The dual degree was almost a deal breaker for my kid, but he ultimately decided there was enough other stuff he liked about Bard that he’d apply…and grudgingly admitted that the dual degree might not be a terrible idea. He’s interested in a lot of things, but he’s not the kind of kid who’s going to major in clarinet performance and chemistry or whatever and wind up at medical school. Maybe art history? I guess he’ll figure that out if he actually gets in and then goes there, which is a lot of ifs in the way yet!
Same here. Son was more focused on possibly doing a double major or minoring in something in liberal arts when he was applying, but now is more focused on music. He’ll figure it out if it’s an option for him. Good luck to your son as well
Did they give a time? My daughter didn’t say anything to me about the email.
No time was given
Does anyone know when Jacobs sends out studio assignments and merit offers?
No studio assignment or merit info yet here, although my child knows the studio from the professor directly. Only studio assignment at SMTD, no merit info there either. The only place we know both is Eastman.
With regard to studio assignments, after acceptance it is generally OK to contact a professor directly and ask about availability of studio space, and if they might consider adding you the to their roster of students. You can also take additional sample lessons as part of the decision process. Some schools will ask you to rank your top three (or top N) studio preferences in an attempt to match teachers with students. Knowing whether you like the studio is critical to deciding to commit to a program.
Our son, performance major, came off the “very short waitlist” at Eastman in 2017, and if I recall it was well before the decision deadline, maybe even very early April? He graduated last spring. Feels like forever ago now that he’s on to MM!
Songbirdmama, have done all those things re: studio placement, but wondering when they let us know for sure. It seems like studio placement and grants are 2 big factors for the decision making process, and we have neither yet
Hi, are all students who applied to Blair will be notified earlier than other students inside Vanderbilt or is it just a small number of people?
Jacobs usually sends merit/talent $$$ late…up to March 31, maybe. It may have changed and may be different per instrument, but in the past, they have tended to be on the late side.
As @songbirdmama says, they do not do studio assignments. That is left to the student (or a teacher may reach out). It is an aspect of Jacobs that is not always “popular”. Be aware that getting the studio assignment at Jacobs can be a bit of work and require patience as teachers are often trying to figure out what UG students are staying for grad school so studio size is very fluid (grad decisions I believe are 4/15 so be aware of that). I know students who entered with no teacher assigned and had one at the end of the first week (required) and were happy and successful.
Good luck!!
Edit: after seeing your other message…a studio “understanding” is typcially between the student and teacher. I do not recall (it’s a been a long time) any communication from the school about it. However the teacher seems to communicate it at some point to the administration. You can contact the head of the dept for the instrument and ask for assistance or at least a time frame. I have suggested this to others; and they had success in at least getting some understanding of the situation.
I know of multiple other people that haven’t heard from Blair, so they might be releasing by department.
Agree with @bridgenail Confirmation was always verbal or by email to teacher. Didn’t officially show up until course registration time.
My son hasn’t heard from Blair yet. I’m treating this as a bad sign, but I really have no idea whether everyone who’s accepted, from all departments, is notified in advance of regular decisions coming out or not. I’m not a fan of the slow roll out thing, though; it feels like a big mind game.
I know many who haven’t heard yet. We somehow were notified early (she’s vocal performance/soprano). Hers said “Congratulations! We are thrilled to notify you early of your admission to the Blair School of Music for fall 2022. While you will receive your official admit packet in late March, we invite you to take the extra time to explore Blair and Vanderbilt and to connect with faculty and current students”
Not sure why the “early” notification ?
When the Bard decisions come out, if anyone who has been accepted has any questions, DM me. My kid is in the fifth year of the double degree program, and I’m more than happy to help!
Agreed. The slow roll out is torture. Maybe it is by department, but we literally have no idea. They have to know we talk to each other!
It seems like it’s vocal, piano, and violin that I’ve heard of so far…
I’m also assuming it is a rejection, but I wish they would just wrap it up. This is all a roller coaster ride that I can’t wait to get off of!
That’s encouraging to hear! Thank you for sharing! (I called and they said he’s the only one on this waitlist, but I do know they over-admit. So this is helpful in deciding if we should go visit or not).
Nice! I may message you if that’s ok.
Haven’t seen anything from Bard for my D who’s a VP Undergrad candidate. Anyone hear back from them yet?
