Finally get confirmation S is in at Lawrence. We were surprised that he got a huge merit scholarship and a small talent scholarship — I would have figured it to be the other way around, but we’ll take it!

I can’t speak to your S’s situation in particular. But I have seen and my D experienced the same thing. Sometimes even in reverse at schools. Bottom line in some situations they are just trying to get you a good “final number”. So if you have good grades they can pull it from merit. If your grades are bit lower, the artistic side could be higher.
Again, I don’t know his situation for sure. But I do remember being concerned with the lower talent $$$ at my D’s school compared to merit. Did that mean she wasn’t that talent? It did not. A few years later, the music school took all awards inside and made it one amount…maybe to stop all the concerns?!?

Agree! We had a snafu with a school - D was accepted EA with a nice merit award and then around RD time when music scholarships came out they basically changed the name from academic to talent, which we interpreted as additional $$, though I now know they were just trying to change the funding source. Much confusion and stress ensued, which I’m not sure my kid even now understands. She was definitely swayed by schools that called their awards talent vs academics, thinking that it might mean more performance opportunity, whereas I am now quite convinced that several schools were just trying to get to a net price close to our in-state flagship.

Two years ago, DD got the Vandy/Blair decision on a Friday (3/19/2020). It should be any day now…
