the fact that she's never been great at committing to big decisions to begin with.

So, I think it is probably best that we give her time to kind of work this out in her mind. Luckily, her top choice school has both an ED and an EA option, so she has some time and flexibility. To be honest, though, it's a little disappointing for her Dad and I, as we had already made an emotional investment in that school because we knew she had a solid shot applying ED. But, hey, we'll live with where ever she ends up as long as she's happy. :)

I know she had a tough surgery, and I'd bet she still isn't feeling entirely herself. Time, space, love and support - she's been through a lot. Best wishes to all of you!

Sounds like she would get in RD as well especially as they have met her. It can be difficult for girls that are close to their families. My D is still flucuating in her feelings and calls us a lot, sometimes she loves her school and other times she sounds homesick. She had great teachers in HS and is now taking a lot of Gen Ed classes which can be somewhat boring so she is not used to classes that aren't always stimulating. It is good that your D is taking her time. She will make a wise choice Carolyn.

Hi Carolyn. Re UPS, a relative in Portland has quite a few friends whose kids have attended UPS and liked it. A family friend's son went there, did well, and is now a dr. I only know one student who is going there, for the business program. He was a very successful student at our high school, and his parents research colleges with their kids very thoroughly (as you do!). Tacoma isn't the greatest city though...but Seattle is nearby.

When you visit UPS, be sure to go to see the footbridge over the highway in Tacoma with an installation of Dale Chihuly glass sculptures incorporated into the structure. It's one of my favorite pieces of art ever--glass flowers all across one side and glass sea creatures all overhead. Don't miss it!

We are visiting UPS on Saturday with our senior D. We plan a tour/interview/information session. I can post a review to this thread.

wendya--please do!
